The preview I saw for this game some time ago made it look incredibly generic.

Sad to see yet another bargain bin game released.

Kinda off topic, but man gaming over the last few years has started to feel like the video game crash all over again. Live service games, early access, kickstarter.. so many games are just shoved out unfinished, broken, lacking content, etc., and most of them are full of microtransactions or tons of overpriced DLC. And there's so much tat everywhere due to free engines. Been so difficult to get enthusiastic about anything, and when I do, I'm always letdown.

Far too buggy and obviously designed around consoles to the detriment of PC.

The first night we played it took 20 minutes for 1 friend and I to actually manage to get to group together. Then after we ran the first mission, we disconnected (still happens every time). A third friend has never been able to join us. Every time he connects to our game he instantly gets kicked out. It even happens by himself if he switches to Friends or Invite mode (instead of offline).

Every time we join we end up getting double feedback from being in Discord and the in game chat. Despite the fact that we have it turned OFF in the menu, we have to go in every time, toggle it ON, and then back OFF.

Just killing some time until Crowfall launches in 2 weeks but I don't think we will make it. Good thing this was free through Gamepass.

Too bad, I was hoping we were getting more of the original Dark Alliance games from PS2.
    This ain't it Chief.

If they fix whatever is wrong i might check it out later on sale. As it is now i rather go back and play the OG DA/DA2.

This one made me really sad. Think their score of 4 is dead on. I ended up refunding the game and bought scarlet nexus instead. So glad I did as I am enjoying that one ten times better.

The combat was lack luster in the game, especially for anyone that didn't want to use a controller. That is my number one pet peeve in gaming if it is on a computer I better be able to play it on KB and mouse with breaking my fingers to do it. If I wanted to play with a controller I would buy it on one of the consoles.

The way it made you replay entire areas if you died didn't do it any favors either. Sometimes the camera would hide an enemy off screen that randomly would kill me because I lost track of it and the auto lock wouldn't undo so I could find them. Just bad design systems all around in the game.

I'm glad I was able to play this through Game Pass because I would have been very disappointed if I had paid full price. Bugs and story aside, this game is just boring to play. The combat is awful and it felt slow and awkward to play. I see some people comparing it to Vermintide but the only similarities is that it's a class based co-op game. Speaking of co-op, if anyone plans to play this solo, don't bother. It was clearly meant to be played with others, which is fine, but even Vermintide, which IMO plays better co-op as well, gives you some friendly AI party members if you want to play solo.

    Hard pass on Dark Alliance.

Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

Looks like a poor man's DnD-tide. Or like even worse, potential-free Anthem, just set in DnD.

Did anyone really expect anything from this one?

I was really hoping this game would be great.  Alas it was not.  I can't really bitch too much.  With Solasta and Baldur's gate being pretty darn good, I am confident we will continue to get more D and D games.

Had it on my wishlist for a long time. Once it dropped, I deleted it. Baldur's Gate was not even remotely interesting. D&D games are ruined when they put out trash like this.

I respect the unabashed tough-love review by the author. Wish there was more of that on this website when it's warranted. I watched the trailer & after I thought if this was a animated series I'd watch it daily or weekly, but as a video game it didn't motivate me enough to think about buying it. I say think about buying since imo no one should be pre-buying video games these days.

When I think of D&D I think of pre-generated characters. They are basically synonymous.
  • CryomatrixCryomatrix Member EpicPosts: 3,223
Once i saw it had the 4 r.a. salvatore chars i knew it was going to be generic and buggy, was rushed and obviously nothing new. Using 4 known characters means they didnt have time or budget to innovate nor make a complete bug free game.

This article states that this game is the first game you control Drizzt... when you can totally play as him in the other BG: Dark Alliance games. So I have some heavy doubts that BG: Dark Alliance 1 & 2 are this reviewers favorite games from the ps2 era. Sure, it requires beating the game first to unlock Drizzt, but doesn't one usually beat their favorite games?

Pretty amn daccurate.  I had an xbox sub, so i installed, played for about 15 minutes and uninstalled.  At no time do you feel in control of your character, with attack buttons advancing you forward and locking you into a long animation, while enemies just kinda staring at you like you're an idiot and doing little else.  The common ranged attack for all characters looks straight out of the original playstation.  Feel bad for anyone that actually bought this game.  No amount of fixing will make this game worth playing.

"D&D" is a system, not a place. A game is not set on "D&D". FFS...

So, in this case, the Forgotten Realms, Faerûn or Toril or Abeir-Toril, you name it.

I know the 'brand must prevail' so for the sake of selling it to dumb numbs they put D&D over it even so there is no D&D to it... but I expect that from mindless corporations... I just expect more of you.

What are you talking about? That's like saying World of Warcraft isn't a Warcraft game because its an MMORPG instead of an RTS..

