As someone who loves these types of games in theory, can anyone who currently plays give me some insight into the general health and state of this game and its servers?
The steep price has kept me away for most of its early life but I find myself without a good multiplayer atm to accompany my ever increasing list of single player games and I keep coming back to look at this?
Is it a game where, as the posters above stated, a smaller population is viable. Maybe even vibrant and active within their own community, or is it pretty much dead? Would a new player who knows next to nothing about the game going in be able to get any value for their money here?
I'm not typically a graphics whore, but this game is just ugly to look at from the animations up, and the performance was pretty bad when I played. Tons of rubber-banding. Has some good systems, willing to give it another try if they addressed this stuff.
I've been playing this game off and on for years. The performance isn't bad. There were some trouble spots in the past, but those have mostly been improved. The graphics and animations aren't great, but are much better than they were.
The strength of this game is that it gives you a ton of options, and they churn out new content at a surprisingly fast rate. Project Gorgon has a lot of really great ideas going for it, it's the execution that's really lacking.
Mostly in the performance and presentation of the game. Anyone who says it doesn't have performance issues is lying or incompetent. The game runs like a one legged dog stuck in mud.
If the recent update to Unity helped, then PG is slightly worth checking out. If not, don't even bother.
Not only that but you don't call your game a BETA test when you just keep making new content while not improving the very first zone you ever made.
Like Eric might think to himself he has done improvements updates but i stepped into the game on a few occasions and it always looked the same. The only change i noticed was about 4 years ago he made combat worse and way more handcuffed.
Great ideas on paper but a 1-2 man show is not how you build a AAA mmorpg. Also i would not go blaming or even hint at unity being an issue, the game has always been super low poly,no excuse for bad performance.
If he doesn't like Unity go use the Unreal Engine,it would be practically free for him to use, based on royalties/profits.
IDK how he has managed this game over the years but imo he should have looked for a serious rich partner to make the game a AAA game.I feel with like a team of artists, system designers and serious budget, this game could have actually been a hit.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
My biggest problem with this game is that goddamn ugly targeting box, it hurts my eyes and I just can't get over it. If they've changed it, please let me know!

They did improve the first zone they removed it an reworked the starting area from what it was. Guessing you never saw the game before it came to steam.
The biggest problem with the game is they want to do to much as a small team as you kinda alluded to. A small team cannot just keep adding features upon features. At some point you have to stop and look at what you have and make it better. They have done that here or there over the years, but not enough.
The biggest problem with the game for most today would be the aged graphics and slowness of everything.
All the different things you can do are great to be honest. You want to play as a cow go play as a cow. I hate the game didn't do better but to be honest I never thought it would get the attention of the main stream players.

Project Gorgon is a very fun game. There are very many different things to do, whether it be skills to learn and raise, dungeons to run, places to explore, or people to meet. There is much more than even this but I don't want to go into every single little detail as it would take way too much time.
Let's just say this. I am 45 years old and have been gaming since the early years of the Atari 2600 and the Atari 800XL computer. I am very picky when it comes to games, especially MMO's and RPG's. Project Gorgon doesn't have the greatest graphics and there are some issues but, overall, I think most people will find the game enjoyable and like its nostalgia.
My advice is to play the game slowly at first and don't be in any rush to level or explore every zone. Take your time to learn the many different systems in the game, ask the community in chat as you go as they are usually very willing to help you, and use the wiki when you need to.
I think the main reason most people would end up not liking or giving up on the game is if they try to rush through it and/or are impatient and unwilling to spend time learning or figuring things out.
I'm not typically a graphics whore, but this game is just ugly to look at from the animations up, and the performance was pretty bad when I played. Tons of rubber-banding. Has some good systems, willing to give it another try if they addressed this stuff.
Most of the issues you are explaining are supposed to have been specifically due to the Unity engine and the newest Unity engine that they are now using is supposed to resolve almost all of these issues. As far as the outdated graphics, I 'm not sure if the new engine improves the graphics at all though.
Point being, now would be the time to log back in and see if the new Unity engine actually has fixed the rubberbanding issues you had in the past.
My biggest complaint was the issue where you would be walking and barely turn the camera view and it would spin 180 degrees and you'd be running in the complete opposite direction. That issue is supposed to be fixed now. I personally haven't had a chance to log in since the update so I can't say whether that issue is now fixed.
Don't bother with this game, the moderators on both the forums and Steam, delete comments and ban people that spell out the truth about the game - how nothing has changed about it in 5 years. The only thing they change was the UI and it's still oversized and ugly with lots of redundant elements - there are your HP and MP resources shown on two different places - one on the top left like WoW and most other traditional MMOs, and second around your action bar like two Diablo-like orbs, which makes absolutely zero sense.
The character models have this annoying posture (probably all races and genres using the same skeleton) that they stand like they're on the catwalk or something.
Combat feels really janky, the kind of jank similar to LOTRO where not only it's not satisfying to fight mobs, but it's outright depressing.
The armors in the game look like some colorful spandex or pajamas as they completely wrap around the model and have zero volume of their own, the colors are also the worst clown-like colors possible that don't even match the textures - like a bright red chainmail that somehow magically wraps around your body like spandex.
There is also this white rectangle whenever you select another player, NPC or a mob and it's really immersion-breaking and annoying and it has been suggested by multitude of people to be removed and replaced with something less glaring, but the developers outright refuse to do it and in fact insist that this is how they envision it to beforever despite lots of folks disagreeing with this.
They have a bandwagon of fanboys that will literally destroy you if you are doing anything other than praising this game as the gift from the gods to humankind.
Also there were a handful negative reviews on Steam from people with 400+ hours who carefully explained all the problems with this game and how little it has changed over the years and whenever something changes, it's mostly for the worse, like breaking character builds and making many builds people made for themselves to have fun so useless that they were forced to respec to some cookie-cutter builds that the developers think everyone should use... Despite the fact tha the game is supposed to allow you the freedom to evolve your characters' skills the way you want, not be restricted to 1-2 cookie cutter builds.
And these reviews were deleted/hidden after that so potential customers can only see the good reviews and get tricked into buying this garbage game, that's a borderline scam.

