Sheesh all these posts about the OP's gripe being just about sex. It wasn't. It's about the sexualization of children which is very common in anime and eastern MMOs.

It's not about Baywatch nor the prudish hypocrisy of being fine with violence but not fine with sex.

It's about fantasy pedo shit which should be just as messed up for boomers, millenials, Gen Z or whoever.

It's something anime fans turn a blind eye to or rationalize away as just being a cultural thing and for that reason somehow OK.
As I understand it, these characters are supposed to be something like 300+ years old or somesuch.

In short they are just the Eastern/Anime versions of things like Pixies, Sprites, Nymphs, even Halflings and Elves, which are supposed to look eternally young and even childlike, which have been in our art and folklore for eons.

If that was supposed to be an actual underaged child, then I would have a very serious issue with it, but, as I have been informed, they are not, it's fantasy, and they are not even human, they are often very old beings in eternally youthful bodies.

Can someone back me up on this, or correct me if I am wrong.

Japan uses the “Oh, she looks 12 but she’s actually a 2000 year old mage cursed to forever look like a child” trope to claim that technically this wouldn’t be pedophilia.

Well, as I've said before the Japanese, and seemingly a variety of Asian cultures, have an obsession with youth but also "cute."

A Japanese girlfriend of mine explained to me that it is better to be considered "cute" than beautiful. Also that the more rounded wide eyes are part of that looking cute thing.

Youth seems to be intertwined as part of that cuteness.

So for me, a western watcher, it's difficult to differentiate between cute and inappropriate as I don't always know what it is that I'm looking at.

This is not to say that there aren't issues over there. When I asked my girlfriend about the whole "really little children" with short skirts and the whole tentacle thing she just rolled her eyes, shook her head and I took that to me that it was "what it was."

Again, there are issues in Japanese culture that we think of as horrendous and they just "roll their eyes and shake their heads" such as having completely separate rail cars JUST for women. No men allowed.

this is done so that women don't have to put up with being groped.

Maybe part of it is that it's a very male-dominated culture and there is a huge emphasis put on "saving face."

An example that was told to me was this girlfriend went to Japan (she was born here, lived in Japan fro 23 years and then got out) with a martial arts group. One of the teachers who was japanese started ordering her around and telling her to serve this person or serve that person.

One of the American women told her that she should say no and refuse to do this. Her response was "it's ok, really, if I make a fuss then he'll lose face and that would be bad."

So I just take it that there are issues but also subtleties that Western audiences might not understand or take the wrong. Perhaps some people who have lived in Japan or Korea (I've noticed this a bit in Korean culture) might chime in and help clarify.

I'm an old school Geek/Nerd, where I read comic books growing up, and Every Male was this Buff Dude in a speedo and skin tight body suit, and all the Females were wearing, pretty much the same thing, but with more "Skin" color showing.

Love me Comics, I enjoy the current trend with Anime, as to me it is just another art style to enjoy, no different in my book from enjoying the transition from golden age comics to the edgy art of the 90's, the dark noir style, even the massive diversity of art styles in web comics these days.. all of which are something to appreciate the artistic talents of those that make this.

So for me, this is more like witnessing evolution of art styles in action, as opposed to anything negative, I am find is fascinating.

Personally, I rather an MMO have a more cartoonish style to it, that way the graphics can age much better, than trying to be cutting edge realism, I absolutely adore the art of Crowfall for that very reason.

But again, to each their own.

I also loved the old comic books, and yes they wore skimpy outfits and had exaggerated features.

But none of them looked like 10 year old children with massive boobs bursting out.

I know several grown men and women who have told me they were abused when they were children. So my child-porn detectors go off when I see stuff like the ad I complained about.

    Adblocker is working fine though.

I don't think that's really all that bad,  considering mermaids have been written about lore wise for a long time,  with historical sightings for hundreds of years... they say mermaid sightings back then were often confused with sailors seeing manatees... so... saying you saw a beautiful mermaid back then when you actually had a slight attraction to a manatee is..imo far worse than an attractively drawn fish lady.

I lived in Texas for a long time and traveled to Japan, Israel, and all over Europe. I was amazed at how many people thought all Texans were cowboys. They were amazed that Texas has ocean beaches.

Japan certainly did have a lot of the anime art that I find repulsive. But the biggest thing was baseball. 5 channels of 24/7 baseball.

This topic has made me think about this.