Dark Alliance 1 and 2 are hack and slash isometric action RPG's, and this game is just a poorly executed hack and slash 3rd person action rpg.

He's correct, but also ultra pedantic. He simply stated that the game takes place on Abeir-Toril, Faerun, which is correct ; but also saying that a game takes place in DnD setting is valid too. You just need to add a word. CLASSIC DnD setting ; that way everything's said and done. Because there are other DnD setting in DnD "multiverse": Eberron, Outer Planes(Carceri, Mt.Celestia, Wildlands etc) and such.

It's basically a pointless comment. For a pointless game. Heh, it fits! :)

Not, it's not. You can play in Toril using other systems. It's a scenario.

That's like saying you'll play tabletop rpg with your friends in World of Warcraft. Ah come on. It's common sense.

Pedantic? I'm not correcting your ponctuation. This is like calling a video game a "nintendo". Come on.
What other systems? But I guess you can. You can play Battlefleet, Armageddon, Standard, Kill Team, Necromunda...all in 40k. Something like that?

And you can play Tabletop in World of Warcraft. Not only is any Warcraft Tabletop technically taking place on world of Warcraft, but there's also this little gem here:  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft:_The_Board_Game . ;)

I think the point he is trying to make is that D&D is a ruleset, and that the Forgotten Realms are a campaign setting. The FR is a D&D original setting, as are Greyhawk, Dark Sun, etc. You could use the FR setting in any other ruleset. As for Dark Alliance, he is right that the game is not based on the D&D ruleset like some other games are, and only uses Dungeons and Dragons as far as the Forgotten Realms campaign setting is originally published under that trademark. Sorta how RA Salvatore doesn't really adhere to the D&D ruleset in his novels.

I think he ultimately was trying to say that Dark Alliance isn't really a D&D game, and while someone in PR wants to use the trademark to get a bunch of idiots to buy the game solely on the name, we as players should know better than to fall for the advertising.

The reviewer is spot on with many of his opinions about Dark Alliance. The graphics aren't great, the AI is terrible, the story is lackluster, scaling at higher difficulty is out of whack for a solo player, and on and on. My initial impressions were the same, but I have found some good mixed in with all of the bad, and have even changed my mind on some of the things I originally disliked after playing for a while.

I may be the only person to think this, but the combat has actually grown on me. While I agree that the combo system isn't fluid and you don't seamlessly move from one attack to the next, I personally don't mind the animation lock. I have always disliked the immersion breaking nature of being able to cancel an attack mid-swing, and that lack of magically being able to break the laws of physics and reset your character to avoid an incoming attack is why I like the Dark Alliance combat. It slows things down and fits the style of combat Salvatore uses in his books.

You have to slow down, use strategy, and stop spamming buttons in big fights. I've learned that taking out archers and casters is top priority, just like a D&D battle. I've also stopped spamming attacks and started relying on blocks, parries, and dashes to avoid damage. And it's all getting better as I unlock more moves for the characters.

The characters are another thing I like. All four have a different play style, and as long as you aren't exploiting the horrible AI by using Catti-Brie's bow to pick them off outside of their reaction range, each character brings something different to the table. I still don't like that we are stuck with the preset characters, but at least they all have their own skills and abilities.

As for the difficulty levels, I've come to accept that it's more of an implementation issue than a scaling issue. Even though you are given the option to up the difficulty right from the get go, with adventure scores that have nothing to do with your chance of success, the extra difficulty levels work for well geared groups. I would like it if the first two challenge levels worked more like a normal and hard mode, I think of the other levels as trying to play Nightmare mode in Diablo 3 with a brand new character.

In the end, I think the original reviewers take on the game is on target. I don't see Dark Alliance as a game that can be fixed since many of the issues aren't just bugs and performance problems but design decisions that are baked into the game. Personally, though, I like some of those decisions, and I wouldn't bet that I am still playing the game in a couple of weeks, I will be playing through the story. And at the price of free on Gamepass, I will consider that enough.

Thing is, DnD is multiple rulesets. Is it the Basic ruleset? Expert? Advanced? 2.0? 3.0? 3.5? Whatever that mess was they released after 3.5? Does it include Unearthed Arcana and other non-essential sourcebooks?

So, even arguing that it's a ruleset and thus shouldn't apply to a game in a Dungeons and Dragons setting is both pedantic, and vulnerable to further pedantry. I feel like I've lost a bit of my soul just participating in this go-round.

PS: The game is terrible, don't buy it. Even if you have an XBox sub, you should really consider if you want to waste the time and resources to download it. My money is that the answer is "no" for anybody that lacks 3 friends that are desperate for something to do.

This review friggin sucks cause by all reports it is spot on......I liked and enjoyed this series of books through the years so was really looking forward to play a game based on this epic group of characters.....why can't we have a good game about these guys....... :/

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
