Can't help but feel this is a little late to the survival genre party.
Yeah but the thing is, it's in the Conan universe. I don't normally go for any of the current survival games but this one has me intrigued.
100% agree with this. I have no real interest in survival games as a genre, but this one, because it's set in Howard's world, gets my attention in ways that none of the others do.
It's not that I like Howard who was a degerate racist and had an suspect relationship with his mother and then went on to top himself.
I do like the the Hyborian setting.
Oh geez I guess calling others a "racist" no longer only an ignorant liberal political thing they say when they have no argument...too bad it needs to be brought into video games.
Fact is he was a degenerate racist, if you have read any of his books or even done your research you would know this. Now that doesn't mean that his works were not interesting or the world of hyboria is not worth making a game of.
I don't need to have a agruement the fact is he was a rabid racist and also had what some would say an unhealthy relationship with his mother.
Then the degenerate went on to kill himself at the age of 30.
There you go, great ain't it.
That wasn't my point your reading comprehension is lacking today pal. We get to hear every lefty here in the US call everyone that disagrees with them a "racist" it doesn't matter if you think Howard was a racist or not there is no need to bring that up when talking about a video game made by funcom...oh they must be racist too since they make video games based on Howard's lore right???
Who said funcom are racist, your reading comprehension isn't great today is it. Fact is I can bring up what want and we were talking about howard and his world so yeah I can bring up what a degenerate racist he was.
I'll still play this game and buy it, that's nothing to do with Funcom but nice try though lol.

Geez dude slow down when you read. I didn't say anyone said funcom is...it was a rhetorical question based on how the left calls everyone racist these days. Hey I'm guessing you are one of these millennial college kids who found out it's cool to call someone a racist my bad enjoy I guess.
They keep stressing its not a MMORPG, yet list features that have been in them previously. (Xyson)
Eating and drinking to survive are trademarks of survival games, but not exclusive to them.
So why not a MMORPG? Likely number of players per server is small, they didn't bother to say in the annoucement.
Eh, another early access title because they want to "share its development" with their audience.
Cough, cough, BS, the comments about being a smaller, different studio reflect they are just another cash starved indie who need the money to deliver a full game.
Can't wait to see a game launched that isn't early access, seems to be quite the rarity these days.
Honestly I am more interested in trying this than any MMO for the past two years. I am disgusted with the state of things. I am disgusted with all the rehashed theme park MMOs. It looks like survival games such as this have more in common with tabletop (which birthed MMORPGs) than modern MMORPGs do.
If I have to give up large numbers of players in order to have community and sandbox features, so be it.
I've looked down on the survival titles in the past, but there is no denying that they are here to stay. The Steam top 100 (by time played) is littered with them.
Now we have one with a Hyborian setting and that makes for some rather dark and gritty roleplay potential.

If I had a business making a mmoRPG, I would certainly try to frame it as not a mmoRPG. Too much baggage goes along with the term.

That's pretty much where I stand on the issue. I'm such a big Conan fan that I still have AoC on the backup hard drive to this day.
PVE Only servers tho? Oh well, there goes the fun part of the game. If you give people the choice not to fight, then that's the one they'll take. The PVP servers will be ghost towns like AoC's PVP Rage server. So I guess I'll just mark this as a PVE game on my calendar. So much for the visceral blood and gore of the Conan Universe.
Honestly, with PvE servers, I'm in. It's the first survival title I've actually been interested in. Yay!
I really hope this game does well. I hope it sends a message to other developers that there are a hell of a lot of people who aren't interested in PvP.
So catering to both play styles is a brilliant move! We carebears deserve respect too!
This game , needs shelved and a reinvestment into Age of Conan needs to take place.
I sort of agree. Not neccesarily 'shelving' it, but I too would love to see more TLC put into AoC. Haven't played it in a while (did the crafting revamp ever happen?), but it was some of the most fun I've had in an MMO. Absolutely loved the combat, music, and aesthetics.
That said, perhaps AoC's time is soon to be over if they are moving onto new Conan related projects such as this.
Can't help but feel this is a little late to the survival genre party.

