A Blockchain of some sort is not essential for cryptocurrency games and outside of games its usage varies. You don't actually need a blockchain to have cryptocurrency in a game, you could just have a cash shop that uses a bitcoin to buy stuff.

But without blockchain a game would not be able to integrate cryptocurrency at every level like taking a cut once you sold, repaired or bred an item or transferring item value to another cryptocurrency game. And that's what this is about integrating cryptocurrency into gaming at every level. No thanks.
Yes but to use Blockchain in your game, does not mean you use cryptocurrency in your game. Some do, some dont.
I have to say I have never seen one, but that may just be down to goggling. Even if true that's like saying to me that there are F2P games out there that have absolutely no P2W items. It is just a matter of time.

I did a bit of research, as near as I can tell Blankos Block Party incorporates block chain to create a platform for the creation and trading of limited edition NFTs inside a game universe but does not involve mining or crypto outside of promising to accept it as a payment form one day.

For now it uses traditional developer created currencies, one for in game and one for external trading, with a conversation rate set by the developer.

    From their website:

"You will be able to buy items and Blankos in-game with our in-game currency 'Moola', as well as Blanko Bucks that are purchased via a credit card (more payment methods are planned). On top of that, participating in future events may also grant you extra items or Blankos."

A number of news sites are covering the recent NFT Marketplace "Alpha" launch here's one from April.

"Once the alpha version of that marketplace opens next month, the company will make the transition from a maker of a game with collectible digital items to a game with items that you can buy and sell. Eventually, you’ll be able to earn those items (which are cute, vinyl-like characters dubbed Blankos) through gameplay and cash out your NFTs with any currency, said CEO John Linden in an interview with GamesBeat."

A more recent one from E3 which better explains how players create levels (over 2OK so far) and advance their "Blankos" (name for an in game asset)

""Players can invest time, their assets get better. They can train them to have different skills and the more time they put into it the more value it has because it becomes rarer," said Mythical Games' co-founder and chief creative officer Jamie Jackson. But the game is still very heavily mercantile, where are the blockchain games that as we were told "...could be a game that organically lives and evolves through a community". Unless posters think that monetary interaction is all that MMOs should be about? Blockchain is only game changing for MMOs when it comes to the ability to trade in game currency and for the developers being able to take a cut from everything you do with items in game; to me they are all going to eventually be changed so cryptocurrency can be exchanged for in game currency.

I think crypto will be acceptable to smaller devs who are happy to receive whatever form of payment they can get, dollars, Yuan, goats, bananas etc.

At present free market crypto is probably too volatile for larger firms, what a particular crypto is worth today in Euros might be much more, or much less in the future.

Nation backed currencies can swing too, but it tends to be much more slowly. Even then we've seen prices get changed (usually only upwards) when the value of a particular currency drops significantly in relationship to others.

Sure, the games who create their own crypto will have no problem as they will be able to retain some control over it's value.

I have to wonder if China's digital Yuan is going to not only gain world wide acceptance but perhaps quickly replace the Dollar standard in the long term.

If so, we will have moved one step closer to "A Brave New World"

    Happy Thursday.

I've always believed "labels" matter, especially in genres due to how different they all can be.

Someone linked an article the other day calling LOL the "greatest game evah" or some such nonsense.

It may very well be for MOBA fans (or the developers who profit from it)  but it's gameplay holds no interest to me.

Same with "Blockchain" games, crypto mining, NFT creation and making money from such core activities are not what I am looking for, regardless what other similarities in mechanics they may have to games I enjoy.

Right now a lot of the focus for the pitch of blockchain in gaming is on aspects of genuine ownership of stuff and benefits of that, in particular legitimately selling them for gain. It is no wonder it appears synonymous with cryptocurrency.

That aspect isn't of interest to me as that is just another route of monetization that does nothing for gaming in itself, or so it seems at any rate.

However, while blockchain is used in cryptocurrency it need not be so. It can be used in other ways, in ways that can benefit with no aspect of ownership or re-marketability attached, as I provided an example of above.

It is here where the technology could be of true benefit to players, and I'm hoping in time some developers will see that and use blockchain in that manner without the cryptocurrency element along with.

There are so many ways it could be applied, especially in the context of a MMORPG, that could enhance the experience. That alone would draw more players to a game and boost the revenue it earns. The crypto aspect need not be the draw or even present.

