Why does this game still exist...if you played one season you played them all...just click to kill 100 mobs instantly it's not a game of skill it's a game of mouse clicking with dumb mechanics each season. Make a new game and throw out the trash
I guess you just don't "get" the genre. That's fine.

Wow, spoken like someone who has true hatred towards the game. Not sure what it did to you....
That said, this is the only ARPG that keeps pumping out content, new items, new skills, new everything for the game. More content = people continue to play. Not all the leagues they come out with are great but at least they're still pumping out content. No other ARPG can really say the same.
Btw, might wanna go get that hatred checked somewhere bud. Not good for you.

85+ thousand played it in last 24 hours according to steam charts so obviously many disagree with you.

So, instead of lashing back at you.. I guess I'll try and explain why many; myself included; enjoy the game and the league system it brings. Most of the people who play Path of Exile like mindless grinding that Path of Exile offers. Much like Diablo. Click and kill a ton of enemies on your screen. To some, it's a satisfying feeling. Many others enjoy the loot aspect of the game. For myself; I enjoy the build diversity the game offers. While yes there are meta builds, the game offers a ton of customization to a point where you can essentially play a new build every league. It's enough to not feel repetitive to me. Every league; I try to play something new. While yes; I may not enjoy doing the story over and over again, it's fast enough to not get in the way or burn me out. You can generally burn past the story in about a day or two if you play for about 4 or 5 hours each day.
The whole top down, loot based, ARPG genre of games have been popular for a very long time. Diablo being one of the many games that popularized the genre. Path of Exile managed to refine some of those key features that Diablo 2 had while also doing its own thing which is why Path of Exile became popular. And with the recent announcement of the revamp to the game (Path of Exile 2), many are excited to jump back into the game.
You might not like these type of games, and that is fine; but what I explained above is why many still enjoy the game. GGG has done an excellent job of keeping the game fresh with new mechanics, new skills, new items, and new content over the years.
It's not all zoom zoom like last expansion...and because that difficulty is now gone (even though I didn't like it lol...) I just can't find the reason or want to login this expansion. Got to yellow maps and I'm just like y'know? I feel like they beat the orc down before I even got to fight it...or something.
It's weird I know lol. Maybe I'll play again someday I don't know. I'm playing SC2 custom maps and the LoL Auto Battler right now mostly when I'm not playing my main SWL. I used to do SWL main then LoL + POE.

It certainly has become stale - it's a couple of acts with a tiny bit of story, once you pass them one time, all that is left is grinding, leagues and rerolling. If that's not your jam, then maybe something else is...
I enjoyed PoE in the beginning, but after hundreds of hours in Diablo 2, I got easily bored with it.

that number is peak concurrent (on steam only)- not 24 hour total

Agreed it is highest number of players playing at the same time on Steam only. I didn't want to rub it in and talk about those not playing on the steam platform since I do not have those numbers. So that would be speculation but I think the Steam numbers are pretty impressive on their own. Also I have no idea the total number but that was the 24 hour peak number of players who were playing at the same time (concurrent).
The way I wrote it sounded like a total which must have been far higher. Sorry about that. Thanks for pointing that out.
You can compare the numbers over a 24 hour peak period between Wolcen, Grim Dawn and Path of Exile. Path of Exile's numbers speak for themselves and I personally think POE is a fantastic example of how game play trumps graphics every single time.

Well, I played a bunch of ARPG. I usually enjoy them. Yes I do like the mass-killing and the character building. However, POE (the most aclaimed one) plays too much like a lawn-mower-casino-looting machine than a game. At high level most enemies disappear on sight. There is no skill involved at some point, which IMO makes the game boring. It takes the genre to an extreme, I don't like.
I prefer ARPGs when at least positioning has an impact. Skill shots make them even better.
So the concept of skill should not be dismissed from an ARPG.

It's not perfect, but it's damned good and GGG somehow made it work as a true F2P with reasonable MTX. And they are making a new game, and are merging the sequel into the base game with the extra acts and features into one coherent package.
I like this genre but POE graphics turns me off. This is not a "poor" understaffed company anymore compare to when they first started, they made tons of money selling skins and loot stash tabs (yes u need to buy stash space)
The only reason people are stuck playing this is because there are no better alternatives thats all.
