My girl and I send memes to each other throughout the day via text message; sometimes its to break the everyday boring cycle of work and sometimes its just to bring a laugh to each other. We are both gamers, although she is a console gamer and I am a pc gamer, we can both appreciate a good gamer related meme. Recently she sent me a meme that basically said,

"You know you're a gamer when you have side games that you play to take a break from your main game."

I laughed. I can totally relate... well... I used to relate. This meme got me thinking about how my gaming has evolved or maybe devolved into what it is today. I remember 2 decades ago I would play EQ. That was my main game, by far. I had side games on console or something, but EQ was most definitely my main game and my high school grades showed it, lol.

Now though, I have no main game. I think my last main game was Warhammer Online or Vanguard, both of which were closed down. I think I have been lost ever since, floating around in the abyss of gaming. I have no main game anymore and I just go around from game to game with no solid intention of doing anything overly productive. Maybe a few days playing WoW, another week playing Destiny 2, maybe another few days playing the Division 2, a few days playing Neverwinter, one day playing Maple Story 2, another few days playing Black Desert, and a few days playing EQ. You get the idea. The list of games that I bounce around to are numerous. I feel lost. Nearly all of my gaming friends have wives and kids now and I find it incredibly difficult to find new gaming friends.

Is anyone else like this? Can anyone else relate? I really want a main game, but I also fear I will forever be lost.

I get what you are saying. I have had many main games over the years.

Currently I am hoping to make Ship of Heroes my main game. Saga of Lucimia would be my secondary game. Pantheon would be my tertiary game.

But I will have to wait a while on all three.

I'd love a main mmo but I'm in the same boat.

I think I'm done with lord of the rings online. was playing through main quest and had to help some farmer or some such thing around minus tirith and thought "I just don't want to."

Have been screwing around with Black Desert and I've even downloaded Elder Scrolls Online to see if I can play it a different way that won't tire me.

Otherwise I've been making my way through solo games I never finished. Finished Vampire the Masquerade and I'm trying to get through Dragon Age Inquisition now.

For multiple reasons including more games,  more platforms, learned behaviors or what have you many play as the OP does, hoppers I call them, bouncing here and there, often playing multiple games at the same time and willing to leave and return regularly.

Not me of course,  I still play only one title at a time so the side game concept is lost on me.

While playing FO76 my friend and I often run into other gamers who will announce they are leaving for a bit to play another game.

We both laugh every time and say "other game, WTF is that?"  :D

One thing has changed, I often would play the same game exclusively for years at a time, but haven't done so since leaving EVE three years ago.

Now 4 to 6 months tops, so I guess in my own way, I'm a hopper too.

    Cheers.

Probably I've said it a few times, but my setup is exactly like that, since... I don't know, even in the MUD years I worked in that MO.
Actually one notch "worse" even, I don't have a main game, I have a main games plural :)
(AoC, LotRO and after TSW's death currently CO and STO used to wrestle for the third spot)

That's how I became a hopper, to avoid burning out of my favourite games, I rotate them every 1-2 months. Because even if you have multiple, the fact remains, a main game takes your gaming time for those 1-2 months.

And besides the current main game of the month, I do what you said, occasionally log in to my "second level" games here and there - except your list with BDO, Destiny, Division, and co. have no place even among my second level games.
Neverwinter is fine though. Maplestory2, well... it has a decent music system :)

I guess I mentioned that particular list of games because I wanted to convey my openness to games and thought it might shed light on the subject. I don't really hinder my gaming preferences. I play games I find entertaining, anything from MapleStory 2 to Destiny 2, which I would claim to be vastly different from each other.

    I may be alone as a Hop-Tester :).
My main game is retail WoW. *ducks various projectiles*
Here's why: Blizzard left the API open and you are free to reconfigure the GUI to practically anything you want assuming that you keep addons updated. I prefer action bars and some data metrics viewable and want to be free to place them anywhere on the screen that I wish. In addition, I'm a left-handed mouser and prefer action bars where I click abilities rather than have keybinds. Personal preference.
So, Hop-testing ... currently dabbling in New World, Bless Unleashed and ESO, none of which are doing anything for me. However, I'll keep looking.
Just my opinion and worth nothing more than that.
