Remasters and Refreshes are all the rage in the games industry. Classic games throughout the last console generation have been given remasters or simple a refresh, modernizing the visuals and sometimes gameplay of older games to make them shiny and new in a different time. But MMOs typically don't see this - but what if they could?

    DAoC before they changed the open world map. Im already getting Pantheon so I will pass on EQ1 remastered because who would be doing that, Daybreak! lol

    Asheron's Call.
    Why? Storyline and content mastery, horribly dated graphics and of course.. its gone now.
    Warner Bro's locking things up.. with I.P. rights.. and just their general garbage decision process makes me mad.
    City of Heroes.
    Why? Fun. But again.. pressures and rights and garbage got in the way from the start.
    Greed ends up getting in the way of all the good ones, as with most things in life. Idiots couldnt even keep Marvel Online going.. just ridiculous.
    Ive been coming to this site, since the beginning. So you can tell along with my choices first off Im not into what passes for an MMO nowadays. I ground my way up with Ultima Online through the red years and since. I despised EQ, and clones like it, WoW, the upcoming Ashes of Creation, I played an mmo where I was a dragon.. plagued by the worst name in the business, besides Lord British, enjoyed a long play with Anarchy Online. *shrug*
    But for me, it all comes down to some meaningful content tailoring to individuals, and the pressures now are all about none of that, as well as needing Hordes of people to accomplish things in a game. Just despicable. But.. whatever.

    I'd much rather play new games with new ideas and new systems than any remaster or any franchise sequel for that matter. I think it's pathetic how the industry these days is so risk adverse, just like Hollywood, and will rather recycle and milk the games and IPs that are proven commodities for a quick buck rather than take a risk on something brand new.

    That way lies stagnation.

    EQ2, however not sure i'd go back as wow has really grown on me. EQ2 has so much zoning all the time, where in classic and retail hardly ever, makes it feel like a world.

    EverQuest, hands down. Redo all the original zones, cities, and mobs and call it EverQuest Remastered.

    I have to agree with the Iselin too, if someone would just listen to the amazing ideas from the players, we could have some incredible Genre mashing deep gameplay MMO's, but they never do. In recent exasperation I threw some awesome ideas at Ashes of Creation, but... Ive seen many pre-developed games and what they turned into as well... And that game is doomed to repeat the same failures as so many others. And not even spectacularly fail, just.. sort of .. quietly off in a corner fail. It is particularly poignant a discouragement when you take in mind an individual has paid for its construction, and obviously wants certain things their way, period.

    Never been into the remake or remaster sense.. I would much rather play a new game, environment, new experiences. Would be great to see a new Everquest game for the series.

    Guild Wars: Ascended

    Take the original CRPG.

    Remaster it.

    Add in 1 Marvel Heroes/Destiny style patrol zone for each region of the world (Ascalon, Kryta, Shiverpeaks, Maguuma, Crystal Desert, Ring of Fire, Shing Jea, Cantha, Echovald Forest, Jade Sea, Istan, Kourna, Vabbi, Realm of Torment, etc).

    Put a live balance team and a live content team on it.

    Make it free to play.

    Allow players to align their guilds not only with Kurzicks & Luxons, but also Sunspears, Shining Blade, Ascalonian Knights, Ebon Vanguard, etc.

    SWG for me, based on Raph's original designs, set in the same point of the canon, with his Jedi permadeath 2nd slot (repeatable, with the goal of being killed by Vader as a mark of distinction).

    The systems would be different enough from the norm as to be a breath of fresh air. The extra hinted-at profs would be incredible.

    Remastering is a horrific idea.  I've already seen the ideas and systems presented in the original, and remastering to improve graphics generally doesn't add anything new to the mix.

    I'd rather see that energy put into new games that implement new and innovative ideas that challenge the concept of 'what an MMORPG is'.  That's the way a stodgy, old field evolves, doing something new and exciting rather than recycling old ideas with fresh paint.

    The problem is, what company has the talent and commitment to do something truly different than the old formulas?

    Iselin +1. Remakes/remasters are cheap, risk-free double dipping. No games need that, imo. At least no active games.


    Apparently there's some sort of agreement on it, since a lot of mentions above are for revivals instead of remaster, which could be a different, but also a more viable topic.
    And for that question, I'd simply cite myself from a similar earlier thread: Auto Assault.

    You could even call it a remaster and update the gfx if it helps on the sales, but otherwise just the same game with the same mechanics and content. Would be great... and maybe it'd fare better now, in the current MMORPG draught.

    I don't think players necessarily have great ideas. They are just restating the game in their head which may or may not be viable.

    MMORPG's are supposed to be long term games so of course they would require a facelift. Having said that, since they also lose people over time there might not be enough money to properly do that and get some return.
