I think my biggest fear for this game (outside of if it'll ever release) is whether a new player will actually be able to get into it or not. All I ever read is ever more features being added to the game. Is it actually going to be accessible to the average gamer?
For example, Elite: Dangerous seems to have about half of the features - or less - than SC and yet it's a nightmare to get into it. There's a few tutorials, which you will never remember 100% of, and then thats it, dumped in the galaxy. If you try to do the obvious things (combat, exploring) chances are you'll be dead very quickly.
I've put 100hours + into ED and still don't understand half the shit in the game.
Main difference between ED and Star Citizen is that you're an actual avatar just like many other mmorpgs so it's easier to relate. You spawn in a city Hub of some planet along, buy cloths, food, gear, socialize AND you can then fly ships or drive vehicles.
Since there are no levels and you can walk around everywhere that means that as a new player you can experience the same as any other player. You can go aboard a big ship along more experienced players and man a turret and fight hordes from day one. It can be a very social experience or completely antisocial depending on how you play it.
This PUBG streamer did a good video explaining his experience as a newbie.
And so did this NMS player that started playing Star Citizen.
Amazing people still are so blind to donate money and buy ships that will never fly anywhere.
I wont pay 1 cent

"A [as in one] system?" Weren't there supposed to be multiple star systems? If it's taken them this long to produce one, what's the ETA on the remainder? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I genuinely would like to know what backers think about this.
They produce the software to mass produce content (systems, planets, stations, surface, caves, NPCs etc.). Then it does not really matter if it is 1, 100 or 1000 systems.
But you already knew that. You just wanted to flame a bit.

The new player will most likely be at least 5 years behind the donators and maybe more by the time it releases.
Which is not true as I see new players doing fine, especially if they use the mentor feature and have an experienced volunteer guiding them through their first steps.
You find the button for that on the log in screen.

No, didn't know that. I know very little about the technical side of gaming. Mass produced content does sound soulless and awful, though.

Your paranoia about your little baby is showing.
It's also an unproven concept at this point, which he well knows.
Believe it when you see the hundreds of planets get generated and are actually playable and unique in ways that matter.

wooo hold on why are they asking us to pay to play a beta with that kind of money.wtf
Probably the same reason EA, Activision-Blizzard, NCSoft and - well most companies - don't allow people to "play" their developments. It costs money and involves effort. Not that most people want to play a pre-release game.
That they allow backers to play the "alpha" is because its crowdfunded and pretty much expected. Although having some players - "testers" - must be useful at this stage.
Fear not though! They have held multiple free events when anyone can play what is there. They have just had a week+ event for example.
Whatever other criticisms you might have not letting people try it is not a very good one to go on about.
And it does mean that people can make up their own minds. The events cut through the hype and crap. Whether people who give it a go like what they see - another matter.
So if you really want to try it you - almost certainly - will be able to at no cost.

A combination of falls information from the shills, payed adds, payed streamers and (payed?) news articles like this are responsible that new backers are tricked into supporting this "game".
At this point I am just enjoying following the soap opera of Star Citizen. And the most amusing part of it all to me is that if they ever actually release the game, they have already sold so many things in the cash shop (that don't exist yet) that it is going to be absolutely impossible to balance it all for multiplayer.
This is why I haven't put any money down. When you have people dumping thousands of thousands of dollars into space ships etc how is this not going to be the most pay to win game ever made?
Every time I see them bragging about the funding I think to myself oh joy the total from selling in game advantages is going up and this is the most Pay to win game that has yet to even release.
I could be completely wrong and it remains to be seen what will happen at launch but I'm betting if you got the starter pack and someone else spent 20k they might have a huge advantage. That they paid for. That let's them win against you.
In fact I would probably wait until at least a month after launch and multiple economy/pay to win videos before I decide.
You will have to forgive me if I don't take Chris Roberts at his word that it will not be pay to win because every game ever that went pay-to-everything-cash-shop-bonanza said they wouldn't go pay to win.

This game reminds me of the movie, 'The Producers'. I guess the ship selling is 'Springtime for Hitler'.
At this point, raising more money is just more embarrassing. All that money, all that time, and still no product. The longer this goes on, and the more money they raise, it's just a bigger failure to produce.

You seem confused, they are not raising money. They have a product (a game being developed) and are given money to support it. It's only natural that as their game gets more playable they will attract more money.
It's why they have been breaking funding and playerfor for the past 3 years

An alpha is not a product. It is a exercise for technical merit, period.
I can't buy the game and have copy, so technically it is not a product.
One thing i learned a LONG time ago,if a game developer is constantly talking about money and numbers, the game itself is not worth talking about.
I have seen this trend for like over 20 years now.I can only assume that some really unintelligent people behind the marketing THINK<<keyword, think that flaunting giant numbers around will ENTICE people to join in.<br />
I guess in a way it must work, ever notice how a lot of Asian games like to use giant damage numbers in combat ,like 30,000 damage flashing on the screen 4/5/6/7x.Or even NA games using giant numbers on gear +1500 Attack,+1200 Armor etc etc.
We used to see this all across the planet, even Asian games and f2p games...50 million accounts,20 millions players. Then we even had to witness what seemed to happen all at the same time, games wanted to break down the metrics, how many quests players have done,How many pvp fights, how many world firsts yada yada.
You know what entices me to play a game, when i see something about THE GAME that looks cool or unique.I couldn't care less about ANY numbers,i don't care about how many servers, how many players, how much money,ONLY the game matters.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

There is a great book in Computer Science called The Mythical Man Month. It describes in painful detail how adding more people and money to a project doesn't always make it come out any faster, or at all.
Given the time frame of development, and the money invested, it appears that adding more money and time isn't going to help make SC a product.
As of today, there is no product; you cannot buy the game. There is no game. The longer this continues, the bigger the failure in my opinion. If they hit $400 million in funding, it will be just that much bigger of a failure.

It is definitely a product. That's why it's charged with VAT and is covered by an international 14 days no questions asked refund policy.
Every experience you put a price barrier to get into can be considered a product, you don't need to own a physical copy of it.
You don't own digital games, you get access to them. In this case the main product is getting access to the playable alpha build and everything surrounding it.

Games take time, the bigger the game the more time it will take, it's just how it is: https://www.kotaku.com.au/2020/01/why-video-games-are-delayed-so-often/
We've had cynics like you preaching failure back when they reached 100$millions back in 2015 lol
Delivering the game faster was never the goal so It will be ready when it's ready.
If they hit 400$million in funding? If? Is still any doubt? They've made this money with an alpha build lol. As the game gets more and more fleshed out they will only be making more. As showed by the last 2 record years of massively of progressively funding growth.

What news article are you referring to exactly ?
This one here at MMORPG.com ?
Because the sentence "The game has long since reached all its stretch goals, which stopped at $65 million" is wrong. A mistake by the author of this news piece here.
CIG did not say that.
The fans writing here in the SC subforum did not say that.
There are certainly no ads that claim that. Not even paid ones. In fact, there ARE no paid ads ;-)
No streamers that i know of make that claim.
So you can call out the author of the news article for reporting wrong information. And thats it .. nothing more, nothing less.
