There are tons of great stories in games. I don't get where the cynnicism comes from. I have to imagine that these people are only looking at the EA, Activision, and Ubisoft products and imagining that the whole industry is like them.
Sony has been pushing story centric games for years, and doing a great job of it.
JRPGs are still incredibly story dense experiences. Pick up Persona 5. Pick up NieR Automata and replay it multiple times for the full story.
You want a good story? Pick up Trails in the Sky and experience a narrative and world built up over hundreds of hours and 10 games (and counting). You're welcome.
Yes. The Story in Marvel's Avengers is good. Based on the story itself, the game should have done well. The problem is not necessarily the lack of end game content in the game, but the complete lack of direction for end game.
The game has problems, but judging from the comments in this thread, most people can't place what the problems are. They just hear the playerbase is dwindling and automatically think the game is bad.
It's really not.
It's a good game. It's worth a box purchase price. Most of the issues blocking people from playing or progressing, or even matchmaking, have been fixed.
But the game suffers from very poor loot tables and rewards, and very poor end game direction.
Loot Tables: The end game exotics are crappy. They are parts of sets, most of them are not the most ideal. Mega hive all but guarantees you get an exotic, but, even if you get high enough rolls to make a difference, the stats are all locked, so if you aren't looking for a specific exotic piece, with those exact stats (and barely anyone is because most people don't stack proficiency for good reason) then they aren't useful.
End Game: The issue for multiplayer isn't that you can't find players these days, necessarily, it's that there's no reason to group for end game because those high end missions that drop exotics, (which again, aren't really worth it) are all single player missions. Forget that those missions are repetitive, and over 40 levels of rehashed enemies... because in all honesty, what MOG or MMO doesn't have rehashed enemies - the problem is that, for an end game MOG, there's NO M in the OG.
The problem is, also, that the game isn't going to magically recover with new content. This game is going to have to build over a long time. They squandered their window of when they could have built a solid recurring fanbase with poor direction. This game had probably the most ridiculous PR I've ever seen, with all the deals with intel, gum places, verizon.. etc. they just couldn't deliver because their direction was so shortsighted. With Cyberpunk releasing soon.... they can't be serious that they'll get players back anytime soon.
Good glad the game is failing. I was hyped for this game and as a PC player I was told I would get an inferior product for the same money as others are paying for a superior product. Since I wasn't going to get Spiderman on my platform of choice, they didn't get my money and never will. The fact that the "game" is utter shit other than graphics and is failing at every possible metric makes me smile. Any company that will pull this shit I'm glad to see fail. Add to this any company that is a AAA company with lots of money, effectively charging for an early release with minimal content and maximum bugs, I wish to fail even more. So this makes me warm and fuzzy on the inside its doing this terribly and hopefully it costs all companies involved lots of money.

I should have been clearer, this is not the sort of game I would have expected good story from and as it was rushed out so even more unlikely. Supers can have great story but I just never got that vibe of this game.
I'm genuinely more excited for Gotham Knights. Nightwing is my favorite superhero (other than Gambit).
Marvel's Avengers is too busy wasting everyone's time with Kate Bishop and She Hulk to add Gambit before it dies. And let's be real. At the rate it's going, it'll be dead before it even adds the full list of leaked characters - let alone characters like Wolverine, Daredevil, Deadpool, and Star Lord that could actually bring those player numbers up.
The only upside is that when they do add the exclusive Spiderman, no one will still be around to care.

The team behind it is very good at single player storytelling. It's the GAAS that they are noobs at.

Why didn't they go with the top attractions first then added the others later. That would have made more sense no ?

In fairness, Black Panther was very clearly going to be the first addition, but he was delayed out of respect for the passing of Chadwick Bosman.
The result however is that the life of this game now hinges on Hawkeye and Diet Hawkeye.
Did the beta because of steam. The usual politics forced storyline, thus a fail, and the rest I had fun with for.. 18 hours. As the Hulk. Tried Iron man, wow were those controls glitchy bad. But buy it? lol.. no. They said wait wait.. 24 hours in, saying yes we have 74 more maps and far reaching story coming with the acutal launch dont worry...
But since launch ALL I HEAR is there is no big world, no players to team with, and just like the short play I had.. not even meaningful development with "gear" for different playstyles, or a feeling of accomplishment.
Seems like the fans have spoken. Finish the game, stop pushing the same nonsense driving people away from this franchise, and DC. It is worse in interest levels than zombies theme, and that is really amazing when you think about it.
Maybe stay off the "popular" fake reality train, and just stick with more content. How anyone can fail with those amazing back stories to hold or draw in people with new content.. is just tragic.

These are the returns, of all your choices"

Players only love you when they're playing
Say women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
You'll know
You will know
Oh, oh, oh you'll know" -Fleetwood Mac, Dreams.
