It's like Scorch has forgotten the little diagram he posted earlier, showing that many weapons can fill multiple roles.
"When the Warrior wields his Sword and Shield What Class/Role is he filling ______?"
Well, there is a DPS tree for sword and board as well as tanking, so you tell me.
Sword and shield are also not the only weapons that have taunt abilities. What role is the guy with the 2 handed warhammer? The answer might surprise you.
If you have a magic sword that can shoot fireballs are you ranged or magic?
The only difference would be whether it used mana or intelligence or stamina or something.
Which in the end are all just labels. If you look at the numbers and the code, it all looks the same. Everything else is pure entertainment which is purely subjective.
Imho
Really .. you guys kill me..
If you have Sword that shoots fireballs and you use it to shoot Fireballs ..
1. it would no longer be a sword .. Just a Vessel that shoots fireballs ..
Becasue we all know a Sword ...a weapon with a long metal blade and a hilt with a hand guard, used for thrusting or striking..
2. So a sword that is now just a Vessel to shoot fireballs , would be or course Magic .. Just like the Wand that shoots Fireballs , the wand is just the vessel as the sword is in your example ..

Thanks for making my point
The point is you would be a DPS /period
The point is that it is a useless argument
btw: In NW you can be everything , so in my book that means a classless character.
edit: and when I say that I’m not commenting on quality.

Classless Character Okay ..
Classless System .... No Way ..
From Mike Willette Head of New World Dev at Amazon .. on Amirine
"Balancing at such a scale is always a challenge! But its very fun to
dive deep into the mechanics of a design. All of our enemies have unique
strengths and weaknesses to weapons and damage types. Bosses also have
an additional layer of mechanics as they have shifts in mechanics at
different stages of the boss fight. Countless hours of play testing are
always involved across multiple teams to drive in on the fun. For Boss
fights in particular, we recommend first running the experience with the
trinity of a tank, healer, and DPS to learn the mechanics before
experimenting with mixed builds.
What NW is basically boils down to a Job system ..
A variation of the Class and Level System where instead of a character being locked into a single class for the
entire game, the player is free to switch between distinct classes
("jobs") at his leisure, to adapt his character or party to different
situations as the game progresses.

I grew up with the video game industry. A tank was a tank because you adorned yourself with heavy armour just like a tank.
Now over the years in order to make things sound important and technical involving knowledge and wisdom we’ve attached all kinds of attributes, here and there and everywhere.
In the end it’s the same thing.
A bigger menu of skills is not needed. It’s only of entertainment value and that doesn’t say that your wrong in your criticism.
I think you are confusing roles with classes Bdo for example has 25 classes but they all have one role dps
Lol confused
Semantics Role/Class is weak approach at best
My Role is a Tank ... True
A Tank is a Class ... True
Does Role = Class .... True
or
You could just fill in the blank honestly ... Or avoid it , the later is telling
One would also assume that when you describe both as class and role in your own description you would understand they are the same
I'm a Warrior in WOW, I pick up a two handed sword I'm DPS, I pick up a staff I'm a healer
Your logic about roles vs classes breaks down when comparing NW to a game which has actual classes.
In games with true classes there will some which are pure, no matter how one specs a Theurgist in DAOC, no matter what weapon you equip, it can never, ever be a tank or healer.
Of course there are hybrid classes but often groups won't even take them with as they aren't as effective in their designated role.
As I understand things, in NW, a player can switch between all three roles if they wish, and even Respec their attributes so they are at maximum effectiveness at any or all roles.
So yes, NW is classless by most definitions.
The real measure of a person is if they can withdraw gracefully after losing the contest... Hmmm...
More semantics , you should know better ..
Fill in the blanks plz ..
When i wield a Life Staff in New World my class is ______
When i wield a Musket in New World my class is _____
When i wield a Sword and Shield in New World my class is______
Now im going to back in game and watch the Chat Spam ..
" Tank LFG Depths"
" Healer and DPS need Tank for Amirine"
" Amirine group needs Healer and GTG"
" Depths group looking for Tank "
If you seen my countless arguments on this site before over semantics (what is P2W really) than you know I'm a champion for the concept that "words matter."
Class does not have the same meaning as role, simple as that.
Using a similar technique to yours
Warrior LFG Depths - possibly as a tank, or DPS, but never a healer
Druid and Warlock need Paladin for dungeon
Which one is the healer, DPS, or tank? Druid or Paladin for heals, Warlock, never, and unlikely as a tank, yet both Druid and Pally could. Their classes limit them to certain roles which can never be changed regardless what weapons they wield.
Is anyone in NW a specific class? Are they stuck or limited in what role their class can play in a dungeon?
When players in NW advertising themselves as a tank or healer, they are stating what role they prefer to play, not what role (s) their class limits them to.
Today a healer, tomorrow they tank, the next day DPS, rinse and repeat.
As for UO, everyone knows you just wear heavy armor, pick up a sword, and run as a Mage Tank, right?
At one time, this actually was true, until they made changes.
Omg, thank you so much for posting this @Kyleran , my brain was on the verge of imploding after reading page after page of Scorchy showing us in excruciating detail that he doesn't understand the difference between classes and roles.

