What is your favorite pet class in an MMORPG?

I always try to play a pet class in MMORPG's, here are some of my favorites:

DAOC Minstrel -- the minstrel can capture NPC's in the game and make them into pets. You can even capture pets that are higher than you are, but you have to keep them constantly under supervision, and they could break free and attack you. I used to like to capture trees as pets, and then hide out in a forest in a PvP zone. When somebody comes by, my tree steps out and attacks them.

City of Heroes -- CoH has lots of pet classes. The Illusion controller can summon indestructible pets that work as tanks. The Mastermind of course has a huge range of pets, each with separate abilities and levels. But my favorite I think is still the Warshade's "kushballs", floating pets that fly and rain down destruction.

Vanguard -- the Necro pet in Vanguard was cool. It had a full range of skills, and you could take body parts off of slain NPC's to upgrade the necro's pet. His appearance changed too, when you did that. Probably one of the most controllable pets in any game.

Some games have pets that are not so good, such as:

LoTRO -- the pets in LoTRO have poor pathing. The bird pet cannot fly, for example. You slide down a hill, but the bird can't fly to follow you, it has to find a long ground path to get to you. Weird.

ESO -- the pets in ESO are hardly even pets. They are almost uncontrollable. They don't change in appearance either, so they all look the same, and act the same.

Honorable mentions:

DAOC Cabalist -- a cool pet
Vanguard Shaman -- I especially liked the fire bird pet

I never played WoW, so not sure about pet classes there.

    Age of Conan necromancer was pretty cool. IIRC, you had a certain number of "points" for your summons and so you could summon a bunch of smaller pets or fewer larger pets.

    My favorite ever though was probably the Squig Herder from Warhammer Online. You could actually ride (in) your pet using it as armor.

    Beastmaster

    I left the pet classes to the very last when i played FFXI because i never thought any were good from other games.Well years later i finally played the Beastmaster and was like wow,i should have played this first.The main issue was that Square penalized xp for using a pet and then later let up a bit and only penalized the user not the group.

    It is still by far the best class i have ever played with perhaps argument from the Redmage.

    All other games the pet feels weak and those classes don't typically feel any better than any other class.Within FFXI the BST felt incredibly powerful to the point i could solo very tough fights that even a group would struggle with.

    Within FFXI it is typical to have a 6 man group ,it just works the most efficiently but if you had 3 players playing a BST class you would own much better than any group of 6.However because of the games structure,the combat designs the creature designs there is no one setup bears all,sometimes having a bunch of magic casters can own,that is ewhat makes FFXI such a great game,it is extremely versatile.

    I would put the BST as the 10/10 pet class and the next maybe a 6/10 with the FFXI Summoner class,all other games pet classes barely make a 5/10 grade.

    Anarchy Online Engineer and Metaphysicist

    Both classes were very fun to play and solo missions with...Both had great buffs too

    I am not a great one for pets, but my Mastermind was fun in CoH, not sure why pet classes do not usually appeal. But anything to do with mounts and I am there.

    'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless. 

    It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.

    It is just huge resource waste....'

    I have a love/hate relationship with pet classes. They're great when they work like they're supposed to but that's rare.

    Some of my favorites were the Theurgist in DAoC (temporary pets but the stun lock caused by the air eles never got old :) ,) Loremaster in LOTRO, WOW Hunter with its huge variety of tamable pets once upon a time, ESO Sorcerer with a pet that at one time had the very best "oh shit," 2-person heal in the game, ESO Warden with many temporary pets and one permanent big ass bear.

    PS: ESO doesn't do a very good job of making pet users aware of the "Y + left click" command to send your pet to attack and aggro without you needing to attack yourself or "Y + right click" to stop them from attacking.

    I'm generally not a fan of pet classes as you are handing part of your personal power over to an NPC which you can barely control. The tradeoff never seemed worth it to me and I'd usually end up very frustrated.


