And what? You gonna give them a job. This is systemic problem.
If everyone walks out the company either has to offer more cash to get them to stay or they just prove the market demand for that job with that pay is right. Asking an outside force to come in and "fix" your systemic problem is a problem. Who gets to set the rates? Who gets to pick what jobs are important and which are not?
While unions in the past killed themselves by becoming parasites instead of partners with companies they serve a purpose is done right.
People just need to stop thinking that flipping burgers at McD's is a job that should support a family by itself.
If we let market supply and demand cause a situation where many people can't see viable alternatives to support their family legally, many of those people will turn into crime, and eventually it's bad for the society too.
There must be a balance between free market and taking care that vast enough majority can live their lives legally. If that balance is broken it becomes a systemic problem.
There are always alternatives. The flip side is that we just reward people for doing nothing. And this is where we are heading with the universal basic income concept. It sounds so great on paper, but the reality is that eventually the people become 100% dependent on the government or the "company" (because in many cases the lines are blurring). We end up in a Wall-E situation.
This is why I fear companies like Amazon.

It is easy to say we need a fair system but how are you creating it? How much is enough? What level of luxury does the world get to live in? The balance is always broken one way or the other. It is a pendulum that never stops swinging.

You end up owned by the government and they determine what you need and do not need. They also determine when you are not needed....*gunshot*
I think those are areas that the government should address.
How? The 0.74% that hold the worlds wealth own the politicians. The 0.74% that own the worlds wealth also own the News Outlets. The whole system in broken.

We elect people who will greatly restrict the abuse. We stop voting for a party and vote for people who will do what we want. The amount of money you need to get elected requires the backing of the rich and if they dont need the rich backing, it means they are already the rich.
Why should the common person making minimum wage have to give up their income to get that wealthy 0.74% to consider them? How long will they need to go before they do consider them? Would they instead just hire other people needing work over giving them a raise? Most people live paycheck to paycheck, they cant afford giving up one paycheck. Why can't the 0.74% holding most of the worlds wealth just do the right thing and look at the human equation?
Why should I or anyone else care or have to be responsible for people that work for the minimum wage?
If i make $100 K or 1 million or more, why is it i should give others some? Fair? Since when is life supposed to be anything other than you get what you settle for, and are willing to work for, not just bitch and moan.
I also started working many, many years ago for minimum wage. But i sure as hell did not settle for that. I put in the effort and time i needed to to get to where i was comfortable with my income and life.
I sure did not worry about what my boss or the person that owned the company was making, i worked as hard as i could to make myself and my earning potential what i needed to be happy.
I have people in my family that are like this, always asking others for help and having so many stories as to why they can not make ends meet. I also have those that worked their tails off and are comfortable in their lives.
People that have minimum wage jobs and SETTLE for that...ya zero reason for me to care. Now let the excuses for why people stay in minimum wage jobs begin.....................
Corporate greed is a chronic global problem - the huge pay gap between CEOs/other top execs and everyone else in the company is bordering on absurd.
You take top/best employees in the company and they make X amount - but CEO makes more than 20 times that - it's complete idiocy.
Especially the fact that most CEOs are jack shit and don't even deserve anywhere near 40million pay.
Supply and demand. Your "top" employee is likely a dime a dozen in the world, someone qualified to run the corporation is not. You have to put up a competitive salary to obtain/retain people who are not going to run your corporation into the ground. And there is only one CEO, whereas their may be tens of thousands of employees. You can't pay everyone 6 figures.
You want CEO pay? Work hard, go to college (yes there are many ways for the poor even), and become a CEO yourself. Or you can just keep dumping the CEO's trash and complaining about how much you make.
I grew up in Florida with no AC because my parents could not afford to repair it. They certainly could not send me to school. I joined the Army and they paid for my college. I am now 3 credits shy of my Masters, yet I had to sweat as soon as I got out of the shower until I was 18.
"It seems that more than 50% of the company’s employees are unhappy in their current compensation. An anonymous spreadsheet was created and circulated around Blizzard. Bloomberg reports that most raises are actually below 10%. "
1. No shit... I'm sure that at least 50% of employees in most companies wish they made more money.
2. Outside of promotions I have never received any annual raise that was close to 10%. Last 2 years my company gave blanket 3% and 2% raises.
Sure, than they would say "Ok , we will keep working...", but guess what? They will no longer hold true to the company vision and they will be "whatever".
So if a company is having (much) higher revenues every year, is SAFER to also increase workers wages, if you want them to keep working like before and keep the company revenues growing. 2/3 % will not help. Not at all.
And stop making this comparation with other companies OUT of this industry. Every industry is different.
Also I have no problem if an CEO is making this much money, IF, the workers are also happy with the company and with their wages. When the workers starts to "lose hope", because of the salary, the said company will, sooner rather then later, collapse. Not totally, but .. to a point where it will be very hard to "come back".
And I kinda see this ...trend @ Blizzard!
So you would support a pay for performance model? When the company makes a lot of money the folks get large raises and when the company loses a lot of money they get salary reductions? Or in your mind does it only work one way?
It would be nice for a company to share a great year by handing out bonuses. That's more sustainable than adjusting base pay.
Executive bonuses are already tied to performance in most companies. Many, if not most, companies don't offer bonuses to anyone below the top level. It is a one way system already, and that is a big problem. It generally is not the executives salary that is out of line, it is their total compensation -- salary + bonuses + stock options, etc.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Its not always settling. What if you grow up in a community that the schools are not funded well? and people have to fight to get a spot for their kids to get in a class room? You dont get the advantage of the education you should, how will you take a step up then as you put it? What if you grow up in the 3rd world country where business like Cokeacola drain local water to make their product and pump out sludge that poisons the land? Then leave when the water sources are polluted? What do you do to take a step up for the better then?
If their CEO was any kind of real leader he'd take a reduction in salary and spread that around to the people who work for the company so that they don't have to struggle anymore. He's not a real leader though, which explains plenty about their products to me.

