It's a decent game, but yep, still in that state of a couple years ago.
2050 was allegedly bringing in new content, which has never really happened, but was "successful" (if it's a success...) in splitting the already small playerbase in two.
For a newcomer it still offers some fun by a play-through, even moreso if liked the show.
I liked the show and I liked Defiance. Tried 2050 and discovered real quick it was just the same game with little bit of graphical improvements and an overhaul of the skills.
With an event that lasts a week and only have to kill 15K total shows how dead the game is.

Here's a snippet of just how dead Defiance 2050 is - deader than original Defiance (also dead)
Must give credit to Gamigo for growing both of these titles /snicker
I find it hilarious to see that the original Defiance is actually getting more players than 2050

I used to raise voice against the use of steamcharts (don't like Gabe and his bloatware ), especially in the case of MMORPGs with their own launchers and account management systems - but that ratio could be accurate.
I've messed around in both during the event, and Defiance really felt more crowded.
But as Kano said it's kinda expected, 2050 was more for the "new players", there wasn't much incentive for veterans to switch, and start over from scratch in a weaker/dumber, but way more grindy game.
For someone new, with only the story interest, 2050 is the preferable pick (all the content is available), but if you already have the DLCs purchased in Defiance, and you prefer the open character building over the plain and boring class system of 2050, there's simply no reason to switch over.