Having racist beliefs was pretty common in his time. He never showed any hate towards any group, it was more like he had accepted the common belief in his time and had worked around it. Even he distanced himself from those beliefs in his later works. He was always about cultures, not races.

look I am a pvp'er first, but thats fun to me and you, I will have a character on both types of worlds, cause you know what sometimes I don't like to have to be constantly looking over my shoulder.
who are you to tell people oh well there goes the fun part. You must also be one that likes to camp people 20 levels under you, most people don't like to PVP. Don't blame AOC or CE for making PVP servers dead, blame the fact that less 90% of MMO players would rather PVE and not stress out over being rage camped by some 14 year old
[...] If you give people the choice not to fight, then that's the one they'll take. The PVP servers will be ghost towns like AoC's PVP Rage server.[...]
Rage is already gone, it was a nice experiment but simply there was not enough people for it. And choice is always better than force, forced pvp is even more hostile than forced grouping for example.
Choice on servers is also a must nowadays, since when players are turned away by pvp, it is still better to give them a pve option (and keep them in game), instead let them leave the game itself for good.
Haven't played it in a while (did the crafting revamp ever happen?), but it was some of the most fun I've had in an MMO. Absolutely loved the combat, music, and aesthetics.
Nope, crafting revamp was officially skipped after many years in the works, somewhere around Exiles was announced. That's why some has high hopes for the crafting in it, while others said it's simply a money-grab, they didn't want to add the new crafting in AoC, instead sell it as a standalone game (don't quote me on this, those are just mean rumours - until the launch. But there were dev diaries over the years, so when Exiles goes live, it will be easy to compare the actual crafting with the planned crafting revamp )

Agree 100%.
Collecting berries and gathering resources and "surviving" on a PvE server becomes so easy that it renders that game pointless and boring very fast.
Seriously - there is NO longterm fun there at all - this is why survival PvE games don't have any longevity as it's beyond easy to "beat" the NPCs and survival becomes trivial.
I can't think of anything more dreadful than a survival PvE game.... (unless it has crazy sandbox depth of systems to save the day)
The issue is every survival game does the forced pvp thing. There is room for pve games... they don't all have to have pvp. Long as the pve has good power to it. Like kind of a... tricky pvp system. You summon monsters to attack an area or town or can lead creatures to the area and watch as they tear it apart.

Taking the PvP aspect out is like taking the venom out of a cobra, now it's just a rope. "I never left town, I just gathered berries and water from the same river and bush. Did I win?" No risk without the PvP. But to each their own.
I've loved a lot of these survival games. Even the cheesy ones like Un-turned. Amusing to headshot an unsuspecting friend here and there too.
The fact is "hardcore" pvp is a dying breed. It's clear players are not interested in playing hours and hours only to be ganked by some 14 year old and lose everything. Those saying pve is "easy mode" are wrong it's not "easy mode" just because you don't have to worry about a group of teens spawn camping you.
Hey I get it some of you think it's cool to spawn camp and destroy other people's fun and have this crazy mentality your opinion is the only right one and therefore there should only be a pvp sever. Yeah let's alienate the majority of gamers just so a couple hardcore pvpers can feel important clearly you guys who feel this way have never run a business.
Having both a pvp and a pve server is the right thing so more players can enjoy the game.
The good thing is, is that you can play it the way you like.
PvP
PvE
Single player
Public server
Private Server
Don't see much to bitch about in this regard. Advertising being able to play single player, is pretty much saying that the PvE mechanics will be pretty strong.

what people don't understand is multiple server types allow people to transition
if its a pvp only server game, then 75% at least of the player base is gone right away.
knowing from personal experience, sometimes I like to start out on PVE servers and learn the game, learn my character a bit. Its how I started gaming, way back in Asheron's Call I played for 2 years on Harvestgain(PVE) and once I felt comfortable, I created a character on Darktide, and had a lot of fun.
had it only had pvp, I might have logged into game, got killed 5 times in 2 minutes and quit, never to look back at the game
I had a friend play WOW with me who never pvp'd, I finally got him into BG's, then Arenas, then the next expansion we rerolled on a pvp server, that again could never happen in a pvp only game
They should do it like that mmo Last Chaos did- make it so you could play on whatever server type you wanted when you felt like it regardless of what server type you created the char on. You wasn't locked onto a pvp or pve server with the character you made on it, you could switch between pvp or pve at will.

Limited to about 75 players per server.
