Building a metaverse for their customers just seems oxymoronic. Their games, their customers, their entire approach to building games is anti-social. Why the fuck would they then try to build a social platforms? Its like designing a retirement home for a bunch of retarded teenagers - even if the retirement home is great, those teens aren't gonna be using it .
So, what I expect is more the case, this is just Epic using a bunch of buzzwords to generate excitement.
I think their "metaverse" is just going to be the ability to play and launch all of the Epic games from a single platform, and you will probably have a customisable avatar and username that can be brought into each Epic game.
As to the earlier poster talking about Raph and virtual worlds: Raph already tried this in 2008 with metaplace. That was his attempt to create a Ready Player One type of platform. It didn't really work as intended, for a variety of reasons, but still had some interesting use-cases and was picked up by some unexpected groups of people (e.g. it got used by some universities to create online lecture halls)

It honestly wont work since pretty much everyone is trying to monetize anything they can now. You can honestly find a reaction video to pretty much anything. People could literally post a video of their cat jumping into their lap or meowing and get a million views (dont believe me? just look up any jumping cat videos on youtube and see how many views they average).
All it needs now is its own crypto currency and we are truly next level..... Heard it here first.
/Cheers, Lahnmir
If they wanted to add a cryptocurrency, it would cost $1 trillion, not $1 billion.
You all understand each game with a cash shop converts your $ into their game currency (digital).
They don't necessarily need to use current bitcoin, they can just create a new metaverse currency (which isn't traded and speculated on in trading markets).

I think the idea is that if you attach such currencies which are prone to speculation the game itself will attract a type of clientele that would be akin to hell on earth for most players.

Yes, I get this. But to go straight to this, when the metaverse is still in concept phase is getting ahead of ourselves.
I also see a ton of negativity in this thread for a company putting up big stakes to try something new.
How many threads have we seen made here, over the years, about how MMORPGs need to transform? What about the possibilities with a metaverse?
Done right, this could be a platform for new era of MMORPGs and gaming in general.

That was a good read, thanks. So they are making Playstation Home 2.0

More like Mosaic 2.0.
But now with 1 personal universal ID that will definitively answer the question, was Remsleep really DMKano?

I wonder where all the money came from. The article mentioned 'multiple companies', but I didn't see any details. I may have missed that, though.
One thing no one seems to be bringing up is that the idea of a universal personal internet ID means a much bigger opportunity for moderation and censorship. The idea makes a lot of sense from a userID/password/security issue and could enable lots of interesting things, but the price may be a loss of personal privacy and freedom. With the outburst of censoring against individuals by social media, do we really want to make it easier for the tech companies to coordinate their moderation? I've read far too many SF stories showing the evils of 'thought police' to be overly comfortable with this idea.
It seems a bold move by Epic. It really could do good things for gaming. But this particular cloud may be carrying toxic rain in the guise of its silver lining. It's all going to depend on who is in control of this. Do we really want to concede the earth to Disney/Amazon/Elon Musk?
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

There is a link in the IGN article to the Epic announcement.
This round includes an additional $200M strategic investment from Sony
Group Corporation, which builds on the already close relationship
between the two companies and reinforces their shared mission to advance
the state of the art in technology, entertainment, and
socially-connected online services. Other investment partners include
Appaloosa, Baillie Gifford, Fidelity Management & Research Company
LLC, GIC, funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates,
Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, funds and accounts managed by
BlackRock, Park West, KKR, AllianceBernstein, Altimeter, Franklin
Templeton and Luxor Capital. Epic continues to have only a single class
of common stock outstanding and CEO Tim Sweeney remains the controlling
shareholder of the company.
So, mostly equity and investment firms and Sony who has put in $200M this round and $250M in a previous funding round.
Thanks for that, @Torval. Looks like a lot of companies buying into an idea, not really a consortium of game development companies. Sony's participation *might* be trying to re-energize their consoles or maybe setting up for a future launch.
Anyway, it's looking more and more likely that all games will have to acknowledge Fortnite as the one and true game for all genres. Is it too late to find a new hobby?

Not that fortnight is the game, just that it was the one of the first major games to allow cross platform play... ironically they had to fight Sony on this. This is a big development, so was the tech behind it.
Even after reading some articles I still don't get concretely how it will benefit the users (basically what new features it brings, what problems it solves).

No I think you got it just fine. It's their toy they hope to make even more money from. It's not our toy.
Nevertheless they will dream up "advantages" and try to sell you on it.
One aspect of it already is a kind of VR internet or even just VR sites like Facebook is working on with their Horizons. That will surely appeal to and will be promoted virally by people who enjoy wearing large, heavy contraptions on their head.
When they say "better engagement" and "more attractive and richer environment" what they're actually thinking is cha-ching.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

I doubt it will be just a lobby for access to our favorite games, with avatars... for $1billion in initial investment. So I'll wait and see.

I don't think many in this thread even know what they mean by metaverse. A primer for you:

Kyleran on yours sincerely
'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
