I think they would have better luck trying to make a 3rd Person, Magic the Gathering MMORPG.

I mean, it will need to use the current ruleset of 5e, and truth be told, Neverwinter supposedly used that Ruleset and that game felt as copy-paste generic an MMO as one could get. Just an overall horrible game really, even had gender locked classes, which was deplorable for a D&D setting.

I mean, I wish them luck, but I really think it's going to be a bland shadow of what DDO put on the table, and just yet another painful lackluster game in a long line of video games that tried to capture D&D.

No, Neverwinter actually used 4e, hence the 'Daily powers' and 'encounter abilities' thing. That's not present in D&D 5e

Oh, it was 4e, still a horrible game.

This bit from a few years ago kind of shows the CEO has some skills/ability to make decent games.https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2rvl91/i_am_jeff_pobst_ceo_of_hidden_path_entertainment/ When i saw it was going to be a third person game i immediately was skeptical figuring just another ARPG incoming.

I have no idea why ANYONE would want to copy a DnD set,i would rather devs think for themselves and IMPROVE on faults from past ventures.

DnD ideas were good 20 years ago,imo not good anymore. The best way to design the numbers is with a curved graph. This allows for more diverse formulas.

Also far more important than weapons or armor or simple math formula are the abilities players get to use. That is what defines combat, otherwise every game is basically the same combat.
Anyhow I think they deserve a look when the time comes. There is soem tidbits in there like they typically work with investors,Microsoft for one is an entity i cannot stand.

They might have enough talent to pull off AAA "a big maybe"but if they work with the wrong investor it could be a total disaster but they won't care because it will be funded.

Interesting, i have a passion towards rpg games like DnD, such as pathfinder:kingmaker, pillars of eternity, baldurs gate, neverwinter nights and more... they are such great games for RP letting you build your characters the way you want.
I'm also looking forward to it, hoping for more games (good games) from this genre.

Well Cryptic does have a Magic: The Gathering online Action RPG coming out soon.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

  • NeblessNebless Member RarePosts: 1,871
I'd have to think it would challenge Neverwinter Online if anything, as it sounds to be more that style of game and if they were launching next week they'd probably see a number of players switch over after the most recent brouhaha Cryptic caused in game.

Third person doesn't usually mean ARPG. When they're talking about those they usually call it isometric,

When they say third person they typically mean the standard over the shoulder MMO perspective.

Well if they are announcing now and just starting to look for people then you can expect it in about 8 years or so. I wonder what people really think when they say AAA these days. There really hasn't been a real AAA game released in the MMO sphere in a very long time.

I can only espouse my opinion. I make no claims that my opinion is better (or worse) than anyone's opinion. But, I'll probably pass on this one. I spent just a little time perusing the narrative director's twitter feed. She seems to be anti-European, anti-male, and anti-gender. I have to assume (and it is an assumption) that she will play a significant role in the "narrative" of this game. I'm not interested in yet another woke, neo-liberal rebranding of a classic intellectual property. I could be way off and completely wrong. I actually hope I am. But I doubt it.

I don't believe I have any right to expect game companies to design their games to please me. Nor do I believe I have to purchase their games. I'm sure there is a market for such content. I'm just not within that demographic.

But you interested kids have fun ;)

I thought D&D  was the bland shadow to begin with.

I always dreamed of an open world Forgotten Realms MMO, but I'd happily settle for another great D&D single player CRPG.

    Sad its not an mmorpg.

WHY are they telling us right now?
What does open world mean to this team because it may be completely different from what i call an open world.Example Instances are not open world.

Here is another question of which i know what it typically means and that is WHY would you pay a license adding a ton of cost to your game?

So my first hunch is they are partnering with Hasbro on this venture and that scares me a LOT.
Typically studios use popular brand names just to solidify sales of a mediocre game.

If you can figure out the answer to these questions you'll have a MUCH better idea of where this game is going.
This smells of micro transaction so much i can smell it from Pluto.

Oh btw i noticed mention of MTG as one of the main brands,WOTC failed BADLY in their recent rendition and you can clearly see why with the newest incoming game>>LAZY CHEAP work. There has been VERY mild improvement ideas for card games and neither Blizzard or WOTC did ANYTHING to improve the genre.

I love DnD games, and it has little to do with the rulesets. I like them because I have read so many of the books over the years I feel connected to the worlds the games are set in. Original games have to take the time to explain the world to you while trying to also keep you interested in the main plot. A 40 - 80 hour game just isn't capable of building that kind of historical lore.

I guess the real question is, what world is this game set in? Please be Athas, Dark Sun...

I have nothing against people who read,my long goen mother used to read a hell of a lot. However for me,i always had a problem with vision and getting headaches trying to read so i never did much when coems to books but i read a LOT on the internet anjd watch a lot of science and history stuff.

You should also realize my name and that the game also used the DnD ruleset and i grew up playing DnD games as well as other games using the same rulesets. My point is that i am not some DnD hater i simply like to move with the tiems but i am also not against ANY idea from the past if it is the BEST option and DnD rulesets are NOT the best options.

Feeling a connect to Dnd in the actual universe makes sense bu when outside businesses try to use the brand as a cash grab it is NOT the same thing.
Think of it like this, you like an author who writes the original DnD books,be it maybe Gary Gygax if my memory serves "coorect?yes/no"the name sounds familar to me lol.Ofk now some totally different author just uses the brand but is not Gary Gygax,it is not the same thing...right?

Outside users of popular brands are just cash grabs, they should be creating THEIR own work instead of using a LABEL from someone else.IDK and i am not great at explaining but i THINK yo u catch my drift,if a machine autographs a Lebron James basketball it is NOT th esame as Lebron James actually autographing it.

As much as it is good to see a new RPG announced there are other role playing games, role playing video games, role playing systems, role playing literature, films and TV out there. RPG's just like everything else need diversity to keep them fresh, the pull of the DnD brand does not help that at all.

Have to agree here. Neverwinter sucked due to them using the lame ruleset...the character customization it a real joke compared to DDO. Thats said Neverwinter uses 4e not 5 and I hear 5e is a step up from that sucky 4e though I am not really familiar with it.
