In a recent interview on Gamesindustry.biz with New World game director Scot Lane, information has surfaced on how Twitch, action RPGs and survival titles influenced the design of combat in New World. In addition to outlining their influences, Lane is candid about Amazons focus to make New World the next big MMO in an industry that he feels has been largely stagnant.

I happen to move from FFXI the game i consider to have the best combat design/structure of all the mmorpg's so when i moved to FXIV i was very disappointed to see SE dislodge a BETTER combat design for a more controlled shallow design.
BDO was just a joke,i don't even want to get into that again because it gets me hot.
Also a mmorpg should have different combat than a shooter or action type game or a pvp type design.Rpg's can utilize hotbars with many different ideas utilized during combat.A pvp structure cannot do the same because you are busy moving all over the place and ideas like healing are just not the same for again many reasons.
So i'll draw up a couple examples involving healing.Typically in a pvp setting a player will utilize pots or something that has to be fast unless you have long distance fighting like BR's where a player will hide behind a rock or tree and self heal. This again doesn't work in an action based combat design that is more up close and personal. Also a player couldn't utilize a magical healing affect while another player is attacking them, their casting would be constantly interrupted.
So imo this Lane guy doesn't understand how to properly implement combat at all.It should take a very long time to design combat, every single idea has a lot to think about in implementing the ideas. An exampl,e i always like to use is that i feel combat should be full of action and reaction and not just a simple MHW type hit dodge hit dodge hit dodge because that is shallow and to me boring.

I personally feel Atlas an actual survival game has/had the absolute best potential for combat and i am not even a fan of pvp combat but in Atlas it most certainly could work. The reason why it didn't and often doesn't in games is because devs are LAZY and don't do enough testing to make sure the design is sound and free from cheating and exploiting.
Gamer's are scum, they will spend every single minute looking for ways to cheat and exploit a game,so the developer MUST be on top of that before releasing their game and afterwards as well.
Example ,Atlas had thatch wood and stone and with varies blueprints for varied strengths,MORE can be done with that idea including various resistances.Atlas also had both land and water fighting and utilizes pets which could be done way better and while avoiding exploiting.SO Atlas just offered MORE than say TNW world can offer and likel yever will offer,so i am sorry Mr/Lane but TNW will NOT be the best survival game let alone best mmo combat.

I don't know what it may have been like earlier in its development but in the version we all played recently it's definitely not a survival game. It's an mmorpg and I personally much prefer the combat system over the traditional multiple hotbar models of previous games I've played in the past. It needs refining and padding out with more content but has the potential to be the best new mmorpg for years.
Forumwarriors mad....but mostly positive feedback from the community so far..
As far as the negative...they're addressing a lot of that in the live stream with Asmond and friend (whoever it was) which leaves me hopeful
The game needs more cooking time. There is a reason some games are still doing good, they should be completely mindful to that on a players perspective.
