I do wonder if there is a parallel elsewhere in gaming for this? They are creating a game within a game, not like a stand alone BR, it seems more like a solo/group theme park game in a simulation game. Thats got to cause problems, not on the level of PvP and PvE but is it a good fit?
The closest I can think of was a reasonable idea. 38 Studios released Kingdoms of Amalur before the MMO as a way to bring in cash.
They (38 Studios) got screwed by a really badly done contract with their publisher. The game would have had to be #1 with a bullet to get them what they needed.
For CIG, a poorly received product (lackluster SQ42) would directly impact their system of finances. Better to make a ludicrous roadmap excuse than endanger their funding. They still might be forced to make another round of investor funding. Enough of that, and they could lose control of the project. Which I think is the best chance for the Star Citizen.
That may be a good example, but do you think say SQ42 is separate enough to ever be released as a stand alone game? I agree that they would think its better to keep fobbing fans off, but if they did decided to do this say next year how practical would it even be to attempt?
They made a choice, a long time ago, to tie SQ42 to SC. Something about using the same assets for each. I suspect they've had problems with refactoring (because Chris Roberts), which may have made much of their early work untenable. And their focus wanders about at the whim of top management. CIG should be able to release it, but then they should have been able to release years ago, so it really is a question mark.
When their communication over a ROADMAP is so terrible, think about how bad it is for other internal things.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

That's not even the issue.
They could easily do a one paragraph update today on what people actually want to know about SQ42. Things like how close to beta is it really? What have you changed about the game that was supposed to released in 2017 to cause these delays?
Roadmaps and roadmaps to roadmaps are just their way of avoiding giving a direct and honest answer to those questions.

Yup! They'd have been better off just publishing a short lie about it. And they can always get an extra year with Covid excuse.
There were previous reports about designers working on things for a month or so, and then being told when they turned in their work that 'we're not doing it that way anymore'. The management sycophants around CR are not chosen for their design skill (although a few do have it).
