Cryptic has been a shoddy studio since it was solely-owned. Only reason PWI keeps them around is because STO and Neverwinter are so heavily monetized they are profitable.

This says a lot about the state of the industry to me. The game was not even officially launched, it was still in beta, but it was not "financially successful enough." That's crazy to me, who would be spending money during a beta when there is a good chance the servers will be wiped and that money is literally down the drain?

Maybe I am just a dinosaur at this point, but beta used to be about testing and getting ready for launch. Now games like Star Citizen sit in Alpha for a decade and sell items in a cash shop.

Dumb. I feel bad for the employees and hope they can find work with a company that has their shit together.

I bet Craptic cares as much about their employees as they do their games and customers.

Not that it is any surprise but it really also tells us that betas are not really what they claim to be.Everything that is  going on in the industry is a shambles.Very small investment, crowd funding so the yare not risking anything, just a pile of crap games getting tossed at the wall to see if anything sticks.

NONE of the games that are making a ton of money are even remotely good, every last one of them are low budget crap designed to be f2p with a cash shop.

You can really get a sense of direction right from day 1,how a game is going to be monetized, how it was funded, time spent, money spent all of it sends up red flags.

In case of SC yeah that is a lot of time and a lot of money but there were many red flags along the way that already told us Chris Robert's true intent for the game and that is riding the cash shop money train till it crashes.

Except that ain't the case anymore. As Bill (Murphy) said years ago, these are real launches in practice, and calling them beta is just a marketing gimmick.
No server wipes, no feedbacks nor reports needed, etc.  There's nothing beta in them.

I'm a bit surprised on how every portal and page covering this news piece don't forget to mention "and it was still in beta"...
Sure it was, by the label.
But in practice it was launched.

With Bill's set of criteria: open character creation, no server wipes, and fully operational cash shop, that equals a proper launch, regardless of how they label it.

With that said I can only quote myself from yesterday. It wasn't my cup of tea, still not happy to see its cancel. Yesterday the headcount wasn't out yet, just the fact of layoffs, 44 people is quite a large group...

No sign of Star Citizen stopping because you can't stop something with such impeccable substance. Nothing on the market touches it. Elite Dangerous is biting the dust on steam xD, and everything else coming out is just SC lite and will be released even later than SC.

For something on the market to touch SC, it must be on the market to be touched.

That's got to be so disheartening. To work so hard on something like Magic: Legends, then for all that work to be thrown in the trash right in your face before it even really gets a chance to shine. Glad to see other game studios offering positions to these artists because they don't deserve to be discarded like this..

The game was bad unfortunately. That doesn't mean the developers who were working on the game were bad devs though, there's obviously some talented people who worked on the game. I hope all of people that were laid off find jobs in new studios and strive there.

On the brightside, they did say they were sending full refunds of all money to anyone and everyone who spent on the game, so...
I'm glad to be reimbursed, tbh. And they're handling the closing decently, at least.

Still think it's a shame how the game turned out, though. I liked it.

Of course this entire community's probably rolling on the floor laughing and cackling so...

Too bad. So sad. Here’s hoping the whole Craptic studio sunsets soon. Trek deserves better than a AA F2P ship collecting game.
