Why not just put the plans towards a GW3? Why keep wasting time and resources on this? Are people still hinging on what they do with WvW in this game?
They must not be doing well enough to make an entire new game, but are doing just well enough to keep releasing updates for this one. I think everyone would rather ANet throw out this game and rebuild with a better engine and an awful lot of lessons learned, but I guess it will never happen.
As far as the WvW changes go, they are good and overdue ideas. I still won't get my hopes up, as ANet consistently mishandles WvW. It is shocking it took them this long to finally accept the community's request, this is a very old concept people have been asking for since the beginning of the game.
Hopefully it goes well, but this WvW patch will not be enough by itself. The upcoming DX11 update needs to come with massive performance improvements. The community-made wrappers just do not come close to cutting it, and GW2's performance is among the worst of all MMOs I have played (I actually think it is by far the worst of any MMO I have played, but I probably am forgetting some crappy games I only briefly tried).
I hope both the DX11 patch and WvW update go well, because I would love to try out the game again. It is probably the most flawed MMORPG I have ever played (the community is awful, the game engine is not capable of doing anything decently, organized PvE is the worst out of all MMOs I can remember trying, microtransactions are borderline necessary to play, the empty rectangular zones are ugly and uninspired at best - and far worse if you are being honest, and the writing is astonishingly atrocious - by far the worst I have seen in an 'rpg' and among the worst I have seen period) but it also has some of my favorite features (my favorite class in any MMO ever, the original set of classes are genuinely creative and fun, the combo system is awesome and should be adopted by every game, large scale PvP is always fun, the art style is nice, and the public events/map events are a highlight - though not as good as WAR).
IMO all that stuff with directX upgrade, WvW changes and new gameplay elements (fishing LOL) are a few years too late to make them impactful. This game is becoming more and more neuter compared to other current titles or those being in development. I wouldn't be surprised if they milked this cow some more by updating IS regularly and then announced a new project in a few years. But I don't think that seeing the current state fo the game, GW3 would be any good once it comes out anyhoo.
Don't get me wrong - It was a good ride with my first character (mesmer) and I have some cool memories/internet friends from this game, but there's simply no point to returnanymore once You complete everything once/twice, with how static everything around You feels, despite "dynamic events" and bosses almost everywhere. Yuck, this looked alive for the first several times maybe.
No fighting for world's map territories, no proper housing, no proper guild gameplay, no optional open world PvP, no diversity in monster packs and its AI, no noticeable graphics overhauls, especially on vanilla zones. Loads of unnecessary items and currencies. Still no water/air content (yeah, because having air/water mounts isn't enough to make them populare the world there).
Guild Wars 2 has its charm to some extent, but other games just do it much better in many areas. I just wish GW2's combat mechanics and mounts locomotion were transformed to other games, because it's really outstanding.
Why not just put the plans towards a GW3? Why keep wasting time and resources on this? Are people still hinging on what they do with WvW in this game?
I'd rather them keep updating their existing game and giving GW1 an f2p relaunch than to release a GW3. I can't fathom what they could do with another sequel that isn't already covered by their two wildly different games.

Back in 2015, with the launch of Hearth of Thorns, which, truth be told, did really good on their box sales, but was received about as well as a fart in a church, in the following year, due to massive decline in sales, Anet announced the laying off half their staff and canceling of a as still unknown project that was being worked on.
Many, myself included believe that was going to be GW3.
NcSoft pretty much came in, and had to take the reigns of Anet, and redirect the company, due to some very bad decisions by their former directors, which resulted in a current and continual decline of income for GW2.
I do not think that NcSoft will be able to turn the ship around, and think they should renew efforts into making a GW3, but, for now, they have opted to go in the direction of trying to basically save GW2.
As someone who had enjoyed the game for a long time, I wish them the best in their efforts to rekindle what they once had, but I think MO and others did way to much damage to the creditability of GW2 by this point, that going to GW3, will in fact be their best plan.

I wish they would restructure PvE so that ranged builds were a thing. I like so many things about this game but I can't get into a game where every class is a melee DPS and there's zero class fantasy.

Ranged kicked ass in Open World, in both PvP and PvE.

I tried GW2 but I was so lost and didn't know where to go or what to do so my player experience didn't get very far.
um just explore the zone you start in and you will find little hubs of quests. I believe you can see the recommended level of nearby zones to decide where to go next, assuming the story quests don't already lead you there.
Sounds like something I might have liked at launch, when most of the mmo pvp population gave GW2 WvW a chance. Wasn't enough to keep us, at this point we're gearing up to play New World. Just make GW3 and maybe we'll give you another shot Arenanet.