Here is where a better database like Blockchain could be an advantage. I cant count how many times in a MMO I have suffered a roll back. EQ1 my server had a 4 day role back. I lost tones of progress and items. WoW suffered a 1 day roll back and I lost some high end loot. A Blockchain game, the data is not stored in one location and a MMO using this tech, would not suffer item rollbacks.
The few times I had to deal with a Roll Back in EQ1, was due to something going very wrong, often a bug that caused a huge ripple effect, and needed to have the whole code removed, and this meant that everything had to be rolled back to before that bug was put into the live game.

If, Blockchain would have stopped that from happening, that means bugs and bugged items presa, would remain with the game forever, never allowing something to be fixed.

This might not be an advantage.

The China Yuan, will replace the USD as a national reserve currency, just as the USD replaced the Imperial Pound, as such, it is not a matter of IF, but a question of When.

Man, Im not gonna start researching this again. Go Google it. lots Blockchain games dont have any crypto currency. Its about recording ownership in the blockchain. Im not saying there isnt anything hinky going on out there but there is with all game types. Also, you dont need to be innovative in every area of a game. Just adding Blockchain can be all the added innovation you need. Blockchain can have nothing to do with Crypto, the second people are understanding this, is when you can have an intelligent conversation on the subject.  If you want to talk about just the games that have Crypto Currency and that problem, great but you cant lump everything into a ball and say BAD!!!!! It adds nothing to the conversation.

Well, when I "Googled it" as you suggested, I the first article (even highlighted), was here: https://www.pwc.com/us/en/industries/financial-services/fintech/bitcoin-blockchain-cryptocurrency.html

Let's start with some quick definitions. Blockchain is the technology that enables the existence of cryptocurrency (among other things). Bitcoin is the name of the best-known cryptocurrency, the one for which blockchain technology was invented. A cryptocurrency is a medium of exchange, such as the US dollar, but is digital and uses encryption techniques to control the creation of monetary units and to verify the transfer of funds.

That's from the article's paragraph. Personally, that's as far I wish to go. It's all data bits and some uses try to make people believe it has monetary value, which it does if people "believe" they want it. It makes as much sense as buying pixels in a cash shop. ZERO value to me, yet many others value these pixels highly.

How this pertains to block chains in gaming, I don't know yet the examples used in the article mention (quite a lot) the term "ledger." To me and my inexpert mind means "accounting" which means "money."
Depends on what you googled. I Googled "What is a Blockchain" Here is the first site that came up. If you dont want to read everything below. Put simply, its a way to store data thats more secure then just one person or company keeping stored data or a spreadsheet. Its a Database.

    What is Blockchain?

Blockchain seems complicated, and it definitely can be, but its core concept is really quite simple. A blockchain is a type of database. To be able to understand blockchain, it helps to first understand what a database actually is.

A database is a collection of information that is stored electronically on a computer system. Information, or data, in databases is typically structured in table format to allow for easier searching and filtering for specific information. What is the difference between someone using a spreadsheet to store information rather than a database?

Spreadsheets are designed for one person, or a small group of people, to store and access limited amounts of information. In contrast, a database is designed to house significantly larger amounts of information that can be accessed, filtered, and manipulated quickly and easily by any number of users at once.

Large databases achieve this by housing data on servers that are made of powerful computers. These servers can sometimes be built using hundreds or thousands of computers in order to have the computational power and storage capacity necessary for many users to access the database simultaneously. While a spreadsheet or database may be accessible to any number of people, it is often owned by a business and managed by an appointed individual that has complete control over how it works and the data within it.

So how does a blockchain differ from a database?

    Storage Structure

One key difference between a typical database and a blockchain is the way the data is structured. A blockchain collects information together in groups, also known as blocks, that hold sets of information. Blocks have certain storage capacities and, when filled, are chained onto the previously filled block, forming a chain of data known as the “blockchain.” All new information that follows that freshly added block is compiled into a newly formed block that will then also be added to the chain once filled.

A database structures its data into tables whereas a blockchain, like its name implies, structures its data into chunks (blocks) that are chained together. This makes it so that all blockchains are databases but not all databases are blockchains. This system also inherently makes an irreversible timeline of data when implemented in a decentralized nature. When a block is filled it is set in stone and becomes a part of this timeline. Each block in the chain is given an exact timestamp when it is added to the chain.

