Maybe that is how you do game development. Allow someone else to eat all the upfront costs/bad reputation/etc. and then come in for the fire sale and pick up a bargain.
Fix all the stupid shit and turn a profit?
I look forward to their next purchases: New World, Star Citizen.
Amazon has more than enough money to keep New World going if they want to. So does RSI at this point.
Are you kidding. Amazon is notorious for developing very expensive games, launching them, and closing them after 1 month becuse they "underperformed".
In fact New World is last game they are keeping alive, and suprisingly still did not close...
I feel like its coming though. Soon. I expect by April for Amazon to cancel New World. Game is down to 100k daily users and as of right now is only being played by 60k
They will never shut down NW. NW got too big of spotlight to just shut it down and for big company shutting game down will not be good. It would put them into light as if they can't build things. Look at Bethesda. They kept F76 going even with few thousand players. Ubisoft kept their FH going. And for NW they don't even need that much of players. They can just cut servers down and merge players. As long as they got 1 server worth of players it makes no different from player perspective if there are 100 server or 1 server. Ofc from business pov the story is different. But amazon is so big they can accept the loss and keeping it going, rather than making consumers distrust in company. And my money is on that these days there many people who have low standards and find fun from simple things and those people will be the playerbase of NW, just like F76 has its playerbase made of certain people. But without reworks NW will never compete with MMORPG titans.

Have to take issue with the hubris of thinking that just because some folks enjoy NW or FO76 that they have low standards or find fun in simple things.

World Record for game flopping so bad it gets sold to recoup some losses?
What losses? Aren't this guys got donations ( kickstarter ) to ..make and "complete" the game?
There are no losses for them.

@Lobotomist great reply regarding Amazon's financial resources. You obviously didn't read my comment, that or you never learned reading comprehension skills. Your lack of punctuation and bad spelling also leave a lot to be desired.
Glad you can track Amazon's game release and cancellation history. Still doesn't invalidate my claim that they have the financial resources to keep NW running if they want to - which is all I ever claimed.
Should spend more time studying elementary school level fundamentals and less time misconstruing sentiments on mmorpg.com
Only one reason artcraft sold Crowfall and that's so it's not liable for any damages/refunds, I can bet the new studio will run the servers for a few months to make it look legit even update the game here and there but it will be shut down nonetheless.

Well Fallout 76 "just works" *strangling someone mime*. Also I'm not sure why you equate people enjoying simple things as having low standards. Honestly nothing to do with the gaming discussion, It just seems a rather bleak outlook on life
Only one reason artcraft sold Crowfall and that's so it's not liable for any damages/refunds, I can bet the new studio will run the servers for a few months to make it look legit even update the game here and there but it will be shut down nonetheless.
No. Crowfall is complete enough game and close enough to what was promised that they will avoid having to give refunds simply by keeping the servers online until people's subscriptions run out.
Whatever the reason behind this sale, it was not done to avoid paying refunds.

I don't know about all that - look at what happened with Darkfall, several times over.
Seems as if this small mobile (card) game maker has been bailing out several games this year.
"So, who are Monumental? They're a small mobile game team based in Austin, Texas, who have 3 games under their belt: Looty Dungeon, Little Alchemist, and Storm Wars, the latter two of which are in the Card Game genre. We'll have to wait and see what they do with Mythgard."
"Mythgard just posted a very interesting and exciting announcement! The rights for the game will be transferred to Monumental Games, who will continue development on the game. This news comes to us just a little over 3 months after it was announced the game was going into maintenance mode following money problems for Rhino Games"

Amazon has more than enough money to keep New World going if they want to. So does RSI at this point. ArtCraft def did not...
RSI, ACE and apparently Monumental are all Austin based companies. Richard Garriot's SOTA Portalarium studio was also Austin based. Lots of bad MMOs / vaporware coming out of Austin lately
But yeah, after researching Monumental's background the future isn't very promising. The games they have on their catalogue have also been acquired from previous studios and even those games haven't had anything done to them after acquisition. I know planning & development can take time but not sure what their strategy currently is. They seemed to only be buying dying games for cheap and then... not doing anything with them? Odd.
However they could recover if they do the designs right, part of the issue right now is how the game is strictly "Instance Based" and constant resets, instead the game should have a campaign designed around "Open World" without resets similar to Dark Fall, which is part of the reason of it's failure a lot of people I know played we got burned out on it.
Great game though, but needs better development for making PVP fun.
Also lets not forget about New World being a complete flop this year, World is good graphics quality but character models being some of the worst customization, and over-all PVP / Gameplay still needs fix itself inluding invasions that are instanced with no reload animations, no repair hammers just repair menu and reload menu makes no sense.
Only one reason artcraft sold Crowfall and that's so it's not liable for any damages/refunds, I can bet the new studio will run the servers for a few months to make it look legit even update the game here and there but it will be shut down nonetheless.
Either that or they close Artcraft to retire the investor debt while the game has a chance to improve and grow.

ArtCraft spend years making Crowfall and the result was not a cohesive and fluid game but more a mish-mash of completely different systems and mechanics smashed together into a disjointed and unintuitive "game"
Unfortunately for Crowfall and the Kickstarter backers, ArtCraft forgot one vital piece to game making... they forgot to include the FUN! Crowfall was far and away the most boing MMORPG I have ever tried to play. As stated, the game was a Frankenstein monster of different systems and mechanics that did not fit well together. Playing the game felt more like a series of unrelated tasks than an actual immersive MMORPG.
ArtCraft made a Frankenstein monster of an MMORPG, they just forgot to put in the heart.
Gonna have to agree with you on this one. In Beta, it was in fact a somewhat fun game, and somehow they managed, though development, to make the game boring as hell by the time it went live.
I gotta admit, I am little impressed they managed to fuck that up.. not happy.. but impressed, like how some people end up getting their car stuck up a tree kind of impressed.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
So CF is going to be turned into a mobile game and who knows what will happen the the PC version.
Can I make a suggestion for the site, which they may already be well aware of. Obviously every studio wants you to go through their "PR contact" but doing that you will hardly ever find anything out. Take them out for lunch and put some wine down them, I found that always works wonders.
I completely understand the skepticism; it's 100% fair and warranted. We have a lot to prove and my enthusiasm for Crowfall and the team only goes so far.
We love the game and plan on investing time, money and love to make it better. Oh, and we have no plans for a mobile version.

that would be tencent probably
new world and star citizen have no appeal to eastern audiences.

Is there a deeper reason for this?