I mainly play spellcasters, Mesmer, Necro, Elementalist, and I only play them as ranged. They rock. I'm not sure what you mean by class fantasy here, each class I play is unique and feel like they have a purpose in that world. They just play very differently from GW1 which did have a lot more in depth class fantasy, but i think it is still present here to a lesser degree.
Man there's a lot of misinformation in this thread. First of all, the layoffs didn't really touch Guild Wars 2, but devs that were on other projects and in some cases hired for those projects, who never worked on Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 isn't doing worse right now than it was in the aftermath of the HoT launch seven years ago. And the game is packed with players. WvW is doing well, not only from my experiences by also according to the devs themselves. It's obviously not as busy as it was at launch but that would be true of most MMOs.
Guild Wars 2 is not an MMO for everyone that's true for sure. It doesn't have vertical progression, which some people hate. They need to keep chasing those higher numbers. It's not raid-centric like the end game in many other MMOs in PvE. In fact, there have been two expansions that neither raised the level cap nor introduced a new tier of gear.
But there's an excitement about the game in game that have continually surprised people returning to the game. Seasons of the Dragons, even though it's replaying old content, offers some of the best rewards any meta achievement has offered to date. The legendary armory only came out recently and though the expansion was delayed till February, there's betas for the elite specs going on, betas for graphical updates, betas for the WvW alliances, all happening this month.
Many companies would have put these last three features in the expansion and added them as features, but Anet is releasing them separately rather than as part of the expansion.
This game does open world better than any game I've played, for me anyway. Nothing has even come close. As a person who never particularly liked traditional end game, this has plenty to do for more casual players.
Those who say it's too late are simply wrong. We get people coming over from WoW or FFXIV sometimes who post on reddit saying things like "I thought this was a dead game" or "I can't believe I waited so long to start this."
It's not for everyone. But for people who are burned out on traditional MMO structures and are looking for something a bit different, this is still a good option.
If I were interested in gear grind, I'd have become a watchmaker

This is mainly spot on, but just a Minor Correction.
GW2 does have Raids as a direct PvE-End game content, and they did put in a new tier of Gear, Legendary Armor, that in PvE, can only be obtained through raids.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
I don't consistently play GW2, but I fire it up every now and then and the game's FAR from dead. That goes for all game modes. So I have no idea where some of these comments are coming from. ArenaNet wouldn't waste their time working on a number of major features and a new expansion that's due next year if the game isn't in a sustainable state.

Said tier being statistically identical to ascended gear. And it can also be obtained through PvP and WvW, so again, that statement is factually inaccurate.

You know you're intellectually dishonest when you avoid the point entirely and attack the other person for being "a dirty hardcore."
Nothing I said was wrong. The "higher tier item" offers you zero objective performance advantage. I don't own a single set of legendary armor and have no horse in that race. I have zero intention of returning to raids at this moment, and my favorite content in the game remains the open world content.
Also, you have the situation in reverse, and the resulting poor context completely changes the message. I was tired of the raiding itself. It felt like a commitment, and commitments burn me out. My group kept raiding, and they're probably better off for having a slot open for a more mechanically skilled player.

Funny, video talked about hardcore PvPer's being overly aggressive and at each other's throats but here we've got two casuals doing it.
I just want developers who intend to implement OW PVP or siege based PvP to make more of an effort than the last minute attempts to garner PvPer support that we've seen in the past. The only inspirations games like ESO and GW2 drew from DAoC was three factions and a bunch of castles/keeps to fight over. If it's not expanded upon, then it'll get stale quick.
You put two similar enough people on opposite sides and that's a recipe for potential aggression.
For my part, I'd love to see them fix WvW. I have very fond memories of Alliance Battles and Fort Aspenwood way back in the day.

and with build templates being a thing now , it does in fact offer an advantage.
And, I am not casual, I have simply made no bones about the fact that I said GW2 was the wrong game to put raids into, and I hope they drown for doing so.
Now, if you will excuse me, I have to get back to sorting my raid gear in DDO. Fucking power creep.

If I were interested in gear grind, I'd have become a watchmaker
GW2 does have Raids as a direct PvE-End game content, and they did put in a new tier of Gear, Legendary Armor, that in PvE, can only be obtained through raids.
My seventeen alternate characters are doing fine without that legendary armor, by the way (and I have the reflexes of a sedated tortoise). Your character(s) would be no less effective than they already were.
Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
And I am well aware you and your guild raided a lot, you talked about it much already, and I also remember that you clearly stated that you loved raids, and that people should just make their own static, and raid if that is what they wanted, and then you explained that when your guild stopped raiding, you made no effort to continue raiding without them even if you loved raids soooooo much, and instead, pretty much left the game.
And it's still a higher Tier item.

Your shtick as the casual supremacist has gotten old, by the way. You're difficult to talk to, and more difficult to like. I'm an easy mode advocate who hates Dark Souls fans on sheer principle and I still find you overbearing, and it has to come down to the hostility with which you approach everyone.