When I play Eastern MMO's, the art is one of the things I would say, I took the most to get used to. For example, I really liked the game Black Gold (Till it was Shut down)

One of the races looked like this:

Yes, those are males and females, and as you can see they look more equalized.

    but then you had:

Now the idea is that the males and females in this image are the same race and age, and yet the females are very young looking. When I first asked about this, because this idea of pixie looking dwarves seemed off to me, I was told, that was just the way they did dwarf/fae style races in Asian nations, a very high contrast from the Western style.

So.. maybe because I played games like this, and learned that this is the way they do things, it is just something I have come to respect that this is not some underscore pedophile, just like killing sentient races in fantasy games is not trying to turn me into a psychopath, even if some people still believe it does.

and this was still a very common MMO, with humans that looked like this:

So.. as I said, if anime sprites and the like are going to be something that triggers you, I wager a lot of upcoming Eastern MMO's shouldn't be on your play list.

Just FYI I am American (US version) so ya...

But America is a small part of the whole world. And trust me...American politicians, courts, and churches are not shy about sticking their noses, (and anything else to get attention) into any and all things.

If they have not got their collective noses and other parts out of whack over these things then I do not think they have ever risen to the level of being porn, soft or otherwise.

It is most definitely something that pushes some folks buttons, but to me it is 95% a cultural thing.  It is part of the gaming. toon, and manga stories and arts that are part of eastern culture and not something I can really understand. It is not part of my culture....something I kind of think of as ridiculous...but again it is not made mainly for me, or my culture. Hell I have enough issues trying to understand my own culture anymore...

Trying to put my own Morales and culture onto others arts, games, and such is the same thing as the other countries that think all Americans are a bunch of John Wayne cowboy's, or whatever is the current thing going around about us....something that really does not matter to me, and I am sure it is the same for eastern folks that hear people rail against things like this. Deserving of an eye roll and then get on with life, and that's about it....

    That's... convenient:

Japan uses the “Oh, she looks 12 but she’s actually a 2000 year old mage cursed to forever look like a child” trope to claim that technically this wouldn’t be pedophilia.

Do you really want to go down the rabbit hole of depravity of fantasy art when in the west, we have Disney movies about guys wanting to screw half fish girls.

People in glass houses should not thrown stones.. and all that.
Seriously? You're going to bring up the Little Mermaid as a Western equivalent of anime pedo soft core?

    Wow.
    Seriously?

This is Softcore Porn to you?

    THIS?

    WOW! Really.

So.. as I said, if anime sprites and the like are going to be something that triggers you, I wager a lot of upcoming Eastern MMO's shouldn't be on your play list.

Agreed. I don't like any of the Eastern MMO's. That's why I can't get into FFXIV.

but apparently they see no issue with a 16 year old in nothing more than a clam shell bra trying to run away from home and attract the attention of an adult male

You need to look at it from the site's perspective:

Based on the quality of the games being released (and advertised in this manner) it is hard to generate site traffic and pay the bills.

It's not like there are any MMORPGs setting the internet afire with discussions.

Consider that this thread has been the most interesting this week, with the exception of the necro'd threads from a few years back.

I don't care about the art style. The ads are out of control period.  Too many blocking your screen. My brand new computer was bogged down on this site.

They may be bad, but this site is still a lot better than kotaku! I literally can't tell what is a story and what is an ad on that site, it's bloody terrible!

Don't forget the guy showing up in the bedchamber of a sleeping lass and go for a kiss right away... ain't that an entry-level assault?

Or that other guy, coming across a dead girl in an open casket and also goes in for a kiss... at least we only have thread necros around here :)

(ok, most of those are from Grimm originally)

Nothing like being forced to watch a 30 second ad to watch an ad for a movie.

Ok.. as a Texan, this really cuts home to me, as I was legit asked all kinds of off the cuff questions about the crazy Texan Meme's by some brit friends I play with online, and how true they are. I think one of the ones I laughed the most about, that did not leave me going WTF, was do we really just leave our guns laying about on the dinner table when we eat and the like. I mean, yah,...
that's ridiculous. Everyone knows we keep them either under our 10 gallon hats or hidden in our cowboy boots.
Mines kept in my waistband holster on most occasions, though the 12ga sits in a nearby corner.

There was once a thread about having a small subscription on the site to get rid of all those invasive ads.
Not that I'm shocked by virtual boobs, but it's annoying and distraction, and don't even get me started on those video ads.

So until then... adblock it is.
I did not even find them invasive until they had a video window that followed you around the screen. A subscription would be another way to go but that ship has sailed a long time ago, rather late for them to go about it that way.

Didn't we also get told they were looking into raising "top level" above Orange? I am not a fan of the colours but if we must have them that would give us the feeling we are levelling. :)
