In some cases, the main character of any MMORPG is the world you inhabit. The world breathes life into the stories, the people and more in any compelling story. Some of the greatest MMORPGs have iconic locations that stick with us long after we've moved on. What is your favorite?

EQ1 - Kelethin. I loved that tree city.
1. As a newbie at low levels I used to run the Glendonwood Deungeon over and over for the platemail hauberk. I literally could run the route in my sleep and it was the first time in my life playing video games where I felt like a god for knowing the route.
2. As a veteran at low levels I would level up up in the Lugian citadels, specifically the citadel near Qalaba'r as it was the least crowded. Most AC'ers leveled up on Olthoi but I preffered the Lugians because the slower swing speeds and the ability to position at corners removed almost any need for stamina issues. since you weren';t as surrounded as you were with the bugs.
3. As a newbie at higher level Ft Teth was the shit. I would camp the walls of the keep and safely shoot Umbris and Panumbra Shadows from a distant and would be all giddy with excitement whenever I landed a Imperil spell against their high magic defense. And the loot was amazing.
4. As a veteran at higher levels I preferred the solitude of hunting solo on Aerlinthe Island. Mostly Banderlings and Drudges since the Golems were all camped by mages.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

2024: 47 years on the Net.
I still remember the first time I saw the place after exiting the elevators from the ruins above. I was amazed by everything, but what I really loved was the way the music and ambiance matched the muck and the skulls everywhere. Best ‘evil’ city since Neriak (EQ).
Honorable mentions to Kithicor Forest, Highpass Keep, The Grey, Azshara, and Velketor’s Labyrinth.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Not only did I come across it "by chance" but it was very serene and other worldly with the exception of having to keep a look out for Orfen. Which to me was also fun.
Also, the original Old Forest in Lord of the Rings Online.

In BDO, there are so many places. I was impressed the first time I saw Calpheon by its size, the sheer amount of details, and the number of NPCs. And even if they are mostly static and give a wax museum feeling, it is so much better than the handful of quest givers we usually see in other MMOs.
In BDO, I like also the "mapless" area, namely the desert and the ocean. The feeling of being lost, reinforces the exploration pleasure. I just wish all these wonderful areas would be more meaningful gameplay wise.
Also my housing dimension in Rift, but that was an area I customized not some random spot, so it's different.

Welcome to the boards!
I had started in Surefall Glade and there was only iron rations and if you remember they cost over a gold. Being a new player I was unable to buy them. I was automatically consuming every egg and those damn green snakes in Qeynos hills were not dropping many, almost the instant they went into my inventory. I was so hungry and I decided okay time to go to Qeynos. I think forage then was level 5 so no go there.
Follow the road, yeah okay great, dead two times and two corpse retrievals later I finally make it to the zone to Qeynos and I literally wept when I saw the front gates. Yeah most beautiful sight ever.
Kelethin for sure...Especially when you have a few too many and try to run across the bridges......
I'm playing SWG for the first time in my life since November 2019, haven't maxed out a character yet, still a level 71 Commando and haven't been to all planets, but out of the ones I was on, probably Naboo was the most pleasant to look at, second was Corelia, I still haven't been to Yavin 4 or Endor, but I'm thinking I'm gonna like those two a lot.
I couldn't even begin to tell you how many hours I spent in DF! Not my favorite DAoC place, but it's up there.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
Try Eve Echoes on mobile you old gamers out there, nice to sit back and chase people around without the back pain and carpal tunnel surgery. Only missed a few days of skill training! ^^
