That would probably be the only game I would be interested in a private server, providing that it wasn't another case of stolen code. Software piracy is a big 'no go' for me.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
Surprised to see this article!, I thought this sites official stance was anything not corporate was anathema, leper-UN-clean thou shalt not speak of. That being said my personal experiences with Project:1999 have been as good or better then they ever were with the "official" original.
The Return of Reckoning seems interesting. Even though I'm not any fan of pvp
To me private servers show the potential that modders would bring to a game that entered a partnership with them. It is an area fraught with security, privacy and legal issues. But if you could get that right, give modders recompense for their endeavours without them owning parts of a studio run game it could be the creation of a new way of gaming.
We have seen a window of what this might be like from the player creations in Second Life to the mods of FO4, CiV, to the private servers themselves. Tap that potential and that old adage that MMOs can't get past end game could disappear, the modders would push back end game while the studio gets the next expansion ready. The MMO would have no end game.
Yeah, I was a big fan of Marvel Heroes so you know I looked for one. The best I could come up with were a few comments of people wishing there was one and a couple of rumors of a secret server with no proof of existence. Maybe some day it'll happen.

Great, now this will get flagged and taken down!
Really though, I've been writing here for three years now and not once has any editor tried to influence, censor, or in any way try to change my opinion about what I was writing. They have allowed every stupid thought be recorded in internet history. The readers on the other hand, they tell me all the time how stupid I am!
Does anyone remember Earth & Beyond? They have a nice PS up but not many play it. It's kind of sad because that game needs players. The most that are online is 40 people.
I thought Warhammer Online Return of Reckoning was a complete pain in the ass to get going. I had to completely uninstall my virus protector and turn off all Windows security measures because it would give me hundreds of trojan virus warnings every time I tried to run the game, which worried me a little. Once I finally up, it ran pretty good. It did showcase how great that game was up to max level and how bad that game was once you hit max level.
The DAoC and SWG shards were pretty easy to get going. Those are both great games. I may be interested in retrying Wildstar.
I cant wait till there is a real deal Wildstar private server worth playing. That music on the login screen, I loved it so much.

EB was my first MMORPG and where I got my screenname. I remember getting into a zen of mining gas clouds and asteroids. I even had a before/after note showing where I was before I was able to refine a bunch of high-end ores and after I was done. I gained a trader level doing that. Then when they said it was being sundowned, I just couldn't play anymore.
CoH:Homecoming still gets over 2000 players at a time most evenings. That's more than the Marvel Avengers game gets. I enjoyed it for a while, but now it just seems a bit dull. I enjoy playing with friends but I haven't started a new character all year and I'm not sure I'm going to. This helped the sting of it being taken away from me and during quarantine. Now I may move on except for twice a week when I play with my crew for badges and TFs.
As far as SWG emulator servers go, I found that finding my disks was impossible. I eventually found a friend that had his readily at hand. He shipped me his, minus one CD. Oh, my! So had to wait a while longer but eventually he got it to me. Got everything installed and logged in. I thought I had travelled back in time. The game was just as I remember and loved. Unfortunately, what was not there were all my friends from that long ago time. Still stayed and played for a long time and had some fun. Highly recommend this for the die hard fan.
Additional comment, a lot more newer PC's are coming without a CD device. And while you can get an external drive to do the work with the CD, it is just another obstacle when it comes to enjoying these "resurrected" titles.

Man, they need you on that server. The people that do play are so helpful to new players. You will get gear built for you for free up to level 4. And you can play the missing classes EA left out. Go look it up.
Private servers I've tried include; Project 1999, DAOC (whichever one was most popular at the time), Legend of Pirates of the Caribbean, City of Heroes Homecoming, and most recently SWG Restoration.
Not surprisingly I spent the most time in Project 1999. EQ was my first MMO and even though I despise the endgame the nostalgia factor was pretty big for me.
You know, I don't really like Private Servers. And playing by some custom rules. And always being at a mercy of unknown people.
So what do I say? Just make your time and enjoy the now as best you can. It is NOT coming back. Only a facsimile of it can emerge. You missed something? Eh, there's probably a reason for it.
They are good, but...I don't like them. Chasing the ghosts of a past, instead of cherishing it...ok, they are good for tying up any loose ends.
I betaed Earth and Beyond. Was quite surprised it closed down so soon. They never gave it much of chance since games in much worse state went on while this game had some great ideas. A pity really.
SWG was imo the first real drama when comes to changes in gaming.I dissected it and felt change was definitely warranted.I feel it would have been a far worse travesty if Smedley said NO CHANGE and just let it bleed players and completely die.
The argument was if the changes were the correct changes.Well over many games and many years of different games i have seen what appears most often as studios making very poor decisions over time.
I believe there is a simple reason and that is eventually all games begin to lose players and profits become less.So these dev studios are not in the position to make costly high end changes but instead look for cheap cost cutting ideas, lazy ideas. This type of cheap lazy change happens both with NEW content and changing old content.
Now the big HOWEVER......
My experience has been that private servers will never come close to the original so called happy times players had. This however is also true when the studios themselves try and recreate that vanilla feeling,it just NEVER happens the same.
SO what exact purpose do private servers accomplish?IMO there is only two,to either bring back a game "sort of" that went under or to give players a somewhat resemblance to the game they love without having to pay BS subscription or cash shop, season pass fees.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

EA bought out Westwood studios for the command & conquer series. They had no interest in an MMO back then. They kept gutting the game of systems while people played it. Most got frustrated and quit. Which made it easier for EA to shut it down. The devs of the game were shocked to know the owners of Westwood were selling the studio.. Many of them put their soul in E & B. They had huge plans for it.

I'm pretty sure the music is on Soundcloud and/or Spotify. I remember downloading a copy.
