it's making $137 million in revenue with 337 employee. how long do you think it will last?
simple answer? greed, most full 3d world are behind huge pay walls, and freemiums, runescape was more pay for all skills unlocks or just play the free version, sure don't know the last years how it goes.
but if anything if the new people start to "monetize" it "better" you can bet it will not take long to fail.
Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.

"Plutos Sama Holdings is alleging that the sale of Jagex was a money laundering scheme to transfer ill-gotten funds through a legitimate United States business. Not only that but they claim to be the actual legitimate owner of Jagex."

greed, p2w, lack of updates to cheapen the cost and get more profit. That's pretty much the gist of current mmo market. Don't think these type of games require the same amount of work that say, ffxiv, wow or gw2 or w.e. needs. Sure, they have their own style and content, but compared to 3D fully animated objects vs static 1-2-3 movement it pales in comparison in just 1 aspect already, not to mention how much more resources 3D mmorpg requires.
But it was a company that does gaming. This is an investment firm. They care about one thing only; profits.
