Final Fantasy XIV is seeing an upcoming icon changed thanks to some concerns in the community regarding it triggering a lesser-known phobia out there: trypophobia. The phobia itself puts sufferers into a feeling of "fear or disgust of closely-packed holes" according to Healthline, which the original icon had as part of the design.

There is a phobia for almost everything.... seems sorta pointless. How about fear of spiders, snakes, deep water and heights. Or the dreaded fear of the color green, Prasinophobia.

I exect them to immediately address those as well....

But in all seriousness this is a waste of dev. Time.

You mentioned a bunch of actual phobias. I don't know if you are trying to make this some kind of "own" to the devs or something? Humans are randomly generated, in a sense. Of course people are going to be scared of random things. Why not categorize them just like we do with everything else in the world? Just seems kinda simple.

What? He's not trying to "own" the devs. He's saying there are countless numbers of phobias. if the devs spent time making sure every phobia was fixed, they'd have no time to develop the game. Like - being afraid of snakes - well guess what, there are snakes in the game.... lol. You don't see them taking every snake out of the game.

His point is no one cares that 3% of the population suffers from arachnophobia, yet every game has spiders in it. Yet this rare thing we now care about.

I wonder if they fixed this because it's a simple icon change versus going in and changing the appearance of numerous monsters or other vastly more dramatic changes... Probably.

When I was in high school there was this girl that literally couldn't even look at a printed picture of a snake without panicking. Your avatar would probably have sent her over the edge lol. Back then we all thought it was weird and probably BS so my friends got a kick out of showing her pictures of snakes. One day a buddy of mine got the idea to put a snake picture in her personal drawer in art class. She literally had a meltdown and had to be helped to the nurses office. After that none of us laughed about it.

Phobias are real and difficult for the ones facing them. Even though you might not have those same fears; don't understand or think it's funny, it's OK to have compassion for those who do suffer from them.

Apparently somebody cares about trypophobia when it can be addressed by simply changing the icon of a class. It's nothing to take issue with, except for those with trypophilia who will understandably be disappointed.

Changing creatures in the game would be a fair bit more work, what with their animations being based on their form. I'd be happy to see a lot less snakes, but what could they replace existing snakes with that didn't look and move like one anyway.

I don't know how trypophobia works but if those 3 little holes can trigger it then i hope nobody with that condition ever comes close to a tennis racket, a spaggetti strainer, or ever feel the need to grate some cheese.

I would expect they and anyone else that know that cares about them will find a way to accommodate their condition as much as possible if it can not be overcome with desensitization, cognitive behavioural therapy, or some other similar approach.

I don't see why people are going against something like this.

If it helps at least 1 person, why not? The company is spending resources to make sure their playerbase feels safe. Why is that a bad thing? Wtf I just don't understand some people. Of course there are things outside of their control - but if they can do something about some of them, why not?

Also, you guys are trying to rationalize phobias and comparing to other stuff - it doesn't work like that, or it wouldn't be a phobia.

Those that don't live with extreme psychological issues such as phobias tend to be dismissive of them. Even family members are often prone to such.

It is beyond their experience and thus their understanding. The fundamentally irrational nature of phobias doesn't help those suffering from them understand or explain them, so they can often do little to foster empathy for their condition.

Of course, those others will gain an entirely new perspective should they one day be afflicted by an irrational psychological issue that limits their own lives. Ideally they will never have that opportunity, as it is not what one should wish on anyone.

While I would tend to agree with you, you have a very skewed idea as to what "dev time" entails when it comes to filling a hole in an icon.

I could literally do this in less than 30 seconds.

I cannot understand it. I can look at a honeycomb and be fine. But there are certain shapes that just make me constantly think about the image and feel queasy while doing it. It isn't a fear, at least for me, just the sight makes me queasy.

the thing that made me realize I had it was a video of a toad that gives birth through its back. I don't know what it is, I don't find the act gross, but just seeing all the holes in the back drove me crazy. All I could think about was filling the holes with cement or something to make them go away. Not to kill the toad or anything, just so there weren't holes anymore. I know it sounds crazy, and if I didn't have it, I would think the same. "Just holes bro", I get it. I don't understand it either. Edit: The symbol here doesn't bother me at all, but I can understand it bothering people with trypophobia. I don't know how people who are afraid of snakes and spiders react when it is in video games, but I assume most are afraid when it is a physical threat and not just a sight?

It's possible it's psychological and it's possible that something in how your brain is interpreting images is making you queasy.

For me, it's feet. for the most part, looking at feet, especially imperfect feet, makes me slightly nauseous.

I just chalk that up to psychological and move on.

Don't really care about the phobia, we all have things we have issues with cant fix them all but if it helps then cool. I'm not really calling ff14 out in this but just devs in general, they are all so quick so fix trivial things like this but so slow to fix bugs that are around forever. Or performance issues that remain forever.

It is not officially designated as a mental disorder as of yet. However, it is also not dismissed or ignored by psychologists. It tends to be treated with exposure therapy as is typical for phobias.

Seeing as it is currently recognized and treated by professionals, it's absence in DSM-5 shouldn't be seen to suggest it isn't a legitimate issue. The manual has multiple editions because none of them are all-seeing and knowing at the time of their making. They are not and cannot be all-inclusive at any point in time.

In this particular situation it is a small, quick, and easy fix that will ease the discomfort on some of their players while having little to no impact otherwise. Regardless, I am pleasantly surprised they adjusted the icon as many companies would not do something even this trivial to accommodate the few afflicted with this issue.

It's called progress. There's tons of people out there who deal with rare things that are basically forgotten. Just because something is rare doesn't mean there's less value in addressing it. Something as simple as changing an icon isn't a heavy lift but can make the lives of some people trying to enjoy the game a lot easier.
It's easy to be dismissive about this sort of thing when you aren't dealing with it yourself.

Phobias are irrational and often debilitating fears. Imagine you were playing FFXIV for years and you've been otherwise OK but now this icon that you see everywhere is making the experience unbearable for you. It would suck. The fact we're trying, as a society, to be more aware of the things that ail us and make little accommodations like this where we can should be celebrated, not derided.

Even without knowledge of the phobia itself, as an outsider to the problem, I like the new icon changes.
