Part of me does applaud it, because it's more than most of the crowdfunded developers do.
Another part of me realizes it's just an extended ad meant to sell more ships. I have a pretty cynical eye when it comes to gaming development these days.

You don't HAVE TO pledge for more than your 45$ starter package. Ships are achievable with in game credits.

Oh it’s absolutely a sales tool, but hey... it’s a try before your buy setup and that’s extraordinarily rare in today’s world.

Yes JoeBlober, we know. And those who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on ships will have no advantage over those who earn those ships in-game. And even the best of those ships will be able to be earned in a reasonable amount of time. And those who spent all that cash will be perfectly fine with that. Sounds totally plausible.

Same way as you don't have to pay anything for F2P game. That doesn't mean there wouldn't be people who wish the game would just have a higher access fee and no microtransactions.
EDIT: Sometimes the unexplained LOL -reactions by Gdemami feel really tiring. It's like we have an insult -automat on these forums.

People who want to play Star Citizen at some point before they die should feel free to mortgage their homes and invest money without becoming shareholders. This is the wave of the Kickstarter/DreamsRus/Charity4GameDevelopers Future.

Same advantage than any MMO, with new comers having basics assets while those who came a few weeks, months or years before will have way more options.
The plus of SC is that even those with no times but cash can particpate to the game economy (IRL and in game) while others with a lot of time but little cash can also enjoy SC spending in game credits... and crewing bigger ships they can't afford to get yet.
A guy able to pledge for an Idris won't be able to be competitive alone. The game is the journey in coop or solo, not to have the biggest stuff.

Stop defending this pay to win crap...if you paint a wall with blue paint don't try to convince people it is yellow. It is f'ing BLUE, we all know it is blue. The more you say it is yellow the more stupid it makes you look. Is there not pvp in this game? Can a whale buy the best ships available day one? Ships that will take months or more for a casual player to afford? Is there not currency in the game? So Mr. I bought a ship for $2500 gets to earn currency from day one while peasant guy has to save up money forever to afford the same ship, by then where is whale guy?
Defending this game is silly. It is what it is. I would not even care any more if there weren't people like you still trying to justify it.
I tried out a free weekend over 2 years ago with alpha 3.1 and wasn't willing to spend time with a game in that state. I have a better PC now and figured I'd see what's changed in 2 years, but the only thing I was able to load successfully was checking out 2 empty Hangars and flying around singleplayer in some free fly Arena Commander map.
There's no option to join the persistent universe and it seems to hang up if I try to join multiplayer matches, which I don't really want to do anyway because when I think "what I want Star Citizen to be" I definitely don't think "a collection of deathmatches and dogfights".

Maybe stop being so agressive about a game you don't know nothing about. This is not WoW or other lvl based and vertical grind gear focused mmorpg.
This is a Universe Simulator and ship gameplay is just a part of it. Having a more expensive ship doesn't necessarily mean an advantage. Specially in a game you spend as much time outside the ship as you spend inside and you can steal other players ships and avoid combat all toguether if you play smart.
Attacking this game is silly and premature when you know nothing about it now much less how it will be in the future. But hey jaded mmorpger's and their broken hearts allways gotta unleash their rage at something.
Instead of blindly attacking something you know nothing about maybe try some research first:

It's already the reality of the Alpha servers, the biggest/most expensive ships need a big crew to be fully effective and even then a small ship can run circles around it.
The thing to remember is that there is no actual game, there is only an alpha build of a potential game. You cannot buy the actual game now.
So whatever features you like, or don't like, may or may not be in the actual game, if there is one released. Anything is subject to change at any time.
An easy analogy is buying a new car. When you donate money, you are donating to building a car factory. You can test drive a prototype now, but it may or may not look or feel like the final product. If there is a final product. It is not guaranteed that any cars will actually be built at all.
Is this a scam? Not if you understand that this isn't a test drive to see if you want to buy it or not. You are donating to help build a potential game, not buying anything.

I've got a better computer now so I might give it another try & it sounds more refined.
I'll have to look-up how much hard-drive space it takes up, anyone know by chance?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe I'll try again in a few days.
This I did not know. So I could spend hundreds of dollars on a ship, and it be stolen"?
No way I play this ... Universe cash shop simulator or whatever it claims it is.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

It can create duplicate for a time, but after that the original ship isn't considered anyone's property and will eventually despawn.
I believe that you believe this.
