The Lost Ark closed technical beta has come to an end. While Kevin's initial impressions haven't changed much, it has left him wondering where this MMORPG with ARPG roots fits into the existing offerings already available. Did Smilegate RPG and Amazon Games make the right decision delaying its release until early 2022? Read on to find out about his concerns.

    Well short answer is yes.

The translation still needs a pass from the normal questing text, missing voice overs still. Normal translation especially stuff like explaining items, skills, stats, etc... needs a lot of contextualization work, legit the translation can confuse the hell out of you, leading to rougher time early on to understand all the nuances of the game mechanics.

A lot of UI bugs (such as text cutoffs due to translations being longer than the UI elements). A noticeable number of bugs that need to be addressed still.

What the beta shown is that this needs more time. On top of that an enormous amount of feedback from the beta that needs to be mediated with SmileGate itself if any there is any chance for some of the main pet peeves people had during beta are to be addressed before launch.

Technically? Yes. Morally? Most games release in a much worse state, so, again, yes.

I think New World well emphasized the risks of launching too soon. I recall some people disagreeing with the one month delay right before launch who claimed the game was fine as is, which clearly wasn't the case.

Also makes no sense to release another competitor for people's money too closely.

I would not have been against an "early access" release. The experience was good enough for what I have experienced, and left me slightly frustrated to not have been able to continue it.

Well, at the same time, it is not like my game list is empty. I just started Mass Effect LE. I never finished the 1st opus back in the days, and I am having a blast.

So, Lost Ark can definitively wait...

That depends on what they use the extra time to do.  Fix the control scheme so as to make the game playable?  Definitely worth it.  Anything else?  Doesn't matter if the game still launches in an unplayable state.

Yes, this reminds me of Marvel Heroes; which I miss. Also on the topic of localization, the card collection tutorial plays in Korean as well, and I'm sure there is lots more hidden tutorials like this in Korean as well.

I'm also glad they didn't do an early access, I hate investing time only for a wipe. There is still some work to do and I think it's OK it's delayed for now as some people such as myself will probably be caught up in Endwalker for a few months.

Even though ffxiv will probably pull me back a bit, I still purchased a platinum pack as this game will be my main daily dungeon grinder MMO. Another thing, I think they should open up more binding customization make the game more accessible from a ADA standpoint.

What are your issues? I've been playing for nearly 100 hours and got no issues with the controls, or anything else for that msttwe. The game is amazing and seems rock solid. Also runs flawlessly on my Ryzen/Radeon rig.

The only thing I've noticed are some translations and missing voice acting.

People often project their personal limitations or preferences on the gaming audience as a whole which is rarely representative of the majority.

Clearly the game's controls are "playable", at least for those capable of adapting to them.

Huh, I figured Amazon delayed release so it didn't detract from New World. I didn't realise there were still things to do

Judging by New World's release state, they delayed the wrong game.

Unless you didn't pay attention to the game or forums at all somehow, yes it needs the time. I can't imagine how someone didn't notice anything unless they had their eyes closed and skipped everything and went Max speed.

This is why when I read people saying "it was fine for me" should be ignored. You're anecdotal perfect experience is noted, but worthless.

After I remapped all my skills to numbers and all my potion bars to letters it was easier for me. I did hate that I couldn't map to shift key as that would have made it a lot better. I would have just shift keyed all the potions and such. I can't see them changing anything with the control really other than maybe adding the shift key. I use a naga mouse though to play so almost everything is on my mouse.

Overall the game was in a very playable state as it was. Some things like not having shift keybind sucked, but for the most part after getting everything remapped to what I liked it became pretty straight forward. To be honest though I don't feel like they delayed the game to work on a lot of things. I think they delayed because they didn't want to release the same time as other things. I have a feeling Amazon had a lot to do with delaying since they are the publishers.

It was definitely in a good enough state to release and patch post launch.

Gameplay-wise it should definitely be "ready to launch", considering it's been out for about three years in Korea now. Hopefully they are doing much more than just translations with the localisation, especially in regards to the cashstore, considering Asian online games are usually filled with P2W elements, with stat boosting pets and other cosmetics, as well as things like rental mounts, and breakable gear upgrade gambling scrolls and such.

Anyways think I am perhaps the only one around who doesn't get the hype for this? Have tried a few of these localised F2P Korean MMOs in the past, and have never gotten very far with them. Cultural differences too big for me maybe, but their cashstores, the character models, the art styles, the camera and UI... they all feel a bit off and rubs me the wrong way.
  • KratierKratier Member RarePosts: 626
skimmed your article and its just a few mentions of p2w typical lazy western commentary about a new asian game.

real problems are the publisher's intent filled decisions to purposefully make the game worse than other regions.
auto moderation "tools" which will ban anyone at any time, no human element at all.
anti cheat software that ruins performance, makes the game take forever to load, and unplayable for some
hatchet job to all cosmetics in the game for censorship reasons.
The publisher is just localizing, and every decision they made has made the game worse.

As for all the paltry excuses for a delay, did you see the state new world launched in? lol

Except that the game will release most likely in the current state of latest beta build with the delay being there just for "New World reasons" (which should have launched in like 2023 for a hope to be a long term success, with LA launching the day after they had the publishing rights).

Mark my words: there will be absolutely no change/improvement to current "amazon build of LA" prior to launch, regardless of how many times the game gets delayed.

If the developers think it should be delayed there should never be a question in anyone's mind, delay it! There are so many pressures that make games release too early, so i always trust a delay decision, do you remember when players were unhappy that NW got put back from launching last year?

I take on board that this may have been to distance the game from NW, but we shall see, I am sure players we be able to say if there are no noticeable differences. For me the article has confirmed what I thought previously, wait until launch to get an idea of what the cash shop is like and see some reviews.

The gameplay seemed solid but the cash shop / premium sub option really puts me off. All the MTX junk just kinda felt in my face and while it may not be p2w(I don't know if it is or not); it certainly makes you do alot of research to figure that out. Personally I find that if the monetization of a game is too convoluted that the game is worse as a result and in my experience this has ALWAYS been the case.
  • theGnadetheGnade Member UncommonPosts: 147
New World release date was spot on, whether the game was in state of release or not. The thing with New World was that it came with "buy in". So it doesn't matter if player keep playing NW on second month or not, they already got your money. So as long as it sells on release date it has filled it's goal. If NW was release later sure the game would be more polished, but remember if NW was fully polished the game would be still mediocre at best, because dungeons and whole gameplay loop is still boring. So if they released it later on time when you have FF expansion coming out, Lost Ark being released and Sleeping Giant WoW waking up, they would never sold as much as they did now, even with polished NW.

they made a mistake not releasing it sooner , there is tons of content at 50 for weeks until they iron out the small issues.

wondering if they decided a date already....maybe Feb at best...if they wait until march...ugh

I was very happy with the state of the game of the Closed Beta, Overall Story and Dungeons got better as you progressed imo. Bummed I have to wait for March tbh, but I think its ultimately to give them Time For New World tweaks, unfortunately.
