The idea of Bethesda and Obsidian having to play nice again is actually funny. But with both of those in hand, Microsoft now owns 2 of the biggest pillars of the western RPG. I wonder if purchasing Bioware from EA, a studio of ex Bioware developers, or CD Projekt are next.

CD Projekt is Polish and they aren't exactly a tiny studio, I doubt they would fold into MS.
May be they'll make an offer they would be hard pressed to refuse.

I don't think it's likely, given how much they prize their independence and consumer image. But I also wouldn't call it impossible given Microsoft money.

Not sure what them being Polish has to do with it as the team now has studios now all over the world including US, Canada, England, Sweden and Japan but it is not CD Projekt.
I really, really want to say that this studio that you're hinting at is Eidos Montreal, given that Square has no idea what to do with them.

Deus Ex seems like something Microsoft would want.

I've never been a Bethesda fan. I always thought that their lack of polish and QA was inexcusable.

That said, this could be good news for their games. Maybe having someone to crack the whip could result in some actual polish.

I'm really curious to know if this has any implications for ESO. Wouldn't it be crazy if the ESO subscription was rolled into Gamepass? That would be incredible for the consumer.

I agree but to clarify i do play their games and i've always wondered how they became more popular with ever growing less than stellar games, in that, to me Morrowind was an amazing game, was a first of its kind so bugs in all was excusable.

Oblivion, i played less, to Skyrim barely played at at all. They became less over time but all the bugs and low QA remained. Same with Fallout, 3 hundreds of hours, and with each new version less and less playtime.

I guess in retro bit of a perfect storm for them in that, og gamers run around spreading the word how amazing ES (morrowind is), gaming attention was starting to grow at a rapid rate, and they pretty much continued to dumb down the games.

modders, modders are the ones who really make they games shine, or you belive fallout 3 and 4 plus elder scroll skyrim was this much because of stock game? serious would be better to hire said modders then buy bethesda, unless of course the move was to buy the IPs and then fire all devs from then, and hire the modders to work on said ips. meh dream on I know

Eidos Montreal would be an enormous get... but I don't think that'll happen. That is basically SE's baby right now for the western market.

I mean, Zenimax is a huuuuuge get. If they can get Zenimax, I don't know what would be off the table. I mean obviously Microsoft couldn't pick up.. like.. Epic, not that they'd even want to right now. Rockstar would probably be off the table too, not just that Microsoft has tried too hard to break itself into the GTA style gameplay with crackdown (and failed each time) but I don't see them vying for that kind of developer.

CD Project Red also... I don't see Microsoft wanting it. I don't feel it's on brand with the studios they've acquired.

I'm excited to see what Microsoft does next though.

Normally I'd see this as a bad thing, but Zenimax has made some terrible decisions in the recent past.  I guess MS can't make it worse.

But again, what is Square doing with their western baby? Not a whole lot. I mean the Deus Ex IP is basically on ice right now.

Square's western baby is their eastern games that still sell realllllly well in the west.

But then again, I guess that also means acquiring Crystal Dynamics, which Square apparently do care about.

I could also see MS pulling ESO from PS4 and PS5 when its legal, maybe they just wont get the next DLCs or next Expansion.

Eidos Montreal worked on Marvel's Avengers, and they are working on Guardians of the Galaxy right now as well. It's a big studio so no doubt other stuff is in development.

I remember when MS was the original "evil empire" of home computing. Now, it seems gamers everywhere are hailing them as a paragon.
In all honesty, for gamers they were never really an "evil empire" a la EA, ActiVision and 2K.

Microsoft has always maintained a hands off approach to their gaming studios. At most enforce some deadlines here and there, but never involved themselves creatively. Microsoft Game studios have full creative freedom. Unlike the true evil coorperations like EA, ActiVision and 2K who get intimitely involved in the development of their games to make sure they get maximum monetized with ingame Cash Shops and DLC packs.

My concern with this is for the future of QuakeCon. Just like all the other speculations it looks like we'll just have to wait and see.

Bethesda isn't a tiny studio, either. The time where independent AAA game development studios operating independently without belonging to a massive corporation is coming to a pretty swift end.

If you want to point fingers at the greatest contributor to the shoddy quality of the MMO genre, it's monopolies. They drive the cost of MMO production and stifle innovation and competition.

Except what killed the MMO genre was oversaturation of WoW clones. There was plenty of competition, most of it bad.

Wow, regardless of one's perspective this is a seismic shift in the gaming world I'd think. Also, kudos to the various companies on keeping this pretty tight-lipped too till the official announcement.

Then from WoW clones to MOBAs being the big money maker so MMOs kept trying to be a MMO/MOBA hybrid.

First Microsoft get Obsidian and then they get Bethesda.  Here's hoping we get to see a New Vegas 2 *cross fingers*.

I am also hoping Microsoft push to get rid of that shitty creation engine Bethesda keeps using and replace it with something better for their games.

I admit I'm probably missing something but, how is this a good thing?

A few months ago this forum was up in arms about trying to download PSO2 from the MS store, and all the problems most had with hidden, locked, non-removable files and unrecoverable HD allocation because the game kept eating itself.
Now MS just added another huge studio to their store to botch shit up.

Please explain why this is good.

I think they are attractive to more of the explorer type. While Morrowind was brilliant, Oblivion and Skyrim are just beautiful to "be" in.

Heck, last night I was testing a new mod that expanded Lydia's dialogue and ended up starting up a completely new character for a completely new play through.

I was marveling how I have probably well over 2500 hours in skyrim yet I can still play and be entertained.

Yeah but that's user gen content. The game it self doesn't keep you coming back it's the user generated content. That's how it seems with most of us who touch these rather meh games.

My biggest sin is fo3 with a impossible to track hour count. Never once played it vanilla. Not once.
Won't do it. Bethesda sucks that bad at base game creation.

I'm pretty fucking sure Microsoft will make it's money back on Skyrim HHHHHHDDDD Triple Max edition next year anyhow.

Which is what this is about not new IP's but "rebuilt" brands. Why make new shit when you can just reskin the old. Because let's face it..new game devs come from a really bland school of game design so the old boys and girls really are the go to still.

    It's bipolar here dude.

Pure and simple always has been and the some 50 active users here are all pretty much in the depths of mmofartsmellinggood type of thing.

Next week the user base will lose it's crap over something Sony did or whatever.

no you misunderstand, the "game" is what brought me to stay. I just wanted to test out a mod.

User-generated content can add to what's already there (or in some cases revamp things that people would like changed) But the game is beautiful and fun to be in.

I certainly didn't decide to do a full playthrough on a redone Lydia voice mod.

Having over 2k hours in Skyrim I can assure you there isn't that much user-generated content to make those numbers.

And I'll add I've done many playthroughs "just vanilla" (and my other friend who just plays elder scrolls games has done many playthroughs and refuses to add mods.

I wouldn't sell the game short just because it's not your cup of tea.
