The Test Computer

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630
Years ago, Brad posted or blogged or whatever that he kept a certain computer always running the latest Pantheon build. His purpose was to ensure that the game would never need a more powerful computer than that one.

I have sort of been counting on that, because my wife isn't going to be on board for me to buy a new rig just to game.

But sadly, Brad is gone. And time is passing.

I visualize that designated computer in a landfill somewhere.

You think VR kept up this protocol, or no? Is this going to be Vanguard, where the game pushes the tech and boxes many folks out, or WoW, where most computers will run it?

Very good question.  I'm not sure I have an answer, though.

I expect the basic client will not tax any computer processor very much at all.  Memory and graphics, I'm less sure.  This game could need 32 Gb of memory to operate well, or it could function with a bare minimum of 8 Gb.  It all depends on how it's coded.  Same is true for a video card.  I worry about needing an SSD drive, though.

I hope this 2014 machine I have will be okay, because I am not upgrading to play any game again.

It shouldn't need too much from the computer because it doesn't look good and it isn't about large-scale engagements either.

It's always possible to build the game badly so that it requires a supercomputer to run, but as long as they don't do bad job on it it shouldn't require much from computer.

You should assume it needs a bit more than WoW because the dev team doesn't have the kind of resources to put into optimized code that Blizzard does, but the system requirements shouldn't be steep.

If it was launching this year I'd say you might of had a shot, but by the time Pantheon comes out your machine will very likely be nearing the 10 yr mark which just isn't realistic for gaming on any platform.

I think the last time we got an official recommendation for specs was 2014. That's was long before VR did a graphical overhaul. My guess we won't see the game for some time, sure hope you have a system that can play it.

I don't foresee Pantheon launching before the end of 2022. So you're looking at least an 8+ year old rig by the time it launches. I imagine you'll have to upgrade something to place this game.

I do remember VR saying something like this. A common mid range computer should be able to run Pantheon well but again that was some time ago. My guess is by the time Pantheon gets to the end of Alpha's. We should get word on min specs. At this point we have no ideas how many stages Alpha will have. Personally I think when we get to Beta, a mid range PC from that time would run the game.

So, 2070 SuperMax, 32GB ram, 1 TB SSD should be " mid-range" by then, amirite?

    ;)

By then we will have Petaflop GPU's on the low end.

Probably true.  I guess I could plan a premature death to avoid a machine upgrade.  That'll teach 'em!

So this is was the machine & settings Brad McQuaid was running the game circa 2017~ish: "i5 with a GTX 970 and holding a steady 60 FPS on mid-high settings". Just an FYI for everyone. Sadly his wife passed away a few months after he did, so maybe his only surviving kin that I know of, his daughter, has it in her possession. Who knows what has become of it. Just an FYI for everyone regarding the machine's specs & what may have to become of it.

SSD drives are pretty cheap, you should get one regardless of Patheon... just for your sanity.

Start a crowdfund...  I'll throw a few bucks in. :D

Keep your outer box, and upgrade the guts.   ;)

    If that doesn't work:

     - "spill" something on your computer.

    My favorite:

Let her use your computer to surf the internet, then claim she downloaded a virus that fried it.

Or throttle your internet on your PC so she thinks your way worse off then she thinks. After she spends time buffering cooking shows, you may get greenlit for a new PC. (wink)

It't not that I can't buy it. But if I buy unilaterally, I waive my objections to her unilateral purchases.  It's better for me to wait until my computer is inoperable, or until my lovely wife wants something comparably expensive.

I got you covered.  Tell her it's time to switch to reusable cloth tampons (it's a thing).  Over the course of years it will save the family $X.  She says no, you say disposables are a luxury and you're splurging too!

I use the suggest what I want many months before I want it approach but I aim high. Like I started talking about the new GTX 3080 and what it does till she asked the price and let her shoot me down hard. Wait a several weeks till the 2060 super price dropped let her win be my win and got the card I need over what I would want. If you let my wife know I will delete this post and call you a lier lol
