I'm not opposed to PVP games if it can be avoided while leveling/learning the game. I will pvp when I want to. Just don't force me, and we cool.

It's not though. It's a PvX game with the option to flag for PvP if you want. I was in alpha when  it was a PvP survival game and trust me, it wasn't that good. There is a reason they switched gears.

I was actually enjoying it a good amount yesterday. Once I got to the first real settlement and finished some of the fetch quests, I got to the quest that requires you to find a bunch of crafting materials. This annoyed me a lot so I logged off. I don’t want to be forced to do crafting stuff as part of the main quest when I’m nearly 2 hours in.

Forced Crafting? Now that's a first, I'm right there with you brother, forced PVP maybe, but no way am I putting up with this sort of affront!

I don't know moving forward, but the quests he's talking about are introductions to each crafting bench. You just have to cut 2-4 trees, mine 2-4 stones, and kill some mobs then just craft something simple.

The "forced crafting" is just part of the tutorial, the game uses some quests as a tutorial.  Personally I like the tutorial in this game compared to others, as the tutorial is not obvious its a tutorial hence the "forced crafting".

Takes like 2 minutes to complete that part, and the reward is a bunch of iron so you can get 2nd tier items, which I just sold instead of making, as I made them much earlier.

I agree thou, they should make tutorial quests separate, optional and not dependent on other quests.  With that said, the tutorial is rather short compared to other games so there is that.

What I don't understand about new world, is why they don't offer a server with flagging disabled, this way people who want a PVP server could have one.  The code is already built in.

This way all the PVPers would have the PVP game they want and alot less complaining.

Cant say its because they don't have manpower, because its already in the game, all they have to do is disable the flags.  It would take like 5 minutes to program.

It irritates me these games force everyone to play on one server.  20 years ago games had different servers for different playstyles, now they shove all the square pegs into round holes.  No concept of customer service at all.

Crafting is much more integrated into the game than just a couple of tutorial quests. The town board quests which are one of the 3 main sources of quests, XP and your territory standing have a lot of crafting or gathering. It's a core component of the game play loop and never really goes away,

Having said that, I laughed at the concept of "forced crafting" especially in an MMO with strong survival game roots, What next? Forced WASD? Forced log-in? :)

I do not believe it will be DOA. It will have maybe a solid month of being the top streamed game then it will fizzle. The game launches way to close to other big launches (ie: Battlefield 2042). Even if it is not the same target audience it won't matter.

Giving into the loud PVE community from Alpha 1 was a massive mistake. The feedback was bias from the start as the new player experience didn't exist. And the end result will help tank the game. The PVE community will turn on AGS in a heart beat. I wouldn't even be shocked if AGS built an algorithm to build & write the quest lines for them.

I will give kudos however to the devs. The game is gorgeous. I wish it wasn't ran into the ground by a bunch of money hungry executives however.

Even if PVE was the core of the game, what they took away from Alpha 1 is night and day. People used to be able to build bases however they'd like. They didn't have pre-built bases. There was so much more freedom in terms of social, political, skill & just fun.

It was eve online with swords and given the longevity of Eve Online that should of been their guide.

The theme-park styled MMO is overdone often overhyped and if history is a guide.... almost always fails. And this game is worse as it was NEVER meant to be a PVE focused game.

Amazaon has got more money than god so if they want the game to be good they can do it,i played a few hours beta and its not bad i love the crafting system thats done perfectly,if they have loads of dungeons with a dungeonfinder later ill play it,prised right like 32 US dollars for South-Africa so not to bad.

Now there's the key, if they want to support the game they can afford to do so, but will they is the real question.

Microsoft shut down Earth and Beyond, sold off Vanguard and probably closed some others after losing the will to stay in the MMO space back in the day yet they certainly had more than enough money to try a little harder.

What I question right now is the monetization model doesn't seem right, it doesn't maximize revenue earning enough to really incentivize continued long term development and I can't see Amazon going the No Man's Sky route of buy once, never pay again.

I suspect it's going to be a bait and switch trap where as time passes players will be increasingly offered things to purchase but we'll see how things go.

Well...let's be fair about Vanguard. They were sold one bill of good by Brad McQuaid, and what they had at the time was a steaming pile of trash that wasn't even close to what it was pitched to them as. (Remember the F-15 articles and interviews with the dev's, and members of the team?) Microsoft getting out really allowed that game to be "finished", or else it likely would have been another Star Citizen, development ongoing eternally.

If that was Microsoft's experience in MMO's, then I can't blame them of being nervous about the genre. (Although Earth and Beyond was pretty damn cool) With the shift in New World, I see Amazon as being flexible and listening to feedback, although that's not always a win. I'm just not sure what level of commitment they really have or how important it is to them if it doesn't sell well off the bat, or starts bleeding dollars.

I found it boring as well and didn't play long but I think for me it had more to do with a tired genre, uninspired gameplay, and no controller support more than anything else.

i gave it a shot though, just no hook.

It's similar to, say, the Dark Souls games where players ask "why don't they just put in difficulty settings so that other people can enjoy them ...."

And it probably has something to do with the experience they want to offer. Not to mention the audience they want to cater to.

Also, how many more resources will it take to cater to two completely different servers and eventually to two completely different playstyles?

Who knows, maybe if New World is a giant runaway success they'll make it but it seems to me that they are just interested in concentrating on a specific set of players and consolidating their playerbase.

All these concerns can be solved with one commodity we have a lot of ...time. As the game matures it will have more content.

It has a lot more meat on its bones than I expected, and they are taking a more sandboxy approach to things so I am excited to see how it develops from here.

The combat is not my cup of tea, still feels a bit clunky imo but it's.....very serviceable? Don't wanna say "good" but it's also more than just "okay".

When you start the game it would have you think that the intention is for you to craft all your own everything ala a survival game, but what you find in practice (at least in the betas) is that you get enough money from other sources that you can just buy your gear/ammo from the trading post if you don't want to craft it.

I probably won't have enough time to reach level 25 and try the dungeon this weekend but those look promising as well.

What is considered 'enough content at launch' by today's standards? Because stuff like raids and such are usually around a month post launch. I think the game has a lot of potential and I like the whole building up different builds on the same character aspect of the game, so for me its worth the $40 buy in. I just want to reserve my "this is dead" judgments until they've had around a month or so of release time (assuming they do not delay again).

Fair enough.  I'm trying to be optimistic about it. I quite enjoyed the betas, but I'm also concerned about both the questing quality and the size of the world in general. Both were pretty lacking.

I hope actually that they expand on the idea of dynamic world events, rather than pouring too much effort into normal quests.  The dynamic, chaining map events of GW2 or even Rift are so much more interesting than old school questing.  I think they have the beginnings of this in New World, but it needs more depth.

Still, a lot of MMOs which are now my go-to games took years to build up enough content to really sustain my interest long term. Hopefully the New World team sticks to it and expands on the good start they have.

Level 23 or 24 is good enough for that first expedition. I was 24 when I did my first one yesterday. Ran it a second time for a couple of quests I had missed my first time around. They're fun and the loot drops are outstanding.
