Gratefully I picked to play offline . I am aware that the characters aren't saved on their database but I was not keen on not having access when their servers were down. I do think that having to log onto Battlenet each day to play offline a little onerous. I wish I could just play without having to log onto Battlenet first.

You can. I blocked it from accessing the internet. The only thing it won't do is update, so you have to unblock it to allow it to update if you wish.

It was easy to allow nostalgia allow me to gloss over how brutal the early progression is for most classes in Diablo 2:R. When I lost a few hours of play progress in one of the earlier hiccups I decided it wasn't the game for me and got a refund. I do hope Blizzard works this out as the graphics overhaul, controller support (which is really fantastic), and some minor QoL updates make this the definitive online multiplayer version to play.
