Just because it doesn't have combat it doesn't mean there won't be competitive play. The premise is that players join a world devoid of "danger" to say the least, so there's a larger emphasis on exploration, crafting, and other types of mini games. Combat in the traditional sense won't find a place here.
Personally I think it'll be refreshing to have a game with multiple options aside from combat, which is 90% of most other games.
So... competitive corn picking? Doesn't sound as fun as using all your skills to beat an elite mob and get some nice loot that only a few other players have.
Sometimes it amazes me how shortsighted some gamers are. There's plenty of ways to make competitive games that don't include violence. Sports are one of the biggest ways that pit players against each other without violence. Races. Party games. Combat isn't the only way to make a game exciting.
Oh, you mean sports like...hockey, or American Football, or boxing, or martial arts, or hunting, or rugby, non violent sports like those yes?
It is a community simulation and just like The Sims this will appeal more to women and I am not even from the 1950's. Sure you can do sports which are not violent like tennis but most involve a lot of physical contact or danger. Not sure sports even feature in the game though?
But guys will play it, just not as avidly. The media will fete it because this is a game where there is no combat in a genre that usually has it. That gets coverage as the media loves playing the worthy card.
It may actually be a big game, The Sims shows how mega a game like that can be if you do it right. But not for me, I do really like some of the ideas though, having players play humans who are thought of as a legendary race now just remerging into the world is inspired.
If You watch twitch You'll see that games like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley have a much higher number of female streamers and viewers. Many more than with other games. So those games do indeed appeal to women. And Palia wants to be something like those.

At the moment Palia seems to be a white canvas for many to put their wishes and projections on. Because we still don't have much information about gameplay and features. The devs have been still very vague about gameplay.

I'm very surprised, and disappointed by the negative feelings towards this game by all these 'open-minded' users.
Need I remind that Animal Crossing New Horizons has sold over 32.63 million units. So there is an incredibly sized audience for this title just waiting to be tapped. This definitely isn't aimed at poaching any current MMOs except possibly from players that love housing/fashion in FFXIV. It's also very similar to games like Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley (over 10 million copies sold, although minimal "combat" is included).
Speaking of combat, a game doesn't need literal fighting as the pretense for its' gameplay or story to be good. I'm incredibly saddened that so many here see it that way.
Even then, I've read that there will be light, optional combat in the game.
Having your own preference is fine but making blanket statements based on opinions is just downright ignorant. Also very surprised at how some true colors have come out.
Just because millions of people play games that I think are stupid doesn't mean I'm not going to continue to mock them for their choices.

The big issue is that none of those are MMORPGs (far as I know anyways. I could be wrong)
An MMORPG generally requires lots of players be online a lot of the time. If lots of players aren't online a lot of the time, it might as well just be an offline game (optionally with some online features) instead. For example.... well, Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, and Stardew Valley. Or a lobby game with a few friend list features and multiplayer modes but mostly solo play, like many mobile games that aren't auto-play MMORPGs.
So how does an MMORPG ensure that lots of players are online a lot of the time? Combat, usually. It's called the Grind. And if you say "Well, keeping players online with a Grind is a stupid idea", I'd actually agree with you and IMHO that's one of the reasons why the MMORPG genre is in decline.
So.... if the MMORPG genre is in decline because combat is the only known way to keep people online together long enough to justify it being an MMORPG in the first place instead of an offline game (possibly with some online features) is an outdated or flawed concept, why hasn't anyone else thought of a different design for an MMORPG?
...if the answer to that question was so easy, someone else would have thought of a different design for an MMORPG in the first place.
If you aren't going to make your "Get lots of people online at the same time!" design be based around combat, what are you going to make it based around? Party games? Then you might as well just release another Mario Party game with online features instead of a full blown MMORPG. Racing? What could your MMORPG offer that Mario Kart with online play doesn't already (besides a chat interface, but you can get that anywhere)? What would an open world offer such a game based around party games or racing that would make that worth it?
Would your MMORPG based around party games or racing or farming or puzzling be anything more than just Mario Party/Mario Kart/Harvest Moon/Puyo Puyo Tetris + chat room + a lobby? (or an open world that's effectively just a really BIG lobby)
If it were that easy to make a SUCCESSFUL MMORPG based around something besides combat that gave players a reason to play it over just getting the latest Mario Party/Kart/Harvest Moon/Second Life, someone probably would have done so by now. I mean, it's been like, 30 years.
If Riot somehow pulls it off, good for them. I'd be very surprised though. Even MMORPGs I saw that started out focusing heavily on the sandbox aspects with minimal or equal-at-most combat (Wakfu, Archeage, Black Desert, etc) gradually shifted towards combat over time with the updates.
Hell, it looks like that's what's happening with this game, where they started out without combat then realized they needed it so now they're adding it. I believe there is a high probability (almost a certainty, even) that the the game will be heavily combat based by the time it reaches release.
Invites went out today, and EVERY ONE of the invites I looked at, as far as the people whos name turned purple, just joined the Discord server at the first of the month! Less than 30 days on the server and you get a pre-alpha invite. Funny enough ALL of them joined between the 3rd and the 6th of June. Looks to me like someone needed some hype in their game so created a bunch of fake Discord profiles, so they could hype up some pre-alpha invites! I sent this information to one of the DEV team and got temp ban! So clearly I hit a nerve! They don't want me showing the proof that I found that a bunch of fake profiles joined the server less than a month ago, all within 3 days of each other and they are the ones that got the invites! Something going on here!! Go to their Discord, look for the purple names with the pre-alpha tester role and search their profile and see if they joined between the 3rd and 6th of June!!
I wouldn't spend a dime with some shady team like that!1 Not one cent! Seen too many companies come in with a lot of hype and good artwork, a cool looking tech demo and try to sell it as a up and coming AAA MMO and then walk away with $$$$$ to a country that no one knows where it is and never heard from again... and good luck getting your money back!!
