I miss the simple LFG tool in Everquest. All these group finders are so mechanical and specific. I miss getting randomly invited to some crazy shenanigans that isn’t an endgame dungeon or pvp arena.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
For me it was the classes, combat, crafting and diplomacy from Vanguard Saga of Heroes. From the bloodmage and disciple that healed by dealing dmg, to the tanks that would have reactions skills only appear based on how the fight was going to include rescues. Crafting was reactionary as well, having counter abilities pop up as stuff overheated, etc. Diplomacy was a system where you engaged NPC in a conversation that was like a mini game of cards from your deck of skills. Unfortunately the game was bug ridden and unplayable on the best of rigs.
I really want to echo this.. This game had a lot of core items I enjoy. Randomness of things.. I had rotations. So many new games are set to game pads, it only provides 4 to 5 options. How about not killing a fire dragon with fire.. or a skeleton with a dagger?
Also, I forget which MMO, they start to blend, crafting that has lifetime needs. Your sword breaks down, your weaponsmith makes repair kits, improve kits, fire oil, etc. Clothes need patches, etc.
Lastly diversity of characters.. Wildstar looked awesome. New World looks nice, but I can already see everyone looking the same at 50, especially with faction gear.
I want complex gear progression in a new MMO like Anarchy Online's. Something where you actually have to put in effort and meet requirements other than level. I also like the implant system from AO...
I want to see BoP/BoE's removed, it just compounds anti-social behaviors that plagues a lot of modern MMO's.
Open world group content like AoE mob farming from Anarchy Online or Everquest. And open world rare/boss monsters that aren't merely an event train where half the server chases with no effort.
I also want a very high level cap, level 220 in Anarchy Online wasn't enough, give me the ability to go to 9,999. I want a reason to keep grinding even if it means I get very small returns for leveling up.
Put it in a game like Black Desert Online with a subscription and no cash shop and I'd be happy. I'd be able to have a deep combat system with a complex level of gear progression, open world, while still maintaining some of the best overall graphics on the market for MMO's.
I'm tired of modern MMO's being so minimal effort, not have a complex vertical progression system is boring as your character never feels as though they get stronger. Especially if the game also lowers the player's level to the content (Yes, this is a jab at GW2, it's dreadfully boring...). I've given these horizontal progression games a try over the years and they're just awful.
What he said oh and to add to that, a stronghold system similar to but more fleshed out than the one in neverwinter (a proper tavern for starters would be good) and a death penalty that matters to help promote social play.
Yes, downleveling is stupid. If the game works enough, put in some caps, but I remember helping lowbies in Eq1 it was awesome. Make them needs us for SOW, or intel, or other fun buffs.
I would add eliminate all pvp on PVE servers, except like wow did with Arenas and such.. Choose it as a fun "side" game.. You can create pvp servers, with rp, but stop trying to design games for 2% of the MMORPG population.
