And So It All Comes To An End

Saw this on my Facebook Feed:    https://forums.burningsea.com/index.php?p=/discussion/103870/portalus-games-closure

Unless they can find another buyer to keep it going PotBS will shut down Sept 30th, 2018.

While I haven't honestly played since it's heyday, I do come back from time to time and set sail.   Just today I defeated a British Privateer group preying on Portobello doing my part to stave off an upcoming Port Battle.

Hope for a miracle, cuz it's been a heck of a ride and it would be a shame for it to end.

I thought this game was dead long time ago.
Anyway It's always sad (for the players) when a game shut.
    RIP.

Another PvP game dead or dying. No surprise there may be if you allowed PvE players to play with optional PvP it might have survived.

Maybe if the user community can do as suggested and start a non-profit then they can take-over.  There are lots of games out there (SWGEMU, Ryzom, etc) that have continued to live on by the fans.  Hopefully the licensing can be modified such that the community really can help with development and stability.  There could be hope yet if enough players want to keep the game going!

you could avoid pvp in POTBS pretty easily .. so optional yes ..

You could indeed not only "avoid" pvp in PotBS entirely - by just staying out of the pvp areas - whilst your pve "efforts" could actually help the war effort.

Sadly it never gained the traction the distinctive 3+1 faction design along with some "clever" mechanics deserved. The rocky start - loading screens every time you entered the door - probably didn't help.

Its not over yet but obviously this is not a good sign.

Actually if you read the discussion thread in the BurningSea.com forums it's quite encouraging!

As Nebless mentioned above you have to be signed in to see it.  I actually had to create a new account on the forums but you get immediate access.

One of the few games I didn't mind Pvping in, but it wasn't hard to avoid Pvp as others have said and the way it was set up Pvp was totally optional.  If you wanted to, you went into the Red Zone, if not, you went else where.  Very rarely did Red Zones screw up someone's PvE quests since you had so many to choose from going to some other port was always easy.

I also found (in it's hey day) that it was a more gentlemanly form of Pvp.  Most guilds (fleets) had a rule not to sink the newbies, just chase them off or destroy their sails to let them know not to enter.

You either 1. never played PotBS or 2. didnt know how to sail your ship around the red pvp zones. I dont think I pvped once when I played it as there was so much pve stuff to do.

The game could have benefited from having a pvp server where you could attack enemy factions anywhere instead of just the certain areas.

Yup when it first started there were almost enough players to make it good but it burned out fast. There is a more modern game that is almost identical. I own it but havent logged in in over a year so not sure how much its changed. Its called Naval Action. So for guys who have a deep sense of loss you cna try that one out, it was pretty expensive (45 bucks I think) for what it was but I am sure there are bargain basement sales going on with it by now since its been EA for a couple years now. There also adding a lot of DLC ships and stuff to a game not released so thats another black mark right there. So ....but its a more modern version of PoTBS. So much so I thought the guys who made the original were making that one.

I've heard in a couple of different places and quite recently that NA is having problems and lost a number of the starting players.  Could be because it's still in EA and players are just waiting for the actual launch or maybe somethings not going right.

I followed it for a bit when the ad's first started appearing, but the price and EA put me off, plus I still had PotBS for my sailing fix.

They just announced that the game will continue through at least the end of October.  We're hoping that will allow enough time for the interested parties to finalize the deal with the 3 folks who still own the IP.

So still time for those who haven't tried it.

Tired it a couple times shortly after launch, but just couldn't get into it.  Not a bad game though.  I didn't know it was still going.  Thought it had died long ago.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

I heard it was PVP early so I never even looked at it.

As stated elsewhere it's optional Pvp, so do it if you want, ignore it your choice.

In an odd turn of events, the game has received new server hardware which is a certain signal of something positive intended for the future of the game.

Other than that tidbit of positive news, there has been no updates for the player base to decide on investing time or money into the game.

The upgraded server hardware says one thing.   The lack of news/updates says another.
