The 2 week long New World beta (July 20th, 9:30 AM Pacific - Aug 2nd, 11:59 PM Pacific) is getting close. You can either sign up and hope for the best at
https://www.newworld.com/en-us/ or pre-order from Amazon or Steam.
The beta and game (when it releases on Aug 31st) are only playable on Steam. If you buy it from Amazon they will just email you a Steam key. If you order from Steam, you'll get 2 entries: "New World MMO" and "New World Closed Beta" immediately. Neither is available for DL yet but the Beta client should unlock for preload either tomorrow, Sunday, or Monday. If you pre-order from Amazon before midnight tonight, they will send you a Steam key on Monday 19th. IMO, skip buying it from Amazon and do it through Steam.
There are a lot of servers already announced for the beta with EU, NA-East, NA-West, South America and Australia. They said that they will add more if needed. This is the list of Beta servers:
https://newworldfans.com/articles/new-world-closed-beta-server-list-revealedPlaying the beta for as many hours as you like does not "lock-in" your preorder. If you try it and don't like it you'll still be able to refund at any time before release - no 2 hour limit. It's a risk-free way to "try before you buy."
If you played the beta last August, there have been a lot of changes - very positive ones, IMO - since then. Several new weapons have been added, "expeditions" (5-man repeatable dungeons) are also new and two new types of PvP, the instanced and on-demand 20 v. 20 "Outpost Rush" battleground on an island as well as the open world fort capture battles for the forts that exists in most zones. The two scheduled events that existed last year, the instanced 50 v 50 PvP fight for control of a zone and the instanced mobs vs. 50 player invasions still exist but they are no longer the only things as was the case last summer.
Basic Game Info:
New World in an action-combat PvX MMO with a PvP flagging system that can only be turned on/off in cities (similar to modern WOW.) It started out as a FFA, full loot, PvP large and a bit MMOish survival game but it hasn't been that for a long time. PvP is now 100% optional with no player loot drops on death but it does have good reasons to flag and PvP if you want. (PS: they removed the +XP gain from all sources just for flagging they had last year. You do still get access to some missions with better rewards, including better XP, that you need to flag for but you can't "abuse" the system by flagging, avoiding PvP and just using the XP bonus to level-up faster.)
There are a lot of quests as well as instanced dungeons so it's theme park like in that respect but the open world has a lot of distractions to pull you away from what you thought you were going to do and let you go off, explore and do things your own way. The crafting is simple but has a lot of depth and value - that's probably the part of the game that remained somewhat close to its original survival roots. There are mob drops, chests to loot and gear quest rewards but crafting will still produce the best and most targeted to your specific needs way to gear up.
The game has no starting classes or class skills. Every skill you can use in combat depends on which weapon you have equipped. You can equip 2 at a time and swap between them and each weapon has a skill line with choices of passives and active skills you can spec into. You get points to spend to level your weapons by using them. You can actually use and level up all of the weapons in the game to max eventually if you want.
This does not mean that "classes" don't exist and the game, especially in expeditions, does encourage a trinity system with tank, healer and DPS for PvE or PvP group play. You just have to build your "class" yourself with the weapons and armor you choose to use.
Currently, at least for the beta, the game has a restriction on the number of characters you can create. This is 1 only per server and 2 max for your account. IDK, if that will change for release but this is the way it will be for the upcoming beta.

Subreddits... yes plural. There are 2 main active subreddits currently and no, the second was not started because they hated the first one
Both subs date back to a 2 week period in 2016 when, I assume, the 2nd created didn't know about the first one. They are both active, have about 30k members each and talk about merging every now and then but for now there are 2:
EDIT: they have now merged and the subreddit is now

There are many already but two that are doing videos almost daily and have good content are
Ser Medieval for a lot of basic info but if you want a more detailed focus on PvP and PvE builds I find
Studee very good for that.

@lotrlore or @ShankTheTank Should stream the game and gather members. Would likely help grown the community.

There was also one in The Secret World at launch. It even had an in game T-shirt with this site's logo as I recall.

So we'll be streaming it on Saturday next, but not 100% sure if Shank will be joining us officially as we're still navigating this issue as well.
That said, if people think there is enough interest, I have no problem setting up an MMORPG.com guild once New World officially launches, though.
You can see my sci-fi/WW2 book recommendations.
Even the 2 week beta that happened a year ago, which was also meant as a promotional beta just prior to previous scheduled launch was relatively bug free so I expect the same this time around.

As you can see for me grouping is far too important for players to miss out on!

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

GW2 and FFXIV are about 50GB each, 40 GB doesn't seem too small.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
