Swedish video game company Embracer Group, which added Gearbox Software to its portfolio early this year, has announced a series of acquisitions today. Among them is Perfect World Entertainment, which also owned Cryptic Studios. Perfect World and Cryptic Studios will remain independent studios but operate under Gearbox' publishing division going forward.

As someone who actually plays Champions Online, I'm interested to see where this goes.

PWE really crapped the bed with TL3 and then Magic:Legends. Bunch of buffoons there I guess.

They also just announced acquiring Dark Horse Media!!!

“Embracer Group — the parent company of Gearbox Entertainment, THQ Nordic, and others — announced today that they’ve acquired Dark Horse Media along with a number of other subsidiaries. Embracer now has over a dozen groups under its umbrella.

Dark Horse is known first and foremost for its comics division, which has both published famous non-superhero western comics like Hellboy and Sin City along with licensed work for franchises like Star Wars. The company has been the go-to publisher for various Nintendo materials in the West, largely in the form of art books for The Legend of Zelda, Splatoon, Fire Emblem, Mario, and more.”

What?  A world where PWE has more in common with the Swedish Chef than with the Devil?  What wonderful earth we live on!  I guess we owe Embracer Group for this warm embrace.

I'm not sure what Embracer was thinking... neither PWE or Cryptic has released anything good in years.

It's probably about doing more for the games they have with improvements/adjustments etc similar to EG7/Daybreak.

A lot of improvements could be made for their games without PWE monetization being the main motivator for everything they did. Magic Legends could've possibly been a much better game without that $ influence/impacting the gameplay so much.

Not sure what other games PWE had, but the 3 mmo's make a steady profit. Buy enough of what others consider dogs, that make steady money year in and out,...they can both add to a companies profits and make doing other things possible.

All depends on how much the price was if it was worth it.

Getting access to the Star Trek IP itself is worth it since they have an exclusive license atm with CBSinteractive.

Well when you think about it what major studio has, at least in in the MMO space?

Zenimax, Blizzard, NCSoft?  All pretty much just resting on their laurels.

My question is, will they let me recover my old characters from Champions Online without having to pay hundreds of dollars up front?

I just hope this Embracer Group turns around the subjective decline of Star Trek Online's downward spiral into the heavy monetization & gambling. I'm sure it'll still be present, but hopefully not the game's focus & perhaps an increase in Cryptic's resources & growth of actual content in STO.

Haven't touched a perfect world game in years last game I played was neverwinter hit max level in 2 character classes got bored and left also alot of old content they kept in the games still fucking crippled like idrises throne the quest at a certain level appears but it impossible to complete because the old content is broken and has been left in that state along with a bunch of stuff, them selling to anyone was never surprising to me with their work ethics with letting old content break and not maintaining it is what gets people frustrated and knowing the antics won't change most get bored and leave, imagine if wow let dungeons or old quests break the dam lash back

Perfect worlds business practices have always been cute paint it up and doll it up and get people to buy a few things at the start of joining a game then have them leave a month or 2 later

Played Perfect World years and years back as supposedly it was a good F2P game. All it did was confirm my concerns about F2P and how it could effect gameplay. But the exotic graphics (only having played Eastern solo not eastern MMO) setting was quite good for that time, which shows gameplay is more important than graphics.

Calling Champions Online successful is pretty funny to me.

The STO F2P gamblebox and extreme monetization police (Mudd) paradigms need to end and a focus on real content and player cultivation as well as bug fixes ought be the order of the day as so much opportunity wasted with the current Macau Online system.

Last time I tried to recover my account, I couldn't even contact them to make the request.  Hope it's gotten better.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

For me, the issue probably isn't one of account recovery.  Rather, the issue is whether I can play my old characters or will have to start over.  Buying 28 freeform slots is expensive these days.  And I already bought the character slots for a lot of characters, but can't use them anymore unless I switch to the stupid archetypes.