Well I like to describe myself as a graphics stud, that way I have no shame when remembering that really it should be all about the gameplay not the graphics. So with you here, my minimum graphic reequipments for a MMO are the Lotro level, which is actually still decent.
Don't bother with this game, the moderators on both the forums and Steam, delete comments and ban people that spell out the truth about the game - how nothing has changed about it in 5 years.
WTF are you talking about? They have added a ridiculous amount of content in the last 5 years.
The game was too much of a grind for my taste. This coming from a player who started with EverQuest back in 1999 and had a love / hate relationship with its grindy gameplay.
"The steep price has kept me away for most of its early life but I find

It was free for quite a few years while they were developing it.....It was always just meh to me. Not good, not bad. Once it went to beta and they started charging I was done. It definitely was not worth $40.

Only thing I can't disagree on in some respects here is the LOTRO comment, because I never played. Content has changed a lot in 5 years. The UI is pretty customizable, and your comments on it are based on features that you can customize... The models aren't great, and some of the armor might not have the bulk of a WoW clone, but superficial stuff aside, the amount of content and options is disproportionately greater than what you would see in a AAA mmo these days, coming from a small indie Dev team. Character builds and gear design carry a lot of options, even with the same combat skill selections. I'm not sure what you meant by cookie cutter builds. There are a lot of viable combinations for both solo and group content. You clearly have a strong opinion on the game, but your supporting arguments can be refuted by anyone having logged on recently.
It's a grinding game, but the game gives you a lot of goals to strive for, from quests to work orders, gaining favor with NPCs and gaining new powers and recipes. They also have a number of innovative designs. They've turned every aspect of the game into a progression system.
The community is great. Every time I go back to play, there are always people playing.
I was always curious what is so special and innovative about the game and its expansive skill system. I asked around but never got a solid answer. All I could see being repeated was: you can be an animal, you can level death, it is classless and encourages exploration.
To me, the skills specifically sounded like just a way to encourage clicking objects around the world and talking to NPC's:
- click item "a" to level skill "A" - talk to NPC "b" and gain favor (aka standard reputation system) to get access to skill "B" - get skills "C" and "D" up so you can access skill "E"
Makes exploration and interaction with the world more fun but nothing innovative. It does not sound so much different from what some themeparks do to get certain skills or items. Like getting Mawdrey or the Skyscale mount in GW2:
But I might be missing something since I just tried the island demo.
Well, you aren’t entirely wrong. What Project Gorgon does however offer is a tremendous amount of these skills and a classless system to combine them with. Also, some of these skills are entire classes with unique subsystems with lots of details, like the cow you mentioned. Turning into an animal might not be special by itself but being able to produce milk, eat grass as a heal, learn beast speak etc. etc. means you can play the game from an entirely different perspective.
Now combine that with an almost Diablo like quality of loot with which you can fine tune your build and you have an MMORPG where playing and building a character is taken to a whole new level.
Its also clunky, quite resource heavy and quite ugly, it has an insane amount of heart though and an actual world to play in. And these last two things alone makes it stand out from 95% of the other MMORPGs out there.

