This is a good interview, one it seems we have been waiting for a long time but it has only actually been 9 weeks or so. The game director seems to have a head on his shoulders and realises this is going to be a long haul to fix.

"Server transfer: These initially were advertised as a way for players to join their friends who might have stranded thanks to server queues. However, they have left a multitude of dead servers in their wake."

Transfers and mergers create problems as well as solve them, we have known this since dot and the problems are nigh on unavoidable. Good to see that's being recognised here but it was blindly obvious this would not go smoothly.

While I understand the anger of those who pitched in and did not get what they wanted; well people pay for early access (it is beyond me why they do that) and that's what you got here. Give it a year and it may well be a MMO I will dive into.

I think it was a trash interview - not that the interviewer did poorly - but the answers are trash.

Just standard, run of the mill, PR fluff replies. It's what I've grown to expect from studio head interviews though.

As to what was reported when...

If the dupes and exploits that came to light in the first couple of months were known before release I never saw those reports and I was pretty plugged in to NW stuff on reddit and elsewhere for a full year prior to release. Never saw them.

That's not to say that the exploits were not there and found prior to release but the info was not widely shared as far as I can tell. Dupers and exploiters were likely keeping them in their back pockets to use after release.

Their public "Bugs AND EXPLOITS" reporting official forum is what caused them to spread like wildfire. How anyone could think that reporting exploits publicly was a good thing I'll never understand lol.

They're currently being more cautious and ask for exploits to be reported by PM but a lot are still reported publicly with instructions.

Predictable and pointless pablum, but then I've always believed that actions speak louder than worlds, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The problem with them "not knowing about dups".  Simple monitoring is all it would have taken to see them minutes after they happen.  All you have to do is have a simple log that has any individual getting any large quantity of anything.  Have flag a dev at say 50k gold is transferred or 500 totems or whatever.  Sure someone duping 1 item could get through but these large scale exploits should all have had notices attached and people banned immediately.

You could even have it calculate total transfers by an individual over a set period say 24hrs.  Anything hitting a specified limit would flag a notice.  This is just basic database management that any database programmer could set up in an hour.

If the devs are claiming they never put this system in because they had no clue anyone would ever try to dup in their game, this just points to incompetence.

I participated in several New World alphas, going back to 2018. I can tell you that this game had various duping bugs and exploits throughout most of the alpha phase. In fact at one point, there was talk of banning some alpha testers for using item duping exploits. Though I don't know if they ever did, as the offenders argued (maybe rightfully) that they were just testing the and looking for bugs, as part of the alpha process. I still play this game. I hope they can get a handle on some of these issues... but this is by no means a new issue.

Lane: "We aren't ready to share our roadmap yet"
Stop LYING! You don't have one, you are litterally making it up as you go. You can easily tell given the ungodly bad nerf/buffs & then the crafting & expertise change.

"Lane: We’ve come a long way in the past year and I think our players see that...." No you have NOT!. If anything you've gone backwards....literally! You have removed rewards, perks and various elements of the game because they are broken, being abused by bots and you don't know how, when, or if you can address it. You've promised server transfers, then removed them, then added them again. The decision makers have NO IDEA what they are doing. And I am not just referring to the endless amount of bugs, exploits or glitches. I am referring to the patches they are releasing to slow progression royally screwing any new player who wants to start playing. In any other MMO they would speed up progression for new players to try and form a maintainable population. In New World it is the exact opposite.

I have ZERO hope for this game. And any fanboy that defends it is only hurting themselves.

You need creative experience devs that think like a duper to catch dupers.

    Which Amazon clearly has none.

    1 dupe bug, understandable.
Multiple dupe bugs? Please just move on.

I draw the line at CLIENT authoritative mmo.
Seriously what kind of dim wit will allow the slightest client authorativeness on a competitive PVP mmo.

I think we need a bit of realism on what we can expect an interview to achieve, if you are looking for Watergate like revelations simply because the game has big issues that's not going to happen. You will get PR speak, they all do that, for me the important parts were the recognition of how long it will take and the areas they need to look at, which we got because of the questions which Joseph chose to ask.

Did they tell some porkies about the dupes, maybe hard to be sure. I remember us questioning the client authoritative MMO when we heard about that, they have had big missteps. I agree that their past performance does not bode well, I just don't think it bodes that disastrously either. They need to keep their nerve and have belief in their vision, that's the part I don't think we can be sure of until early next year.

Well exactly. Its not like the guy is going to release a video of himself being zapped in the wedding tackle by an intern holding a cattle prod, or commit ritual seppuku to make amends. People like to say talk is cheap. In my experience I've found talk can be very expensive. So they can spout whatever flowery nonsense they want and it won't mean bupkis. Its going to take action to prove they can dig themselves out of the deep hole they are currently in. And that's going to take time.

I'm curious who on the team has worked on previous MMOs, and how much say they have in the design/development. From the types of mistakes that are being made, this seems like it's everyone's first rodeo.

Fyi - The overall foundation for item duping was same in beta... lagging your internet.  2021 and an MMORPG doesn't know this by now?  Guy is full of something.

I know it looks that way but studios are often pushed into making the same mistakes, the classic I suppose is bringing the game or a dlc out too early. They know the issues but everything from shareholders to their marketing departments advertising schedule says now! That said I would like to know myself, what's happened has to make you wonder.

Sure it is common for game to lose players after release, but no good game has lost 90% of its playerbase on few weeks. Maybe not even decent game has lost that many. Answer are garbage. Man up and say that things aren't as we would like them to be.

Most of the answers are about doing better in the future topped off with a great deal of whipped cream and sprinkles.

I think it is fair to give an example:

This is difficult and we’ve recently talked a lot about it internally. The thing is, we didn’t know about the exploit and dupe issues until after our launch, so a delay would likely not have helped.

Several people in the community claimed the duplication bugs were reported before launch.

Also, for all of his talk of planning many of the changes seem almost random.

I wish the guy luck, but come on already.

Now, if duplication bugs were NOT reported before launch that made it to production then that would do a great deal to bolster his credibility, IMHO. I'm willing to admit I could be mis-informed, but as it stands right now, it appears this fellow isn't truthful.  I'll be happy to apologize if I'm wrong.

An interview that would have actually meant something would be short.

Sorry no time to conduct an interview. We screwed up and we're trying to fix that, so now back to work I go.
  • Jaguaratron1Jaguaratron1 Member UncommonPosts: 299
    Nonsensical PR drivel

"we are listening and trying to fix bugs"

Literally nothing else, they wont offer a roadmap because they will need to dump any "future" content the next time they screw up worse than normal to try and pacify the customers.

over 80% of server at 20% or less capacity

      50% under 10% capacity

      many under 5% capacity

his que SS is a convenient cherry pick of propaganda, and without a proper time stamp we have no idea when that shot was even taken.
