Well, lets be accurate here.  In order to play in the beta for I believe a month, all you had to do was sign up.  100% free.   If you bought any package (cheapest is now $50 I think) you would have had access to the game for the last 5 years or so...

Here is the beta signup page for your free account...
    https://crowfall.com/en-US/register?t=sign_up&p=nav

I'm not defending the game (I can't get my group to even consider playing it right now as we are obsessed with Return of Reckoning for the last few months), but facts actually matter, and anyone who signed up for the beta test can actually get in to the beta for free.

Fair enough, but MMOs are now orientated to bringing in players far too early, into uncompleted games. Once there you are tempted to start putting cash over. Your argument it is free is the same argument we hear about F2P games. So factually correct, much like walking into a casino with a ticket to play some fruit machines would be "free".
Not sure how this is any different from any other "open beta" that has happened for decades?  They serve two purposes.  The first is to stress the servers and the second is to market the game...

And like it or not, this game is not really "uncompleted".  It is very close to release and I expect that once they roll through all the testers that a release date is announced for this year.  What remains is really just performance tweaks and maybe some tweaks to crafting/combat... but we are talking tweaks and not full system replacement.   What we see now is 95% what we will get at release.

It is not a matter of "like it or not", if the game launches this year (not some form of early access) I will applaud it as KS MMO's need a good launch. One final point, I hope we see a wipe just before launch, but as the concept of a fair playing field has been lost to the £$'s that may be just wishful thinking.
Of course there will be a wipe.  There may be multiple, but there will definitely be one before launch. They have clearly said so and there is no reason not to.

Note that I did not in any way, shape or form claim that it will be good if it launches this year.  Just that they will launch.   I think it COULD be good, but it could also fall flat on it's face.

Well the wipe is at least a good sign, if this one is not a success it may be game over for KS MMO's. After CoE I think player worries may have been behind all the sudden announcements about alpha's and beta's we had this summer. So fingers crossed, it is about time there was something to challenge Darkfall, which I note is still very highly scored on here.

Does not stand for a point nor a fact.

I know there probably isn't that much known yet about how much of leap forward the beta will be, but do you guys think that $50 is reasonable to get a taste of playing the game at this point?  I'm usually not willing to buy into early access, but this looks like it will probably release relatively soon.  Well, relative to all the other MMOs like it.

And my advice as it were, would be to get in now, join a guild, and start to build that network for when shit gets real in Beta.
Just want to note that there is no way to join a guild in game.
and yet.. I am in one, and we even have a guild chat..Apparently, I am doing what can't be done.

It is now mid-September, with less than three months until the end of the year I cannot see how they could possibly launch the game this year.

At the very least they will have to fix the UI and optimize the game further. Considering how long it took to make the first part of an extremely basic new player experience I have serious doubts whether they can pull off anything complicated in less than three months.

Mind you, there are also other glaring holes in the game and game framework, like the lack of any in-game guild/friends/community functionality, the useless map, a seemingly broken crafting/trading loop, a lack of overall coherence, the overly ambitious scope, etc, etc.

It is further down the track than other crowdfunded mmos, but I would describe it as in an alpha state compared to say New World.

I think what you describe is what you think they should do, not what they HAVE to do.  I agree that it would be great to have most of that done, I would even add Eternal Kingdom functionality to your list, but my expectation is that once they cycle through the free beta invites they announce a launch date and it will be this year.

There is no functionality within the game to set up, join, or manage a guild, or any other type of community (friends list, etc).

To make a guild you have to buy an item from the Artcraft online store, then you create the guild outside the game on the CF forums. Similarly, you can only join a guild from outside the game.

Yeah, from the perspective of are the bare bones of a game in place I guess they can release, but usually a released game also has a degree of polish. Maybe they can get away with it as a small indie game.

As a new player it feels fairly disjointed, but I have seen some streamers play dregs campaigns where you can see how the game's systems come together nicely.

I agree.  I think a large part of the issue is that the core players who have been playing/testing this game for 5 (or whatever) years are the ones focused on the Dregs.   Not all of them, but a huge majority.  I will likely be playing the faction campaigns.  Guess we will see in a few months.

I just got into the beta (for free...) and my first impression after a couple of hours is:

    - The engine is VERY badly optimized. The graphics in no way justify the poor framerates I'm getting with my quite badass PC.
    - Quite boring gameplay. Another clone without real innovation.
    - It's not a MMORPG.

New World is a much better game than this with both games in their actual state.

See I can get the part about the optimization even though when I last played it was OK (not great) on a 1060.   I can get not liking it.  But calling it a clone?  What exactly is it a clone of?  What game allows you to have characters visit various unique worlds with their own rulesets, and attempt to conquer it?

I think it’s potential problem is that it is NOT a clone and kind of sits in this weird space between MMORPG, games like Chivalry, and games like Planetside.

I got invited for free but never bothered to DL. So definitely not worth $50 for me apparently :)

I would never pay $50 for a beta...This is where the industry has gone drastically wrong, and we the players have enabled it. As long as gamers are willing to pay money for alphas and betas, we are going to get this. Players need to put their foot down and say we aren't paying for jack until we have a finished product that has been released.

Wasn't this studio developing their own engine, receiving investment money to build and market it even?

If so I think someone may have been sold a bill of goods.

No they are using Unity, it is CU that is making their own engine.

I bought it a couple of months ago and it was worth it to me. Whether the game is actually worth playing or you like it is another matter.

Its severely lacking in the polish department - for example I had to search the internet to find out how to leave a group, and when I found the /commands page it was obscured by the icons of the group I was in.

However, it has just implemented a tutorial for new players which is awesome. It will quickly get you to level 18 and introduce you to some of the key parts of the game. There aren't really any good/comprehensive guides for the game out yet so this was a godsend.

By the way, the game is currently packed with players so that is another plus for playing now I suppose. I haven't gotten to the pvp part yet, but it looks pretty good when I watch streamers. The crafting is quite indepth and interesting, but again I have only just touched the surface.

It seems to be a very group focused game though, so if you don't like playing in groups/guilds it might not be the right game.
    Can I skip the tutorial?

I pledged for this game a while ago, and when it finally got my invite a few weeks ago, I was just amazed at how poorly optimized the game engine was, with graphics that seemed like the original Everquest. I thought maybe the framerate would get better if I played further into the game, but once entering a populated area, the stuttering and even unexplained flickering was enough to put me off to ever trying this game again. After this much development time, with this poor an engine, it's just considered a write off for me and another loss in the world of crowdfunding.

Is it worth $50 to Beta...how much you think they would have to pay me to D/l it then delete it?

I am thinking at bare minimum $500 to get me to d/l it,likely still not enough.

I would be really curious as to this guys mindset when he decided to make a game.

Nobody ever asks the serious real deal questions, interviews are nothing more than advertising BS.

I would ak him if he actually thought he could create a AAA game or he knew he couldn't but just made this to earn a living?
Then what kind of gamer did he think would want to play this?I get the feeling his mindset was that he figured way back when the idea was fresh that he would be one of the first to have large scale pvp battles.

Now that Amazon's pvp game has entered the market, there is very little chance Crowfall succeeds. Then we have 2077 coming out and once the new consoles come out al lthose gamer's will be buying tons of new games to play,CF will be left out in the cold with nobody playing.

Well, they have created their own MMO creation tool called Artisan Engine which is what I had remembered.

Yes, but its the fastest way to level and gives you lots of free stuff (mount, money, etc) so its worth doing.

Btw, I don't know what the population is like anymore because I haven't played it since before the Newworld beta.
