I think boils down to two demographics.

You have: The MMO/PC gamers that throw tantrums about spending money, calling every way a company tries to earn a buck a scam and swears never to spend another red cent on the game, and continues to demand how they should get a massive complete world to explore and play in, with rich progress and lore, and tons of other crap for free.

On the other camp you have the Mobile Gamer: Who while sitting on the loo, screwing around in their shallow mindless game sees they can get some goodies for 2.99 and pressed Buy without too much thought.

Kinda easy to see why the market moved.
You can not compare a mobile game that cost nothing or close to nothing to buy and a mmo/pc game that cost 50 to 80 dollars. No one expects nothing for free but we do expect a finished and complete game when charging full game price. Look at the recently released assassin's creed valhalla. 60$ for the game then they added a cash shop.

They atleast added another way to get that items for free but most games don't do that. That said you could finish the game 12 times and still not get everything you could get from the store.

This always go back to the original mmo players who screamed they didn't want to pay a monthly fee and welcomed cash shops. Once companies realized cash shops were much more lucrative it began popping up everywhere. Now they nickle and dime ya every chance they get.

Interestingly enough my wife's friend invited her to play a mobile game she enjoys. Both are in their 60s and not at all would be what most describe as "gamers"

My wife mostly solos on it, or occasionaly joins a pick up team, but her friend plays it on a more competitive level, being the member of a ranked team.

Also, my wife's friend spends money to play while fortunately my wife is not interested in doing.

Was strange to hear her friend describe the challenges of running a ranked team, not unlike what is often discussed here in terms of expected time commitments, being available for both practice sessions as well as formal competitive events.

She spoke about how they would kick people from the team who were unreliable, or even just because they weren't good enough.

I noted my wife wasn't on her friend's team and they both told me my wife isn't ready (skilled) enough yet though her friend often asks how much she's been playing when we get together at our weekly church or dinners outings.

Looks as if their game has its own text system as I've seen my wife chatting with her team mates or even respond to offers for a match on it.

My wife doesn't do social media at all so I'm sure she's using the game's chat to do all of this.

I think there may be many gamers out there who play mobile and don't know they are gamers. They game in a way that follows on from their normal use of playing a mobile, but can they be torn away from it to get a PC or console?

Actually you may not want that to happen, quality time in FO76 won't seem the same when you are asked to take the garbage out in game. :)

THey probably see it as just running an app....Also "gamer" is a bad label to some people so they don't want that association.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

"effort"there is NO effort in mobile gaming.it is just a very lucrative business that takes very little effort and why so many go that route, less risk higher potential profits.

Can you just imagine hiring 150 people to build a AAA  game ,invest 5+ years, maybe 200 million and see some mobile game that took a few months, a few people to make earning 100's of millions.
Or simply look at some streamers, all of them are just nobody to me but several make 6 figures a year just making videos.

I don't think you can make a good mobile mmorpg on the cheap. I think they require as much money. Mobiles are very powerful now, so there's no reason not to invest just as much. The difference is they're more casual and are more accessible to more people because it can run on desktop and mobile. Given they're on a mobile, this usually influences how they're played. It results in a simplified control scheme, and also since people are playing casually there's usually far less stringent demands on the player. This is the bigges tradeoff I think in mobile/desktop mmorpgs.

Personally I tried playing a mobile mmorpg for a time. The trouble was  i didn't like the small screen, and moreso I didn't like hte control scheme. I played by touch and this made it difficult to control and also my fingers consumed screen real estate. Desktop is more comfortable for me.

I broke my iphone yesteday. Frankly, i don't really need a big processor and latest tech on my phone.  I just use it for the phone, camera, alarm, light and utility apps. Unfortunately the cheapest iphone right now is about $400 (iphone se 2020). Ther'es a compromise with putting so much tech in a phone.

Yes, Ungood has a bad "binary" habit that attempts to make one group look "bad" (in their opinion) and the other "good" (in their opinion). Leaves no room for those in neither camp.

I have to say, Eve Echoes seems to be the best mmorpg adaptation for mobile.  Many of the people playing never played Eve Online.  Kinda crazy, because if you venture into dangerous space... FFA PVP... but there is plenty of PVE in safe and non-safe space (as well as mining and trade).

Black Desert mobile seems to be doing well, but the game literally plays itself.  I know runescape was going with a mobile version, not sure if it launched yet (there was a beta I was going to try earlier this year).

Yes there are communities, I know reddit is popular.

I certainly understand the value of mobile gaming for developers these days.  I've tried many many mobile games over the years and the only real license where I've seen a mobile better than a mmo is Star Trek.  The mobile version is better than the mmo,  much better and in reality  a few of the mobile versions are better than the mmo.

I knew you were going to come back with that, but you know most tablet games are designed for a touch screen interface since that's how the bulk of the market plays on them.

    No I agree
I am just saying there are many games that have been ported from PC still support at least mouse Keyboard and/or controller support.
In fact much more than people think.
Some would be very surprised by the games available on the tablets.
Plus my kid is increasingly drawn to it because she can take her tab with her where ever she goes and can use it for anything she needs. Whether it is using Microsoft Office, playing Runescape or watching Netflix.
She has a case with a built in keyboard and loves it.
Yeah, I understand the appeal, I've has an iPad Air 3 with a great Logitech Keyboard but having to sometimes press the surface regardless frustrates me.

Oh well these times are a changing.

I was reading an article recently that mentioned only 0.1% of mobile games are actually successful. Android alone gets about 6,000 new apps per day, most of which is games. So quite a bit of competition.
