"I'm not apologizing for exclusivity.
I don't "have" to do anything.
Some of our fans are upset/angry, and I'm sorry they are. That isn't wrong, or weird. It's acknowledging how they feel.
That's it. That's my whole point."

I didn't see him apologizing about their PlayStation 5 exclusives. Why does everyone always bend over for Sony? Sony and Nintendo are the poster children for why we have to deal with all the game platform exclusive bullshit over the past 30 years. Maybe if Sony wasn't all about the exclusives I'd give a damn.
If one doesn't understand exclusive titles, then one doesn't understand business. Exclusive titles made by Sony owned Game Development Companies that is.
For ..everything else, blame the (insert) company for signing up with Sony for exclusive titles, or Xbox, or Nintendo. But wait, that's business too. Nevermind!
Reporter: What's behind Blizzard success, and how do you make your gamers happy? Blizzard Boss: Making gamers happy is not my concern, making money.. yes!

I don't understand why the apology. Microsoft users are your target audience(gee...I wonder why), just continue with your business and accept your new reality. It's not like Sony apologized for Bloodborne or DeS Remake(or anything else).
There is internet rage going on over this. Every time Xbox moves towards making games exclusives PS fans get upset. Sony has made consoles all about locking down developers. If only this would make Sony maybe talk with MS about opening this up, maybe making Sony's exclusives timed releases that come to Xbox maybe 6-12 months later. But I just dont see that happening.
Microsoft did this same thing with Halo, although, Halo was only available on Xbox and not even PC. So at least they are giving some leeway here. So if PS peeps don't want to buy an Xbox, they still have the option of playing on PC for now. I am hoping that PC remains an option down the road. They could change their mind on that.
So what is a great company, In Bethesda will now start to leak talent. This is how it usually happens.
Being bought out by a big company usually leads to people leaving. So I would say the era of Bethesda bringing us great games might be near an end if key people start to leave.

So he is saying "I am apologizing but I am not apologising". Social media has become a forum where anyone in public life is afraid to speak. Classic.
It's pretty clear to me. He's not apologizing for the business decision, that is what it is and someone or many "someones" made it.
He's acknowledging the disappointment of the fans who want it on Playstation and apologizing for the disappointment it caused.
I get what you're saying but here's my thought: So he's apologizing for their newly found sense of hurt about getting the short end of the stick this time? It still doesn't change the fact that neither he or any other industry big wigs really gave a damn or acknowledged how PC gamers and Xbox (to a lesser extent) have been on the short end of that for decades now. But now suddenly now he's concerned about "feelings"? Yeah, okay.
Somewhere in a building in Redmond, Hines is currently standing in a corner. When he's allowed to rejoin the world he'll get the official talking points with the section "Things we ignore and don't apologize for" highlighted in yellow.

I think too much weight is put on what people say in these things.
part of it is because they have some notoriety and part of it is that it's in "internet print" which will always be there for someone to ruminate over.
We don't know the discussion that went on regarding any of this. And I didn't see what prompted him to say what he did.
I think sometimes people answer honestly but in a way that doesn't need for it to be dissected.
Part of it could be just "him." I don't know the guy but I imagine that someone at that level in a business must make business-driven decisions. But maybe "he" as a regular civilian gets that it will upset people and his remarks reflect that.
I guess he didn't have to say anything, which he pointed out, but something within him felt compelled to at least address it.
I also think fans run rampant with this stuff imbuing it with a life that it doesn't necessarily need. Like some celebrity buying something in a store "why did she buy that? She didn't buy the competitor though clearly looked at it! Maybe she thinks it sucks!" etc etc.
The only weight I would put on it is "ah I see, that's another part of his stance on the whole thing. duly noted."
And that's about it. Pass the butter.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I normally wouldn't care about this, except for upon acquisition of Bethesda, MS came out and said they didn't want to take away ways for players to play games, they wanted everyone to play them. So, since they lied, I am super excited to not play this game.
For years Xbox players have been trying to get Final Fantasy XIV Online ported to XBox. It appears that it is going to stay an exclusive for Sony. So I have no problem with MS making Starfield an exclusive. The PS4 was the last Sony Console I will own, due to Sony not listening to their customers.
The only thing distinct about this is that a historically multiplatform series is going exclusive. That isn't normal, but it's also up for debate whether or not it's okay.
Thoigh frankly, console versions of TES and FO have always been a joke due to lesser mod support.
Playstation has lost. This is the end of the competition. Long run, consumers are the ones who lose. If you do not have good competition there is no need to make better games.

I really don't agree with that, yet. I'll take the Playstation Studios combined over MS's current offerings, including (and especially) Bethesda.
The bigger threat seems to be Nintendo successfully overtaking Sony in areas they are traditionally good at, and Sony really hasn't responded.
Microsoft is just focussing on Gamepass, that will be the true game changer, it already is. And with their, now running, streaming Beta we are on a whole other level. I play Xbox on my PC, I play Xbox on every single device that has an internet browser. I only need a subscription and a controller. Google Stadia is already extinct. Imagine the new Steam Portable, it will also be an Xbox X portable. Starfield is just a drop in the ocean that is Gamepass, Microsoft is playing a different game here.

I will admit, I chuckled a little at Playstation consumers upset over Bethesda getting sucked into the exclusivity war when Sony essentially started it. Maybe Sony and Microsoft can exchange on some exclusives overtime. Like Microsoft can get God of War if Sony can get Starfield.
