I used to be really into mmorpg. Also really into this forum. However over the last 5-6 years not so much.
Well i have that mmorpg bug again but dont know where to start.
I'll play anything, grindy f2p asian mmos, subscription mmos, mmo lite, arpgs with town hubs etc. Dont care if a game is psw either. Just want something fun with a somewhat active community
Any help would be appreciated.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
Think they have a try for free...and they always have the game on sale different places for just a few bucks.
Not my cup of tea but a lot of people seemed to like it.
Next https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/ FFXIV people seem to like that as well.
Others have said ESO...think those 3 are the ones most people like nowadays, other than original classic WOW. https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/
That is about all that i can offer that i think may be worth the time. And think all of them have free trials in some form or fashion.
How can you recommend a game you don't like? ESO was terrible. The combat and animations are bad and you spend about 80% of your time running around aimlessly. The zones all feel the same. It's nothing like what a ES game should be. If they would have made it Skyrim Online it would have been the greatest game ever. Instead we got a poor man's WoW.
Recently went F2p, but until you hit high level there's nothing to buy anyway.
Has PvE, PvP and a fairly active community with Convoy runs, pirating and major Sunday Pvp battles.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
Imo ESO has one of the best combat systems among mmos. The active dodging, blocking, sprinting, and heavy/light attack mechanics give me a sense of freedom and control over my character rarely if ever felt in other mmos.
I agree with you that it doesn't play much like Skyrim, but I judge it against other mmos not against one of the greatest single player rpgs ever made. When I want the Skyrim experience I play Skyrim, when I want to play an awesome mmo I play ESO.
Popular games include:
ESO
Black desert online
Gw2
Archeage unchained
WoW retail and classic
SWG private servers
Tera
Phantasy star online 2
EVE
LOTRO
DDO
Neverwinter
Take a look at all those with your research and determine what you will most likely succeed with. Or you can put a list of your deal breakers and then people will tell you which mmos have what

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Project Gorgon has an interesting system and made by indy team with a lot of good (albeit small) community involvement.
If you left MMOs 5 years ago, you really haven't missed much however, just a lot of crowd funding flops.
I downloaded FF14, PS02, TESO, GW2, BDO and Lotro. Maybe one will stick.
Kind of weird that the popular mmo lists you guys posts havent really changed much in the last 5-10 years...

If need fire/crafting support - feel free to come to Laurelin (just be sure to have Lotr appropriate name).

We've got a number of try-hard Indies who seem locked in near endless development cycles due in part to a lack of stable funding combined with little accountability.
Might not be much different in 2025 either, but hope springs eternal.
