How does character naming work?

in New World
Are character names reserved/unique across all servers in New World? Or if a character name you want is taken on one server, you can try to see if it is available on a different one?

    A. Orcasio Ortez
    Geoff Bezos
    Phu KU
    Feminine Guy
    And various others with Numbers and x's randomly in names are taken as well
