That was a great dungeon, but the first one I went into was Tomb of Mithra (First dungeon in Albion, DAoC) , and I thought that was awesome. Never seen a dungeon before that
I started in Alb. I remember the Tomb. It was low level, pretty chaotic and a bit crowded early on.
Darkness Falls was the first time I really wanted to go into a dungeon and really spoiled me as far as dungeons were concerned. It was huge and open, had it's own merchant system, a crazy range of mob levels that was near impossible to not aggro and was accessible to all three realms. You never knew what was coming, but the exp and loot (early on) was worth it. It's one of fondest memories in the game.
Just the Aheron's Call world and sheer size of it compared to anything else at the time. Not to mention almost everything else about the game.
It mattered if your shield was facing an enemy. Each spot for your armor had its own stats which mattered only for that spot being you could get hit in the head, hands, feet and a few other locations. Not to mention seven damage types for each armor piece.
I was long hooked before one of my favorites earlier dungeon memories. I am sure there were many dungeons before this but I remember this most.
BSD (Black Spawn Den)
Being in there with 12 or more random people back to back trying not to get run over by the Tuskers. No party, just survival and exploration. People dropping left and right! Corpse runs were fantastic!
I loved Black Borrow but i absolutely loved Crystal Caverns in the Eastern Wastes EQ1. Just getting there was fun and having to run in then hope that a roamer orc wasn't waiting on the other side lol.
As a beastlord i had the levitation spell so i used to levi down to the bottom and work from there. It had a dwarf town and a few named in the dungeon plus the music was fantastic, ill never forget the place i spent hours upon hours in the place levelling up.
I also loved lower guk, unrest.
Ah Lower Guk, you know I had so many Skull Shaped Barbute(sp?) SSB's in my bank I couldn't get rid of them, the first time I saw the SSoY drop, the Tank called need and my Ranger was so sad. I always find it funny in those pick up groups that people waited until the super rare item dropped to then inform you of who was priority for the drops.
Also soloing the Flowing Black Silk Sash with my Necro was nerve racking at times, but fun and challenging, dang Charm Undead (can't remember if that was what the spell was called) could break at any time and the spell Feign Death didn't always work.
So many good memories, oh and power-leveling your alts with a level 50 druid friend down there was always fun!

And still how dungeons should be Open World , that adds soo much immersion
Yeah i totally agree, you can't beat open dungeons, Vanguard had some fantastic open dungeons that would span many levels and take days to do. It also had the best open air dungeons ive played in as well.
I loved River Valley, Rahz Inkur, Sands of Sorrow, Coterie Infineum, Skawlra Rock, Ruins of Trengal Keep the list goes on.
Vanguard emu is in pretty decent shape , small community testing if you jump on the discord .. you can play most content up to 35 .. they are still working on stuff after that .. Crafting is also being worked on as well as Diplo .. But ive had a lot of fun with it ..
AC was my first "dungeon" experience but they worked very differently from what I would later come to think of as a dungeon. Dungeons as a separate section of the game, which could have its own rules of engagement, I first really got into those in WoW.
I don't really think dungeons hooked me but raids and PvP gave meaningful activity to end game.

Not MMOs, but it was Dungeons of Dagaroth on the TRS-80, later Bards Tale 1 along with Ultima Underworld on the PC back in the 80s/90s which hooked me on dungeons in RPGs and eventually MMORPGs.

I LOVED the Bards Tale series. I actually play them on occasion. They are incredibly unforgiving.
I fell in love with dungeons through the original Eye if the Beholder. Then, after moving to the Lands of Lore series I ended up in the worlds of Might and Magic and Wizardry. These were worlds without end, filled with dungeons, caves, basements etc. Then I was introduced to these worlds, but online. My npc parties became parties of real people, I never looked back.

Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'

Likewise. Mandate was the best of the M&M series. Still worth the run-thru, when I have a month to spare.

I was a complete and total noob in Freeport roaming around the town and I got a message from someone. First time I interacted with another person in the game. They asked me if I was interested in joining a Befallen group. I didn't know anything about anything, but I still joined. They came and picked me up and I was hooked.
The adventure to the dungeon, the dungeon itself, the mechanics (fear, keys progression, etc), the chill and friendly group mates. It was the start of a lot of things.
Eq1 i started as a barbarian warrior so Blackburrow! There were so many that kept me going, thinking back though after that id have to start going with Karnors castle, city of mist, seb, crystal cavern, That damn spider dungeon with the slippery bridges. Cant forget mistmoore either.. Man there are too many to think of lol but there was always something to do in that game!
If i remember right Charisis?/howling stones was such a lengthy dungeon and giving the time it was released, the scope of it was pretty impressive, kind of like the hole, its an awesome dungeon but often looked over.
Wasn’t the first dungeon, but it was the one that was the most memorable from a design standpoint. Age of Conan’s Sanctum of the Burning Souls. That wasn’t my first mmo either, but to this day I still think it’s the most interesting MMO ever created. The dungeon design was top of the line, bar none. I’ve never played a game since that has had dungeons that intrigue me as much as AoCs.
Back in the day I was searching for modded content for JK2 and stumbled across pre release content for SWG and Eve Online. That's how I discovered MMOs. When SWG released a few months later it was the Krayt Dragon Yards that hooked me into grouping up. Then came other MMO's that had a dungeon run feel to it reminding me of my Arcade days in Gauntlet. Then came my introduction into LOTRO and DDO.