    That said, I vote Loremaster from LotRO


    The pets sucked, but the rest of the class was awesome and the pets were mostly useless in group content so they didn't hold me back. Only time I enjoyed the pets was when I could send in my stealthed lynx to get a killing blow on someone in PvP who would otherwise have been out of range.

    Yeah. Like I said ZOS sucks at letting players know about this. You either find it accidentally when messing with key binds - it's there near the bottom - or by word of mouth.

    Don't know about working for companions since I haven't played after they added that but my guess is that it would work for them too.

    I did not know that and I have 2 wardens I use a controller so who knows what the command is for that.

    Mine is still the necro from DOAC with a healer in the group your abomination could farm huge groups that was helpful as that game was grindtastic

    Not truly a pet class, but I always thought one of the funniest and coolest classes of any MMO was the Hive Keeper in Asheron's Call 2.  They literally carried around a wasp hive and used wasps to attack.

    The only two pet classes that I found any fun at all were, Artificers in DDO, and Rangers in GW2.

    Personally, I think Rangers in GW2 kinda sucked (or maybe I was just playing them wrong) but, in any case, I really loved the idea of exploring and collecting all the pets.

    As much as I like lore-masters (especially the original version as lahnmir said), with all aspects considered such as the mechanics, control, pet variety, formation, etc... I'd cast my vote on AoC's reanimation necro (the pet build), and CoV's Mastermind.

    Both of those feels (or felt, since I don't play much Homecoming) like controlling your own little army, built and honed by yourself for the current encounter and can be changed on the fly.

    Usually I ain't a pet class fan myself, but I've had a lot of fun with those two. Maybe because I liked the Overlord games as well :)

    I wish my games had pet classes. My opinion of FFXIV kind of soured a bit after Shadowbringer's pet change, making them untargetable, so they just felt like minions with some added damage.

    WoW has really cool pets you can tame as a hunter, but a large part of me misses the old pet spec control, where you could tame a pet and change its spec whenever you wanted instead of the game auto-assigning it like it has done sine BfA I believe.

    Why hasn't anyone mentioned Aion's Spiritmaster? Not only do you have up to 5 different choices at any given time, the spirit skills you use are also different based on the pet you have active etc. It's a nice class.

    I don't know if PoE meets the "MMORPG" criteria, but they have a fantastic range of pets. Totems, Spectres, Skeletons, Zombies, Golems, Phantasms... and more. Iirc, I had 77 pets up and running once, in a previous build I had (Famous build, I didn't make it myself).

    WoW's Hunters have to be my favorite because of the taming and gaining of actual "pets." It added so much to the class and trying to get a massive "stable" of pets (maximum numbers were tough).

    The pet control was pretty good, too. Attack, Defend, Follow, Stay were simple commands to execute. Target a foe, command to attack and off they go! If your pet had a "special attack or ability", a mouse click made it happen.

    My first experience with "pets" was through EverQuest 1. Magicians had their elementals, Enchanters had their weapon wielding (dual-wielding at higher levels) pets, Necromancers summoned their skellies with stacks of bone chips, and later on the Beastlords with the Luclin expansion.

    I had not seen EQ mentioned Iselin's post, so my apologies if someone else did a better job than me :)

    I'm more in Scot's band of "not really a pet class player", until WoW's Hunters changed my mind :)

    I have did dabble when Cities of Heroes introduced Masterminds in their Cities of Villains expansion. Prior to that, their Illusion Defenders got uncontrollable pets. It was fun to go through, but they never really caught my fancy :)

    Wizard101 has a "kind of" pet class, but strange. There are spells that allow for pets to partake in fights, but they take one of the 4 battle spots. Wiazrd101 also use "Pokemon" type pets that players can train through specific activities that give players "special abilities", but don't actually partake in fights.

    Overall, I'm not a "pet class player", but I have had fun with some of the MMOs I've played when using their pet class systems, at least for a time :)

    Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.
