Are any of you guys still playing EQ2? If so, what's your opinion of the state of the game? Still going strong, or about to be put on life support or even cancelled? From what I've read in Discord and on the forums, it sounds like the number of concurrent players on the most populated server is most likely in the hundreds.

Wouldn't say it is completely dead or going to be cancelled, but it also probably isn't going to be too fun until end game if you want to do a bunch of group content prior to end game. I've done /who all throughout the day after I saw your post and it always hit the 100 cap. Most of the zones I've been in aside from cities /who brought up 2-20. More single digits than not. That's with various characters from lvl 10-70.
You will not be able to do a lot of content you want to do in EQ2 and most of the content that is doable solo will be done as blue/green.
Then because vet players accumulated a LOT of currency the auction house prices are out of this world INSANE.You will not be able to afford the prices climbing as a new player.Like simple low level books are PLATS and of course the game is designed around MASTER books which have insane prices.
There is a reason i played FFXI,b4 end game gear doesn't really matter,a decent weapon sure but that is all.In EQ2/Wow your gear matters a lot and in EQ2 the quality of your spells matters a LOT.I never liked the idea of TIERS because the game is designed for the best TIER of spell "Master" and gear meaning anything less and your struggling.Your only recourse would be to spend a ton of real money to get properly tiered to do tougher content but still only doing the greens.OR hope to get lucky on drops.
Awhile back when still SOE they added the crafting trainers, they sort of half assed it but for the most part was a good idea. The problem was that i am sure Smedley was thinking $$$ because the crafting trainers take TOO LONG to get your gear. You can speed it up "instant results" via real money....sigh.
Long winded point, you will not enjoy EQ2 without a static group. The game is so big now and i am not even sure i could remember the path course needed to get the gear in proper progression. The one positive is of course "if subbed"you can turn the xp off to play around anywhere you want without worries of diminishing your content.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
