Is a basic notebook enough? The more functionality you want from it, the more it makes sense to buy a high end gaming PC one. Is the screen giving you 4k for videos for example? The beauty of the PC is the same as the beauty of the mobile it is an all in one, less devices needed.

You have intrigued me about older, low cost console games, how are these purchased and what what sort of length of time do you have to wait?

Which gets written taking the lowest common denominator into account. And that is why I hate the release of the "crippled" Xbox S. It's bound to have a negative influence on games development IMO.

A PC is a machine used by a gamer to excel in their craft... master games.
A console will always be a toy for wannabes.
Consoles are great machines that work out of the box. Though PC's have the potential for more power so they can really render extremely beautiful scenes for game play.
But in the end, especially with the new machines, they are good and easy to use.
Easy to use is always better in my opinion. I like the idea of popping in the disk and going. PC's are easy to use until I'm wondering why I'm getting an error message.
They don't have the versatility as far as modding but I do think dollar for dollar I'd much rather pay 500 ish dollars and just buy games and not worry about upgrading until the next console series.

I'm not so sure about that. Is the difference only in graphic performance? If so.. 1k vs 4k isn't going to effect development too much imho.

It necessitates that one of the big next gen features - ray tracing - have a toggle feature because the Series S can't support it.
I have found a way to have the best of both worlds. Good gaming PC + A Nvidia Shield to stream games to my living room TV from my PC. I also love all the sites you can get deals for games.
Also with the shield I can (with work arounds) use any gaming streaming service. I am not buying a console this time around, even though I know I am missing out on console exclusives but I have so many games to play, I dont care.

Ray tracing is eye candy and pretty cool. I would think game development is not centered around it.
In any event I believe that the only thing that slows down game development beyond our evolution of capabilities is peoples tastes.

1440P vs. 4K is just the marketing product placement but the differences in the 2 models go way beyond that with less (10 vs. 16 GB) and slower ram, slower CPU and GPU, etc.
Sony's approach for their "lesser" PS5 is the correct one IMO - everything is identical except the disc drive.
MS spin is that everything will play just as well and with the same frame rates on the S and X with the only difference being one does it in 4K and the other at 1440P. We'll see how that turns out in reality but I wouldn't bank on that being the case.

Im not sure how they are doing 1440p in TV's that are native 4k. From what I understand people who have tried to use 4k TV to run 1440p on a PC it does not look good.

I'm not saying that there aren't performance differences. I'm saying the that the Xbox Series S is not impeding game development. If we think about it, its moving it forward. By the time that developers learn and incorporate all these new cool features into their products, the run of the mill devices will be able to run it.

Exactly.

The X will run well in both of those but the S will struggle running in 4K if you want to use the TV in its native resolution. The S can do 4K, just obviously not as well as the more capable X. If you try to run it at 1440P and just rely on the TV's own upscaling to display that on a 4K monitor that wouldn't look very good.
Once again, the PS5 did it right: either edition is just as capable.

Given that you can buy neither a new current generation Console or GPU right now without an extreme amount of luck (or markup)... I'd say this is a trick question.
That said, I'm in the multiplatform category myself. I have no problem purchasing a console if there's an exclusive I want to play there, and some types of games I prefer to play on PC, and others on a console.
I would say - games are more plentiful and tend to be less expensive on the PC, but the hardware to run them is also much more expensive, requires more frequent updates, and has a lot more headaches (driver updates, malware issues, random Microsoft errata, etc)
So I say - best tool for the job, and that depends on the game for me.
I can see many of the arguments here being valid, but dependent upon the value you place on something specific. As an example for me, I read about the pc rendering beautiful graphics and this is certainly true, no argument from me. However, to me, graphics are great but not the end all, be all. I am perfectly content using a TV as my computer monitor and suffering some of the crispness of the graphics for a larger screen. I play pc games on a 50 inch tv and thus far I love the experience. I also know what I like is not what others may like. I also own a ps4 and rather than worry about which is better, I only care, admittedly selfishly, about the game experience for me. Ultimately, I am happy I have the ability to experience both options and I think many gamers game on a pc and one or more other devices such as a console, phone, ipad ect as a good game on any system is simply a good game.

There are many people happy with 1080p gaming and using last gen consoles/pc's to get that. Great savings and still lots of games at a cheaper price. Looks good to me =-)
All these talks are kind of like asking people which food tastes better.
It all depends on what you like so the question is meaningless.
Both, consoles and PC, are moving towards a place where you can play most games on either type and that will likely continue to grow.
Way i see it is that if you just like gaming a console is fine. But if you want to surf and do other stuff, say streaming or the like, you are going to need a PC.
What your needs are, other than gaming, is the main point.
A PC is a machine used by a gamer to excel in their craft... master games.
A console will always be a toy for wannabes.

They're great until you actually have to have control, console controllers are a joke compared to pc tools of the trade kb/m
I have a console so don't take what i say above to heart, just joking... mostly
I'm serious about the control though, i've tried to play Warframe on xbox, just "HOW?" is all i think, how can anyone on this planet think that's even remotely acceptable compared to a kb/m
Again with GTA5 played it a lot on the console, when it was released for PC, i mean come on never looked back there's no comparison, PC is easily a trillion times superior.
Again with Red Dead, mainly my son played it but ofc i test drove it here and there and was like... "i'm totally waiting for the PC version" there is now f'ing way i'm not going to subject myself to this torture lol , and yeah when it came to the PC was a Hell Yeah omg this is so much better, but uggggg just not in to sp games atm or for a bit actually.
It depends on the genre. For shooters, MMOs, and isometric genres, keyboard and mouse can't be beat. For action games and regular RPGs, a controller is probably going to be better and more comfortable.

But consoles can use mouse and keyboards now and PC's have controllers. Now I am confused =-) Lines are getting blurry. For me PC still wins because it just has more options. I like my toys to have options. Thats why for Phones its Android over Apple. For tablets its Windows over anything else.
My PC is for games and its a media server and a games server. Consoles just cant do that.

I completely agree about the controls, they are abyssmal. Still, there are people who use them like they are 2nd nature.
I have to constantly practice and even then I have problems with them being as exact as I want.

More realistic than anything. If it were cut and dry, people wouldn't still be arguing it after all these years.
A slanted perspective is expected here though, given that this is a MMO website.

Even if you're not wanting a "basic" notebook, the price you pay reflects the parts you get. My wife has a $1000 Chromebook and wouldn't want anything else. That $1000 goes into premium construction that you wouldn't get from a $1000 gaming laptop. Those laptops cost in excess of $2500 and would never be as thin and light.