We can discuss the degree of this, but my question was really more about whether it should just flow one way... where companies pay extra in good years but when a company loses money employees make the same amount.

The article says that the skilled employees like Producers and Programmers were making $100k. The positions like game testers were making minimum wage. Now we can have a rational discussion about what minimum wage should be, but in general, a job as a game tester would not be a career but a starter job not meant to support a family.
I can't re-read the Bloomberg article as I am out of free articles but that's what I recall from reading it.
But as I said above... if they are complaining about most raises being below 10% then they have a disconnect from reality.
I am not here to discuss 10% raises - that's completely unsustainable longterm as it's based on "infinite revenue growth" model that is complete bullshit
What the real problem is that minimum wage should be able to provide for basic human needs:
1. Ability to buy food to survive 2. Ability to buy safe shelter 3. Ability to pay for healthcare
So basic human needs - food/water, safe shelter, healthcare
in US - this is impossible in vast majority of cases - hence the problem
Aaaaand bingo! When a 40 hour a week job can’t pay for the basics something is broken. “Work harder” is looking at it completely backwards and always comes from someone higher up looking down. Proper minimum wage would be nice, as would having some restrictions on certain prices, say the stuff a human needs to survive.

because humans by nature are not herd animals. We are self interested animals that like to live in a group. There is a big difference. You are not going to be able to change that.

CEOs are not leaders - but are ivy league twats that hold their position because they are in the same inner circle of other ivy league twats.
Yes there are exception to this - usually CEOs that started their own companies and have built them up themselves - those guys have actual substance.
But vast majority of CEOs are there because of their rich families and rich friends and being able to graduate from rich schools.
I am surprised your bigotry against rich people hasn't gotten you a forum time out yet. . .
. . .oh wait it is 2020, hating the rich is high fashion now.

Wanting a fair distribution of wealth is not hating the wealthy. There are wealthy that are being very fair with their wealth. Look at Bill Gates and how he has spent billions to better the world, from toilet that can be used in 3rd world countries, fair pay for their staff, W@H options for all staff, working to help fix global warming by making pants that are reversing that effect. Making money is not the problem, its what they do with it. Funny thing is, Bill Gates still gets to live a really great life along with all he has done thats right.
I do not work in the gaming industry. But I have long heard rumors about long hours, toxic work places, and low pay. I'm sure there are exceptions. But my heart goes out to people in this situation. I'm glad this article was written to help shine a light on these practices.

Look at the list and say that it is fair. It is not.
Well, there must be a reason or three or more somewhere why Blizzard games are getting crappier lately. Unhappy unmotivated employees would be a decent starting point

and how that would work exactly? you know why low ends jobs pay little? because anyone normally can do it, these jobs wa supose to be things you do till you finish education/get experience, find something better. there is no other end to it, better pay require more responsabilitys, and not many will do your job.
you can argue for CEOs being paid what he is paid is a waste and that I agree, but the thing is people who are paying him belive he is worthy that much, you are paid what you give in return, if not you leave for a better job