'the only way he could nail it any better is if he used a cross.'
Kyleran on yours sincerely
'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
Gdemami absolutely not being an armchair developer
I played the demo and liked it, cool systems, some things innovated, but waited for a sale to buy it and realized i get my fix from a different game while i do other things. Either way, it is fun, but i have to be picky with games, i wish i had unlimited time to play games so that i could enjoy a lot of other games, but i just dont do that.

Well said, not to mention there are some innovative ideas in the game. I can name 2 off the top of my head, of course people may like or dislike them. First is the boss curse system, where in if you don't beat certain bosses they curse you and you cannot remove it till you beat them. Some cures are just annoying while some really suck. The second is words of power. There are a number of ways to learn them and they can do many things. Some hurt or kill you lol but that will only bring up your dying lvl.
I actually liked the curse system.
I mean, to me, one has to go into this game knowing what it is. It's a game made by 2 people. I don't like everything about it but for a game made by 2 people, they are trying to create something that is close to their hearts. NOT a AAA game as Wizardry said.
It's always better to know what one is getting themselves into and to temper expectations accordingly.

I really like the way they handle gear. Your abilities get stronger as you level up and obtain better versions of them, but gear is where you really build your character. When you kill a mob, any gear the mob drops will likely have treasure effects that match your combat skills. I usually run Sword/Mentalism on my main. If I use that combination of skills to kill a mob and the mob drops a sword, the sword will most likely have sword and mentalism treasure effects.
There is also a system for extracting treasure effects from items and applying them to other items. You can also re-roll treasure effects on an item. So if you get something that is really good, but not quite perfect, you can fix it. It takes time and effort, but you can customize your gear however you want. You get more abilities in each combat skill than you can use at once, so you have to choose which abilities you are going to focus on in your gear. But you might have a completely different set of gear that enhances a different set of abilities, for use it different situations.
There are very few limits on what you can do in game with a single character. You can learn nearly every skill and you can switch builds with the click of a button (you create loadouts for your abilities and gear).
Some other unique things about the game:
Boss mobs will curse you if you die to them. The boss on the newbie island will increase the size of your head and you can't wear a helm while suffering from the curse. Another boss will curse you by showing up every so often and attacking you (a very weak version of her). Another boss will turn you into a deer if you die to him, and you'll have to drink an un-deer potion to remove it. Most other bosses, you just have to defeat the boss to get rid of the curse.
You don't just craft stuff over and over to level your crafting skills. You can, but there are work orders. You are always better off crafting to fill work orders so that you make money at the same time you are leveling.
In addition to work orders provided by the game, players can post requests for items and set a payment amount. Sometimes if I have an excess of something, like Strange Dirt, I'll check the player board. There's usually someone buying it.
Some zones will kill you if you aren't careful. There are some zones that are really cold. Certain gear and abilities can help to mitigate it, and there are things like campfires and blankets that you can use, but you have to be prepared when you go to these places. There are also desert zones, where you have to drink occasionally so you don't die of thirst.
Some mobs can give you diseases or break your bones. There are various ways to remove/fix them, depending on the severity.
Mobs have Rage, which fills as they fight. When it is full, they use their rage abilities, which are usually more damaging/bad for you (like Ogres breaking bones). Managing the mob's rage, particularly for tougher mobs, is important.
There's a casino. There are 3 different games, and you can bet on fights.
That's just a bunch of stuff off the top of my head. None of it is groundbreaking, but it's just a lot of little things that add up to make the game different.
Did they ever give people more inventory. That was a huge turnoff for me. Barely any inventory, running from town to town just to get a couple more inventory spaces. Just felt like a complete time waster.

I don't think a dev can do that on Steam, can they?
Can you imagine if Steam allowed developers to just get rid of negative reviews as they saw fit?
So I downloaded this again last night and it does look a lot better. Also, some of the issues have been fixed. Didn't notice any "rubber-banding."
And my armor looks better so that was a plus.
It's still an indy game and behaves like an indy game. For example, I'm attacked by a tiger and the tiger is partially inside my avatar as it rushes to attack me.
Still, I had fun so I think I'm going to play it for a while.

WTF are you talking about? They have added a ridiculous amount of content in the last 5 years.

And my armor looks better so that was a plus.
It's still an indy game and behaves like an indy game. For example, I'm attacked by a tiger and the tiger is partially inside my avatar as it rushes to attack me.
Still, I had fun so I think I'm going to play it for a while.
