Torchlight 3, formally known as Torchlight Frontiers, has officially released on Steam. Robert has been hands on a copy a few days ago and have been dutifully playing since so we can bring you the juicy details about the MMO that wasn't. This is our review in progress.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Edit. That includes the horrible Pagan (Online), at least they had cool classes.

Kyleran on yours sincerely
'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
Gdemami absolutely not being an armchair developer
Also played railmaster and the skills you get just dont seem impactful. Was playing on ridiculous and the bullet sponginess of the mobs is unreal.
Leveling up is so underwhelming especially when you gain a useful trait only after spending 3 or 4 talent points. When you arent getting a trait you just get a minor 2 or 3 % increase in the skill damage or the like. It's so dreadful.
Agree with above. Avoid this game. Only play it if you get it free like in a humble bundle or if Epic gives it away. Not worth paying for.
3k x $40 = $120k = nothing
People will disagree but I think they would've been better off sticking with the MMO no matter how terrible it was and just work on it slowly. They could've sold cosmetics, pets and maybe even classes.
Yeah I disagree. If this would have been an mmo, they would have probably lost every bit of their money and had nothing playable to show for it. They made the right move, cut your loses, release something crappy and hope for a loyal group of followers to make your money up over time.
Mend and Defend
That's 3k concurrent and so they probably 10k or more in total over the course of the day. Wolcen had about 120k concurrent I think and they announced they sold one million copies in the first month. We have no idea how many bought it on the XBOX or PS4, but I doubt it's enough to save the studio from at least cutting back jobs.
Their current model means they will save content updates for expansions, for the most part. I doubt they'd have as many free updates as say Grim Dawn has.
I think they could have kept the MMO and just ditched horizontal progression, which is where most of the complaints came from. But having sets for each resist type, based on frontier, really would have been boring. But even then, there was no real incentive to buy MTX for such a shallow game.
And they literally had no clue what end game they wanted for Frontiers. Their priorities were just a mess from the very start. I really don't know what Max and Tyler were thinking honestly.
Pets are all broken, they often disappear or act weird.
Pirate is broken because the Skeletons arent re-summoning.
Horrible Managers and Developers.
I wonder if they sold the company to someone that doesnt care
