Although I find the whole pricing debacle exaggerated and nonsense, performance and bug wise LotRO still hasn’t been fixed. Several people in my Kinship did indeed not get the xpack, this on top of the Kinship
bug, chat disappearing, login problems and rubberbanding. I wonder when it will be fixed, if it happens at all. Its been quite a few weeks already.

These server issues have been going on for years now. Especially for us European players it's even worse, ever since they moved the EU servers to the US.

It will never be fixed, since they clearly don't have the capacity/competence in-house anymore.

Hmmm interesting to read things like this. My wife plays pretty much everyday and has for a long long time. Other than the recent server issues she has had no problems to speak of.

I have been on EU servers since Beta, the issues they are having now are really something different. I agree about the fixing though, I am not really optimistic.

Same, with recent issues I am talking about the last month or two. I am in a huge kinship, every single day one of our members is having issues. We have a running joke about our kinship chest, will the items load properly today or is it “empty” again. All of this is on EU servers though.

While I do agree that the whole butthurt about fiscal system they have is nonsense.

The fact that this game is a buggy mess, with problems that have persisted for so long they are game features, and running gag jokes, and this for both LOTRO and DDO, is rather amazing that it is still limping along.

Truth be told, it's gotten worse for DDO over the years, a lot worse. If it was this bad when I started, I never would have played, the thing is, it creeps up on you, slowly, and you find yourself accepting things like the game crashing, purchases not happening, chat not loading, sound failing, getting stuck in the geometry, server instabilities, rollbacks,  etc, etc, etc... and we all know that the main reason we put up with it, is because we have years invested into the game.

Pity, there is really nothing that has come out that can take over the mantle. of these games.

I will bet, the Amazon game will be a hollow shell of a game in comparison to LOTRO, just like Neverwinter was little more than a re-skinned asian grinder, and paled ridiculoysly to DDO.

I agree. Over the years I've tried getting into both LOTRO and DDO and there was absolute no problem. Absolutely nothing! It may be because I never played for more than a few hours and then uninstalled after a day or two, but I just don't recall any issues.

I don't know when LOTRO stopped having EU servers, but I tried playing it this March when everything became free and I played for almost 12 hours every day. I managed to experience the issues with LOTRO at their fullest. After a week of heavy playing and reaching level 30, I could not take this torture any longer and stopped for a few days/week and tried to come back, but after killing 1-2 mobs I remembered why I took a break, then I uninstalled, after 1-2 months around May-June I tried to play again, but was met with the same issues and uninstalled yet again. I came back in August to claim some free content and again after killing 1-2 mobs I uninstalled never to return.

It's just that the servers are so laggy - the base combat is also laggy, but when the servers lag too, it's a real pain to try and fight with the game and try to have any enjoyment. My biggest enjoyment was in Vanilla WoW while leveling - the combat feels so fluid and snappy in there, it's just a pleasure to execute your abilities and rotations, because you have full control of the situation, but in LOTRO it feels like RNG.

I think LOTRO won't last long unless some serious work is done on the issues with the game and that doesn't look like it's happening either.

I totally agree, they have a good base for a game, with features that other MMO's have not come anywhere near to touching upon, and they do it well. But, they need to do something to stabilize their game.

It feels like at any moment, the hamsters are going to quit and the game will just crash and burn.

You also have to wonder how much their 'lifetime' memberships are compounding the situation.  That's monthly revenue that could be used to fix things, or more likely, keep the doors open.

This is my guess as well. They've moved datacenters and changed server infrastructures a few times over the years, and none of it has really helped. I imagine that after all the updates the two games have seen over the years the engine's networking code is just incapable of handling the modern loads.

The engine is old, these issues are going to keep cropping up and won't ever be really be fixed. Slap a band-aid on it and put out another Xpac.
"Modern Loads" would require that there are more people playing today than playing when they first made the game, which, I highly doubt.

While LotRO, has held its own, I don't think it's popularity has every truly soared over the years, perhaps a ways back when they launched F2P, they took an uptick, and I wager they do have a slow influx of new players, or at least people trying the game due to hearing about Amazon's planned MMO, so they googled Lord of the Rings MMO's and LOTRO, came up, so they gave it a try.

But I don't think there is anything truly new, or Modern, or unpredicted happening with their population growth.

If I were to wager a guess, I would say, that the high turnover of developers and, by their own admission, lack of previous developers leaving notes on what some code does, is the problem.

However, and get this, this is what will blow your mind. in DDO, their test server, called Lammy, is far more stable than their live servers, and some of the things that were working fine on Lammy, that players could use and test and play with, suddenly beak or don't work on the live game at all.

So they have to fix the code to import to the live game, and.. not fix it on their test server.

Which tells me that they have two variants of the game and two systems of code they are working with, The Test Game, and the Live Game.

I more meant the stress that years and years of half-baked systems stacked on top of each other has put on the old, broken engine.

The game has always felt like the code was just hacked together with brute force. Just look at the mounted combat...
yah.. Ok.. we can agree there.