After testing it in Beta I didn't think I'd end up playing. I jumped in at the 2 week mark because.... launch is always a mess.
Right now I use it to relax so I don't mind the overly simple and repetitive quests. I'm also kind of fascinated with the bow and waste time practicing with it on low level MOBs. I'm more interested in being able to learn how to dodge/roll and get accurate with the bow than I am with the end game. It will take me months to reach the level cap -- if ever.
I also like to look through the ruins for bits of lore.
I'm a pretty casual player who likes to see the occasional fight break out in the wilds or hear someone shooting in the distance without necessarily being involved myself.
Part of the reason I jumped in early is to collect the Prime rewards (1) and if the game becomes a roaring success in 3 years I want to be able to say I was in at beta - waving that around like a dirty diaper because I'm petty that way.
It could end up being great or fail miserably. I was in Shadowbane so.... yeah, I can probably handle it.

I dunno... the honeymoon wore off kinda quick for me. I don't have time for the grind anymore and honestly the lack of variety is getting old. The story is disjointed and uninteresting... ah well, I'm glad y'all getting some enjoyment out of it.

One of the main topics right after the great PvE switcharoo in alpha was the honeymoon phase.
In NW it ends somewhere at around level 30 for most of the people according to many threads about this in the forum. Now life I would bet it is a bit higher as way more people are trying to rush.
At some point in time the "new" effect wears of and people tend to see the actual quality of the content which is not really good at PvE (imho this is pretty clear as the PvE content wasn't the main focus until late in development. It is just a difference if a game was designed with PvE in mind like Pantheon or not. So I'm totally fine with this and didn't expect it to be otherwise) This also lead to the "non territory related" open PvP part of the game to become worse than it was before. (Let's face it. For a PvP player the opt-out is the worst level directly after no PvP at all. There are other ideas to e.g. forced PvP in enemy territory, special open PvP zones, and so on)
Who will stay? 1. People how like the sandbox approach for the game. 2. Like to play the territory game
3. A few people of each other play type who either just bought the game or are just enjoying it even if it is not the best at everything and just like the game. 4. People who are socially bound to the game (friends, guild,...)
So absolutely normal behavior atm. Let's wait 1-2 years and see how it evolved.
The game feels soulless and VERY repetitive. I guess that's enough for some people since everyone is hungry for an MMORPG to play.
I remember very similar talks around here about Archage too. Sandbox MMOs get the older crowd going big time. This one is no different.
It's pretty for sure but at its core, it's Runescape in a Greedfall skin. Again some people don't mind doing the same grind thing over and over. Not I.. a little grind is fine but your whole game cant be a grind fest.
Personally, I also think the story is bland and that's important to feeling immersed in any MMO. I stopped caring about what the story was very quick and just got sucked into the grind-fest. it's stale.
I don't want it to do badly... I actually think it has the potential to be good if handled correctly it's just not very good currently.
But again, it scratches the itch for some people, and thats good I'm always on the side of more games is better, but How long until the itch is over?

I can see that this thread agreed like moldy cheese. I guess I was right about NW being a dumpster fire. Only less than 2 months in, it's already peaking at under 200k. I don't even care to list all of the reasons people are leaving it. Jean luc Picard... lol @ you.
