imageElder Scrolls Online - Microsoft Acquires Zenimax Online Media - Parent Company to Bethesda Softworks

In a stark, but not surprising move, Microsoft has acquired Zenimax Online Media, the parent company to Bethesda, which would solidify Microsoft as one of the premiere parent companies of some of the most well known and exciting RPG intellectual properties the gaming industry has come to love over the past several decades. The acquisition will include all of Bethesda's library, including Elder Scrolls, and Fallout.

I've never been a Bethesda fan. I always thought that their lack of polish and QA was inexcusable.

That said, this could be good news for their games. Maybe having someone to crack the whip could result in some actual polish.

I'm really curious to know if this has any implications for ESO. Wouldn't it be crazy if the ESO subscription was rolled into Gamepass? That would be incredible for the consumer.

I remember when MS was the original "evil empire" of home computing. Now, it seems gamers everywhere are hailing them as a paragon.

They're still that, make no mistake. It's just that their gaming branch is putting in overtime ; Phil Spencer is doing AMAZING job.

I literally don't care about the rest of Microsoft at this point.

And I didn't actively think about this takeover, but it makes complete sense. Bethesda's on its knees, probably as cheap now as it's going to be and here comes Microsoft. Makes perfect sense.

Yeah it would be crazy but it ain't happening. FO76 has been on game pass for a while and it does not include their optional sub, Fallout First.

The idea of Bethesda and Obsidian having to play nice again is actually funny. But with both of those in hand, Microsoft now owns 2 of the biggest pillars of the western RPG. I wonder if purchasing Bioware from EA, a studio of ex Bioware developers, or CD Projekt are next.

MS has really changed how they do things. From how they are taking the lead with environmental stuff. Also instead of trying to be the best at everything, they partner with companies now like Android. There is many more changes I could list but in short. MS has really stepped up as a company.

There are more announcement(s) to come.....
Stop it. You can't keep teasing.

In other news, Bungie's CEO denied that they're in talks with them :)

I agree but to clarify i do play their games and i've always wondered how they became more popular with ever growing less than stellar games, in that, to me Morrowind was an amazing game, was a first of its kind so bugs in all was excusable.

Oblivion, i played less, to Skyrim barely played at at all. They became less over time but all the bugs and low QA remained. Same with Fallout, 3 hundreds of hours, and with each new version less and less playtime.

I guess in retro bit of a perfect storm for them in that, og gamers run around spreading the word how amazing ES (morrowind is), gaming attention was starting to grow at a rapid rate, and they pretty much continued to dumb down the games.

I think they are attractive to more of the explorer type. While Morrowind was brilliant, Oblivion and Skyrim are just beautiful to "be" in.

Heck, last night I was testing a new mod that expanded Lydia's dialogue and ended up starting up a completely new character for a completely new play through.

I was marveling how I have probably well over 2500 hours in skyrim yet I can still play and be entertained.

I took that to mean that they have another big western RPG company in their crosshairs, not that they'll be having Obsidian and Bethesda collab (though they probably will).

My hope is that MS getting this company means that ESO will loose their employees that oversee the rather shady cash-shop pricing. Of course it could also mean it gets more shady.

Yeah... I wouldn't count on it. Remember the straight up scumbag video released for Halo 5 Guardians that made fun of people with concerns over its microtransactions?

End result of this, more conformity as Bethesda games become more like Microsofts, one gaming model to rule them all. Diversity is what gaming needs to keep it fresh, outside of indie we seem to have less of that each year.

CD Projekt is Polish and they aren't exactly a tiny studio, I doubt they would fold into MS.
