My time would have been more enjoyable though if I had just learned a few things earlier that New World fails to teach you. Here are 7 things that I wish I knew before playing New World.

Yesterday i started to see a real influence from games like Destiny and shooters like Tom Clancy's.
All immersion breaking stuff, like glowing lights coming off loot, random "no idea how they got there"chests. Some of the nodes don't even look part of the world, they look like a computer programmer jotted them into the game. You run past fauna and you see these little white circles.
This has been one of my biggest peeves of game design the last 10 years "besides somersaults".That is developers putting all kinds of MARKERS in the world, stuff that should NOT be there or visible, they ruin the immersive feeling of being in a world.
Combat has looked very weak,no idea why people were saying combat is good.I noticed that often players would just ignore the dodge out of the way and just stand there and trade strikes.Today a streamer said something that seriously baffled me.He said he enjoyed the harvesting.......zzzzzzzzzzzzz oh really?
He walked past 90% of the harvesting, the only time he stopped was at the large pile of bones or whatever they are. Then his friend mentions that he can't stand harvesting in Ark,again i am thinking, well this isn't any better,so is he just being a shill or what?
That is a big problem with gaming now,so many people have a vested interest in making money from posting shill videos.IMO the best way to watch a streamer is to turn the volume off. That way if you are there to learn about the game a bit, you'll just focus on what you see and not on what you hear from the streamer.
I have yet to see a single thing that screams OMG you need to play this game.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
That being said there's a few things I would like to add to OP post.
Houses - yeah at preview, they are what one would call "Time-share"(Think Black Desert online instanced housing)...yes you can purchase a house in the first town you come to..price from 1.5-3k gold and you need 15 Town standing with that town..Houses give you an extra teleport every 4 hours instead of just "Recall to Inn" (Every hour) and is quite inexpensive to spend azoth to reset the cooldown. Purchasing a second house runs around 30k and third around 180k. but you can eventually own a house in every settlement town.
Gear Perks - Every piece of gear has a gear score(GS) and some have perks, look closely at the perks and match what suits your playstyle..Some perks include extra resource gathering, wards against the different types on monsters, Fire, electric, void damage, luck on drops. (Not quite as good as Diablo, but a decent start on gear differences)
Tools - As OP stated, upgrade your tools as soon as possible..Using steel tool on skinning gave only +125 harvesting/skinning exp. Using next higher tier Starmetal tool on same monster at same location gave a whopping +425, an additional 300 exp gain. This may not be the case for all resources as there seems to be some RNG in the range of exp gained...IE there appears to be a bottom and top limit for each tier tool and you get exp anywhere in that range.
All in all, New World has taken a step away from the plain garbage it started out to be and is starting to shape up nicely into the next generation TOP mmo. I know those at Amazon games are working diligently at making all the changes from the Full player verses player trash it started out as, into the MMO that will actually bring them income.
Some things to consider - It's still in alpha, the preview is just to let people know how the progress is going and to entice more community input. After the preview they have stated it will go back into NDA and may or may not open the alpha servers again at a later date. (Possibly November according to forums).
I think it's a great start, hope to see more lore immersion, deeper story lines, some downtime activities like mentioned above (Fishing), maybe card or dice games to sit around with company mates. Hope to see everyone at the next iteration of "New World"
Yeah, it's almost guaranteed that hatchet will get nerfed. All other weapons absolutely suck by comparison.
Thanks for that info! I never purchased a house, so I was not aware that it added another teleport spot and that you could buy a home in every town. Thanks for that information!
And I never noticed the increased XP gains from using a higher Tier tool - thanks for that! This makes upgrading the gathering tools all the more imperitive!
That seems like a huge positive to me.
So, You don't like mounts and that means that people who like them shouldn't get them, gotcha.
forgotten characters (Ultima Online,Everquest,DAoC)
Qualme (Shadowbane on Mourning)
Pandamonia (Lineage 2 on Bartz)
Bridgit (Soul of the Ulimate Nation)
deLiber (Aika Online)
Qualme (ArcheAge on Kyrios)
Looking for next PvP game
It is a question of how fast players should be able to get around the game, too much speed and instant travel trivialises a game. But it all depends on how big the game is, if it is big enough mounts are a solid option.
In DF took a few seconds to spawn and unspawn but you could leave the mount in the world to make it quicker
Of course people could also steal your mount..
Still very salty they cannot gank people anymore
But go ahead, defend it & tell the world that this game is a Masterpiece and it's perfect how it is. Attitudes like yours will guarantee servers are dead by the 6 mnth mark.
That your tastes are, you know, like yours and that's all?
They aren't fact or dogma

I really like the world and gorgeous graphics and the lore has great potential although it needs to be fleshed out much more. The UI is also excellent, especially the crafting UI. Speaking of crafting I really appreciated that crafting multiples of the same thing is lightning fast without the additional delays most MMOs feel compelled to add.
The things I'm not crazy about is the lack of meaningful quests, lack of group content, their instanced PvP and PvE end-game events with all kinds of gamy "sign me up" guild-based contraptions.
The combat also feels wrong to me. Both animation lock and long ability cool downs for the meager number of abilities we can slot, many of which don't feel powerful enough to deserve any kind of cool down, just feel like they belong in a tab target game not the action combat they're going for.
And finally, perhaps I'm being ultra picky, but I found the lack of voiced NPC dialogues jarring in 2020. That is pretty well a base requirement for AAA games these days and its absence sticks out.
But hey, I'm willing to wait and see where they go with it and what things they consider a priority to work on.