    That's a good reference. I Googled "blockchain vs cypto", I believe :)

I'm learning more than I did before, but I still don't see a use for me, personally :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Im not for or hate Blockchain Games. Its new and I was really mad when cash shops came out but their has been some F2P games I really loved like GW2. Im not sure if this will be more of the same. Some good games and some bad. But what I dont agree with is terms like Crypto Games. Thats a false narrative. Its Blockchain Games and we dont know how many of these games will use Crypto. Im sure there will be many, just like we have many P2W games. I know this, I will be careful like a snake before I try any Blockchain Game.

Yes but the right label needs to be given. Like Cash Shop games, Some we have labeled Cosmetic and some P2W. We get an idea of what to avoid. Can we be sure all Blockchain Games should get a BAD label yet? WHATCH OUT FOR CRYTOGAMING!!!! =-) not sure that fits yet.

Crypto gaming is a subset of the greater blockchain game genre, much like MMORPGs are a subset of the MMO space.

All Crypto games use blockchain but not all blockchain games use crypto / mining.

I don't know if blockchain games should be called a genre, though.

It's a technical solution. We don't call that we have DX12 -games genre, Vulkan -games genre, or any other technical solution as genre either.

Crypto gaming is a subset of the greater blockchain game genre, much like MMORPGs are a subset of the MMO space.

All Crypto games use blockchain but not all blockchain games use crypto / mining.

    /End thread.
I don't know if blockchain games should be called a genre, though.

It's a technical solution. We don't call that we have DX12 -games genre, Vulkan -games genre, or any other technical solution as genre either.
True, but it's sexy in the media to add the block chain label to everything so might as well run with it though both crypto and NFTs could be part of any gaming genre.

I have to wonder if China's digital Yuan is going to not only gain world wide acceptance but perhaps quickly replace the Dollar standard in the long term.

If so, we will have moved one step closer to "A Brave New World"

The China Yuan, will replace the USD as a national reserve currency, just as the USD replaced the Imperial Pound, as such, it is not a matter of IF, but a question of When.
Pretty much we kinda fked ourselves I'm just waiting for it tbh, this video did a number on me on realizing how screwed my generation is, meanwhile they say things like think about the future when they have essentially created a bonefire and put the millennials on it by continuing to borrow from the future

This is partially why I don't care on many things in life because at the end of the day in 10-30 years I don't expect good things, I expect the worse so when life hits harder then bricks I am not to depressed or surprised, in the mean time I just want fun

I'm the same way. I've really never been a "fad chaser" that I can recall. Right now, bitcoin is a publicly traded commodity just like those listed on the video thumbnail (lumber, iron, corn, gas, oil). It rise and fall exactly like any other stock. Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I don't see anything particularly interesting or revolutionary about blockchain games.  Crypto isn't much different from fiat other than its decentralization.  The items are just being treated like NFTs minus the artist, unless you consider the game dev the artist.  It's basically just D3s RMAH on crack.  RMAH didn't work very well for very long, and Blizzard is a big name in gaming.

I expect most of the blockchain games will be low quality games that will, at best, attract a few whales and a few hundred underlings.  I personally don't mind having a few outlier games that encourage, promote and have as their core design philosophy the ability to make money from playing; but I wouldn't want to see it as the norm.

Also bitcoin can be hacked just like anything else I know someone who forgot their bitcoin account password and used auto password cracker program and got back in pfff $50,000 worth of bit coins and he can only sell a few a day at a time LOL, they put a limit on how much you can sell a day on purpose to insure if the price changes to much you can't sell it all at once to recoup the cost because if theres mass selling it all crashes really quickly so they opted for slow decay

Cold wallets can't be hacked unless you can control all of the computing power in the world for the next few billion years or so, or the $5 wrench hack.

Hot wallets can be hacked through various means just like anything else online, keyloggers and the like.

If you friend is using an exchange that doesn't allow you to have a stop-loss or limits you in some way from selling, then he should use a real exchange.

This is interesting, will such games attract whales? On the one hand cryptogames seem a good fit, you get something which is more unique, I don't see these as art items they are not that unique. But is a whale going to want to transfer his stuff to another game, where he unlikely to be a whale? Also players have ways of building up in game cryptocurrency that they don't in standard F2P, that may deter whales who want to be the biggest fishes in the pond. It will depend on what's sold in the cash shop.

If the whales don't come can cryptogames succeed, possibly but I don't see them being anywhere near as attractive to developers and investors if they don't.

So if a company makes a billion in bitcoin profit can the government even track that income? is that why alot of people are headed this direction?
