Crowfall has hit a new milestone and is officially begins Alpha testing, which brings it just one step closer to Beta, and eventually the official release.
Predicting a very fast "Alpha" and the opening of Beta this summer. Beta will run fast and launch (no more wipes no matter what they call it) will happen by end of year.
So sayeth the Harbinger.

What happened to the soft launch and all that jazz from a year or two ago, and how is that different to alpha? Or is this a necro from years ago? I am confused.

The soft launch is still the plan. This is just one step closer to getting there, though honestly, they could have called it alpha a couple years ago. The game is mostly feature complete. The next 6 months should be adding the last remaining odds and ends, and balancing, polishing and bug fixing.

How is the actual group pvp combat? I saw some videos from a year or so ago and it looked pretty laggy.

Out of all the crowdfunded MMORPGs this one is still so much further along then the rest, its not even funny. That is including all the delays. Going to side with Slap here.

How does soft launch for an MMO differ from just a launch? Don't all of hem release with "features to come later?"
Isn't a soft launch just a regular launch for an MMO with an implicit "please take it easy on us with your reviews" tacked on?
I mean even a AAA release like ESO launched without raids or a high level zone that they said would come later, and did with the release of Craglorn several months later. Don't all MMOs launch like that?

As I recall, they were going to soft launch with little fanfare, observe how the first influx of backers and interested players interacted with the game, rebalance as necessary, fix any bugs etc. (No more wipes after this point)
Then they were going to invest a bunch o' money in a big marketing campaign for the hard launch? Formal release? I dunno, hard to keep up with all of these new BS terms used these days.

When they stop wiping and turn on the VIP sub it’s launched. No after what adjective they put in front of it.

The naiveté some people sometimes have at unreleased games shocks me.
I mean, we've been here before haven't we? Waiting along the sidelines, as games perish even before releasing, building up hype and spreading word on their game way too soon.
We are patiently waiting for an MMO to do well. Since we so desperately need it, I do atleast. And somehow I know, I know it's going to have a hard time when it releases.
How can you say 'Glad to see them making progress' with all the knowledge and experience we have. Gobsmacked, with all the things I've seen from both this company and reviews from people, this game is an empty experience right now. It's missing the MMO magic people want.
Who remembers Wild West Online for that matter? And the people who defended that pile of garbage.
I make no comment about the condition or reception of the game. I have simply harnessed the Harbinger powers invested in me to predict that Beta will be this summer and release by the end of the year.

Sometimes, I look up high
And then I think there might
Just be a better life
Away from all we know
That´s where I want to go
Out on the wild side
And I wish I was (oh, oh, oh, oh)

1. The signal for beta will be when we begin inviting non-backers to participate in the playtesting.
So it seems like their Alpha is really what I would consider Beta and then their Beta will be open to all (formerly known as Open Beta). Given that, I think I have to move my timeline up even more. I think there is a strong possibility that we see launch in the Fall.
So ready or not... Crowfall is actually going to launch pretty soon. No more 18 months for this one.

I love when people say this, because it so completely defies logic.
Milking people would require that they are taking in more money than they are spending. News flash: they aren't.
